    Thanks for sharing your experiences, man, in such detail. It's really a lot more helpful than listening to all the doctors and therapists talk about 'what to expect'. You are the REAL DEAL and your experiences are something that all us 'recoverers' can relate to. Thanks again! (Great backdrop... Enjoy!)

    Oh, i Iove that flexion! Had my #1 tkr right knee on May 11 2021 so I am about 8 wks or or po and I'm doing great with that. I will have #2 left tkr in about another month (end of Aug, first part of Sept) so I'm really looking forward to having that done. Going through the VA (Veterans Admin) and my female doc was awsome! Just hoping I have another great outcome but I know it can be a crapshoot! Staying positive, and keeping very active. No pain meds here either. Not retired (lucky you) and my job prevents me from enjoying the other recreational forms of pain management. Don't really hurt anyway so alls good! Thanks for all the videos, advice and 'Outdoor ' scenes! Love it!

      Now it's been about three months since your TKR. How is it going? I'm supposed to have my left knee done in just four days but my doctor found I have an infection. On antibiotics, just hope this doesn't delay the surgery as I'm ready! Watched zillions of youtube videos and read lots so know what to expect. Was yours done by robotic? Hope you're doing well.

At 57 and my 2nd TKR, it's like being part of a club and I have to say I had a very similar experience as you. The second knee was more painful and seems to be taking a little longer to heal. My first replacement was 2.5 years ago. I could do most day to day stuff on the 2nd knee but was having lots of pain coming down mountains and it started ballooning up on me after heavy use and was getting progressively worse. It was time.

    I'm four months out and I'm not where you are at 5 weeks. But my progress has been steady, so I can't complain (too much). I'm at 120 flexion and 2 degrees extension, finally. Hope to get more, but I understand at 4 months the odds are somewhat against me. Still I'll keep pushing with the stretches to see if there's a tad more in me. Just started biking a few miles in the last few weeks. And walking like half that distance. Hope to hike Half Dome this summer and ski next winter! Your videos have been an inspiration! Thanks for all of them!

    • @Lila77722
      @Lila77722 3 года назад +2

      How long did it take for you to get to 2 degree extension? I am at 15 degree and i am almost 6 weeks post op. Extension is hard😣

    • @Tom-dt4ic
      @Tom-dt4ic 3 года назад +3

      @@Lila77722 Took me about four weeks to get to 5 degrees extension and another two weeks to get to two degrees. That's 2 degrees passive extension which means that's what I can do on my own. My active inflection, then and now, is zero degrees, meaning when my PT pushes down on the knee. I agree, extension is hard, but it's even more important than flexion so it's worth working at. My PT ended every session with pillows under my ankle and heavy ice packs on my knee to force it down even straighter. I had to endure that position for ten minutes and it was a bear. He also had me lie on my stomach with my leg hanging out over the end of the table with weights wrapped around the ankle. That hurt even more, but I guess it eventually worked.

    • @Tom-dt4ic
      @Tom-dt4ic 3 года назад +3

      @@Lila77722 I know how you feel because I was behind in flexion and definitely concerned. Hope you meet your goals soon! The key is to stretch for at least ten minutes light to moderate, three times a day every day.

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  3 года назад +1

      You are doing great. It took me 4 months to get to 120 on my first knee and it’s serving me well. I’m just fortunate that the 2nd knee is even more flexible and will now be my stepping over big logs and rocks on the trail knee. Half dome is fun but I suggest making it a backpacking trip if you can. Doing it all in one day is a tough slog. If you can get a permit to overnight in little yosemite valley or camp past the turn off to hd and sunrise creek area you can get up early and beat the crowds on the cables. When it was legal me and some buddies spent the night on top of hd with just one other group. Times have changed and now it’s a zoo up there but such a fun hike. You should be good to go by summer! Good luck!

    I watched your videos from your first knee surgery journey a couple of weeks before my surgery. I am a runner/walker/hiker and I was concerned about being able to pursue my walking and eventually running one day. Your videos convinced me I will be back again. My left knee was replaced on November 10, and as I reply tonight I've been regularly walking 2 miles a day, and did 4 mile walk last Saturday. I'm doing a 5 mile walk on Jan. 2 and I've signed up to walk a half marathon the end of March. My PT and doctor says I'm way ahead of normal for a 60 year old. I set goals and I keep on pushing and it's working and setting goals. I hope the pain gets better for you and I know you'll recover. Looking forward to watching your progress for this knee replacement as well.

    • @ApeMan
      @ApeMan  3 года назад

      Hey a positive can do attitude like yours really helps with the recovery. Glad to hear you are doing so well. I did a long mountain bike trail yesterday and am the good kind of sore today. I’d like to suggest to keep your running on soft surfaces. I’m convinced the street running I did a lot of in my 30’s contributed to my knee problems. I’m an old stubborn athlete and I begrudgingly gave up things like softball and basketball leagues for more backpacking and hiking. Just my thoughts and experience. Hike your own hike and enjoy the new knee!
