Because Rap/Pop is more outlandish where as R&B is more about charm/charisma....

Cool story about sister shirley. Me her and my wife used to go to church together. We didn't have much but that didn't matter to her. She actually blessed my wife with a couple of outfits from her own closet but besides that God used her to speak into my life in ways unimaginable, I was set free from a lot of things under her singing, God bless sister shirley.

Im kinda young, but I think hip hop soul was starting to form during that time, and if you didn’t have a HIT song as an r&b artist then you took a hit, but she should’ve had a fan base after as we lay, maybe her album wasn’t good. So I see both points!
It’s not an excuse it’s what it was. Once the 90s came (which was a new decade at the time) Music started to change and it was hard for certain artist to jump on the new wave so when your music is failing to chart it doesn’t get around as it should which leads you to a downfall.
