YES! Wearing a coat over the costume ruined the vibe. We’re in the Chicago area, now as a mother myself…I get my kids costume a size too big so they can wear there jackets/sweaters under the costume. SO MUCH better looking. They just look a little plump 🤣❤️
as a whitie from oklahoma, cake walks were indeed the most exciting thing ever. we would have other prizes though, like two liters of soda or boxes of little debbie snack cakes, big bags of chips, etc. (who doesn’t want free junk food?)

I grew up in a strict religious home too so we didn’t celebrate Halloween but one year I was like “screw this I’m going trick or treating once before I’m too old” So I make shifted my own hippie costume and snuck out and trick or treated my neighborhood alone and snuck back in with my loot and shared it with my sisters so none of them could snitch.
Why do I feel like y’all are gonna be Danny devito and Arnold in linen suits from twins? My wife and I were gonna attempt it 😂

the cake walk just unlocked a deeeep memory. i would spend the whole Halloween carnival doing that with the 60+ folks and tossing pennies at dishes from the goodwill and if you made it you would get to take the dish home :)
I usually listen on Spotify but I had to come to RUclips to comment bc Deison brought back my cake walk trauma. I was like 6 or 7 and I understood the cake walk rules the way you do which is that you win the ENTIRE cake. I win, I go look at the cakes, grab one, and immediately get stopped by the old lady running it and she tells me that they’re doing it where you only get to take a piece. I was so embarrassed by misunderstanding the rules that I sobbed and left the whole thing behind. Needless to say it was my first and ONLY cake walk.

For two Halloweens I was Brittney Spears from Baby One More Time. Wig and outfit! I went all out and zero guys knew who I was and kept asking if I was dressed as a catholic school girl. My reply was always "I'm Brittney bitch..." and another year I made my own Princess Daisy costume, got the patterns and learned how to sew and 3D print the jewelry and crowns! Very proud of both outfits!

As someone that had a traumatic childhood, I love to hear childhood stories from the ACU because they perfectly capture the innocence and pure joy that is being a kid. There are many memories I hold fondly despite what I went through because being a kid helps you make light of even the darkest situations. Every year in my little hick town hometown in New Mexico, they do a Halloween carnival at one of the churches, and they always have a cake walk. There is a numbered circle (kinda like hop scotch) and they play music and people walk around. When the music stops, they draw a number from a bucket, and the person on that number gets to pick a baked good. They have homemade cupcakes, cookies, brownies, rice crispies, etc. They don't have tickets, and you can keep going until you win. I actually really enjoy it too. 🤭
I never knew what a cakewalk was, until I was a vendor for a volunteer firefighter event, and donated cakes. It's lit!

My elementary school also had a cake walk! The one year that I did win, I got a clown cake (cause our school year book theme was the “Big Top”) and I brought it to my mom, very excited, and she freaked out. That’s how I learned she is very afraid of clowns.

Another story. I was in a cake walk when I was prolly 8 years old. My mom was a super health freak and we never had deserts/junk food in the house. I was looking through the cakes before I did the walk, and I saw this BEAUTIFUL chocolate cake shaped like a turtle. I did the cake walk and I WON. I grabbed the turtle chocolate cake and was smiling the whole way home. We got to the house and my mom agreed I could have a piece. She cuts a slice and i take a giant bite and it’s fucking PUMPERNICKEL BREAD. I want to know what parent donated BREAD, and PUMPERNICKEL at that. I despise that bread to this day.

Omg, my Catholic Church had a cake walk at the Christmas party every year except it was walking on Saints and they’d call a saint and if you were on it, then you got a cookie or chocolate. No cake but the same concept…
The church octoberfest in my town when I was younger had a cakewalk and it’s all I ever wanted to do. One time I made so much only my family join me and there were like 2 other people not in my family playing and so we went home with like 10 cakes. Hahahahaha
Talking about cake walks (which I totally did), they used to do a similar type of thing at grocery stores when I was a child. Throughout the store in random spots they would place markers on the floor (with numbers or symbols) and they would randomly announce over the loud speaker for kids to stand on one if they were near one/could find one and to stay on it until they picked a number/symbol that was the winner and bring you out a "prize" to the kid on that spot. It was a thrill to walk in a store and notice stuff taped to the ground and know what might happen while you were there.

At my elementary school, we always had a winter carnival around late January - early February. It was always a blast, and they had a cake walk there as well. My mom would always make a cake, and she'd try to correlate it to the theme. Like in 2014 she did olympics for the winter olympics. Cake walk was always so fun, and while my school was a little bit diverse, I will agree it definitely felt like white people culture.
