Personally, I’m fine with no de-aging in the episode. Just seeing Ewan and Hayden on screen together again was great.
After watching episode 5, I came up with an idea for AOTC fan edit with this whole training sequence inserted right before the elevator scene as an introduction of Anakin and Obi-Wan. But I scrapped that idea since both Ewan and Hayden obviously look different from what they did 20 years ago. Then yesterday I saw people on RUclips creating some cool de-aging effect and I just wanted to try it myself. I feel like some shots of Anakin have already been edited but I tried to make him look younger to match with AOTC. I’ve never done de-aging before so it may not look great. But it’s always good to learn new skills as a fan editor.
I mainly used FaceApp and EbSynth to create a de-aged face and used Davinci and Affinity Photo for minor adjustments. This is the first time I used EbSynth to create a de-aging effect. And I’m quite satisfied with result. I think some shots turned out better than others. Having said that, most of them are still uncanny to me and there is certainly room for improvement.

There were people who had pretty convincing edits out within hours of the episode airing.
They really had no excuse for not deaging him when they had Disney money. 😂
Exactly if you have to hire some big digital effects RUclipsr like they did for Luke but even for like.. a day or a week before the show airs. They could go into the finished product of what we got and fix it up quick before you air it. It’s not like they’re sending it to movie theatres. It’s just one copy going on their streaming service. You can literally have someone fix it hours before and send the finished copy to whoever publishes the episode on Disney +.
You didn’t even need to have it done by the time the series premiered!😂 it’s a weekly release so they had time AFTER the show first aired to do a little de-aging. I’m all for practical effects and less cgi when you can. But in the case of Disney de-aging I’ve seen worse and makeup just wasn’t enough to distract me from the fact that Hayden in his 40s looks nothing like he did in his 20s😄.
Same as Orlando Bloom as Legolas looked much older in The Hobbit than he did in LoTR despite it being a prequel.
Probably only one I can think of is they didn't want to de-age him too much given that's the only scenes where you're going to see him without any makeup that changes his appearance. (to look like vader).
Imagine what the inquisitors would be like if the fans had made them.

The mouth is too big here at times, he looks almost like The Joker in some scenes. I saw another version much better but this was still pretty good. Again though, the mouth. I almost laughed at a couple of the scenes. The edges of the mouth go out in almost cartoonish fashion.
Tell Crimson Maul to include this in his V2 edit of Obi-Wan Kenobi with this de-age edit.

I just can’t understand the laziness of the studio. You’ve got brilliant folks like yourself doing this out of your home in relatively little time… and a huge studio with tons of money and time and resources just doesn’t do it.

Could be the actor didn't want it or they just didn't want to de age him because he was full of make up in other scenes.
I think it could have been that de-aging can sometimes take away from the facial expressions. If you compare the shots in the video, it is registering the expressions as wrinkles and removes/decreases them. It isn't a drastic change, but I can see why they would make that decision.
It could also be for thematic reasons, we may never know.
@@demonkingnetsu4045 And non the less it totally threw me out of the immersion during watching. Man he is old playing a young scene with always in my brain... I could understand, that he wantet real screentime. But it makes the scenes strange in regard to plot and continuity.
In my opnion it is always a bad decision when it contradicts plot and logic. I see your point. But I already now wait until someone fixes the series and makes a probably much better 2h fan edit with these scenes... it all felt much to long. I think one could cut a much better movie from this series... wasn't it first planned as a movie?
@@hellerart Yeah, it was originally planned as a movie, same with the Book of Boba. I believe the decision to make them into a series was because of the perception of Last Jedi, Solo, and Rise of Skywalker.

By the force! This is the best version I've seen by far! I'm definitely with you when it comes to de-aging in this episode. People not seeing the need to de-age Anakin and Obi-Wan in the flashback just shows how easily Ewan and Hayden embodied the prequel versions of the characters again and how the director was able to capture the prequel feel. I love this scene so much. Not only does it serve well as part of the Kenobi story, it also just adds so much to the Skywalker Saga as a whole.
I will be doing an edit of sorts in the future using the scene from the episode. It's a long way away but do you mind if I use your version of the de-aging here? I'll give credit where it's due of course.
Was just great seeing them be their younger selves again. Back to a time period that is severely over-looked and under-hyped and the nostalgia behind it.
Alright, the de-ageing wasn't great and was mostly done with make-up, that didn't generate the best end-result.. But I *WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE* a TV series based/set in that time period..

Best before/after breakdown I've ever seen. I normally find myself having to pause and going back and forth a lot to get a good look. Not with this one. And major kudos for showcasing the power of just doing a hard cut from before to after. Wipes across the screen just confuses the eye, wish more people did it like this.

It was just nice to see these two legends back on screen together again I miss hayden and ewan so much they made my childhood and I really didn't have much of one so I adore them both so much and hope to see them together again at one point for me they was literally all I had

In a way I am glad to see the older Actor. He has been off the franchise for so long we couldn’t see him age really and with the Vader outfit we will not see the Real Hayden.. so seeing him in those scenes even if the age doesn’t fit warms my heart.

This one done by you, and the one done by Babbbs are the most natural-looking I've seen so far. Some others I've seen might be good, but their low bitrate makes it very hard to tell.

You know what's funny. He doesn't even need it. Literally every de aging the only thing that's happening is the removal of the lines from his nose to his mouth. That's it... dude hasn't changed at all.

This is really great work! One thing I notice is that the original footage seems to have a pretty intense film grain effect on it which is why the de-aging stands out in a couple shot.

It's pretty insane to see the work people have done to de-age him in such a short period of time. End of the day though, I didn't care too much about it. I understand it'd more more sense with continuation and what not, but I was just so happy to see Hayden and Ewan back like it was the old days. Great job though man, they should definitely think about looking into this for future possibilities

It’s weird. Supposedly they did in fact de-age both of them in this scene, when looking at the BTS. The weirder part of it is that in the final product, it looks like they did nothing.

Dude, you saved me. I've waited so long for a flashback just to have this there. How much disaster. It's obligatory for a fan to have to do this kind of work in their own home because Disney didn't want to bother doing it. It was really bad will on their part, because they have the money to do it. I wonder if they intend to fix this in the future. But if they don't, we have your job. And had the good will to still share with us. I've done my part myself and downloaded episode 5 and edited the flashback with this video of yours and put it on telegram. Thank you very much, I can sleep peacefully now.

Good! Several things to improve: bring back the grain, warp some region to lift up the face in some moments (especially noticeable on turns), refine the neck (this is not a young enough neck).

It makes a huge difference I can only imagine it was done to be kind to Hayden like: “you haven’t aged a today so we don’t need to de-age you”
remember Ewan McGregor was a producer on this show and has had a big influence on the systems like this and he seems to be good friends with Hayden (but I don’t know after him it might not have been his decision) just seems like a decision a friend would make
