Interesting. I am brazilian, and never heard of this. I suppose it is more common around the Belo Horizonte area, and I live in a different city. But I'll sure try it out, it sounds delicious. Myself, I like to use guaraná soda in a Gin and Tonic riff, only subbing the tonic for guaraná. The botanicals in the gin pair really well with the guaraná, I think. Cheers!
It's not often that I'd be drinking before my mid-afternoon caffeine cutoff--but the day of the super bowl is a perfect day to try this! Gonna see if I can find some mate and guarana at my local specialty market while I'm picking up mustard for bratwurst. Thanks for the always polished, thoughtful, and concise videos, Derek!
Finally got around to trying this after realizing my grocery store carries Bawls Guarana. Weird it was the unsweetened yerba that was hard to find. As written it’s a bit dry for me bit the guarana soda is pretty good so i just doubled it to 4oz still not particularly sweet and refreshing af!
Just in time for Carnaval. If you iive in a big town, chances are you have a Brazilian market nearby where you can find Guarana. I need to try guarana syrup.
Never seen Bawls, but Guarana Antarctica is often available at my Latin American grocery store. I also have plenty of loose leaf mate, so I guess I can keep this drink in mind.
Thanks for bring us cocktail sensations from across the globe. I noticed you used lime juice instead of lemon juice. The Punch article calls out lemon juice. Can you share why you went with lime?
The canned version is made with limão which is lime. The translation to English is not exact when you’re looking at a lot of recipes from South America or Mexico. You’ll often see limão or limon translated to lemon when it’s really lime. (Hopefully that’s right) Guessing you could take a lot of liberties with the recipe since it’s been adapted so much.
If I remember Red Bull actually uses guarana, so the comment in the middle that it smells like Red Bull isn't too far off base. Being a spirit, with lime, and soda this feels like a tea infused Mule. Fun note that in Spanish checkmate is pronounced similar to he-ke-ma-te. It really rolls off the tongue.
White Rum in a brazilian drink? Rare... I'm brazilian, never heard of this, but I'll give it a try (original recipe and another one with white cachaça instead)
It wasn't invented in 2015, its a stable drink where I live since the 90's, here we leave the guaraná out because despite being a brazilian fruit, mate and guaraná are not from the same place. Mate tea with lime juice is one of the most drinked beverages in souther Brasil, I'm having it right now in fact, and the idea to mix with rum came along when cuba libre was hyped back in the 90's. I'm from Paraná, where more than half the brazilian mate comes from, and in this case it differs from the yerba that make chimarrão because the leaves are not green, you need to make a tea first with the toasted leaves, which have a woodsy flavour over the herbal taste. I never seen someone using guaraná the brand soda, but they use the extrac of the fruit and in my opinion is a little cloying, probably the soda tastes better. Don't add coffee tho. People used to have it in a tall glass just like cuba libre, with ice and a straw.. I was a bit too young to drink at the time, but I remember how hyped this drink was on the festivities of the turning of the millenium. I tryied this canned version you showed, its not easy to find it here, and its a bit cloying because of the guarana, if you have a few more than you should its the guarana taste that will make you regret over drinking on the next morning, but its a great drink to have in the summer
Glad to help, Derek! I already shared the video with some friends! Hope you can make more videos showcasing Brazilian cocktails in the future!
Cheers!
World Market often stocks the Guarana soda you showed.

depending on where you are, latin grocery stores usually carry guarana antarctica in both cans and bottles!
Well, I really hope it gets more popular because it sounds delicious!

I'm Brazilian and this seems perfectly accurate!

Never expected to see a cocktail made using Guarana!
Some smaller South / Central American mom & pop grocers may carry Guarana Antartica
3:21😄👍
Heh. Bawls.

Brazilian cocktails rarely use lemon (it is much more expensive than lime). It is also the juice used in the original recipe.

@@makeanddrink Brazilian PT uses the same word for lemons and limes, so it's easy to mix up.
Confirmed: Derek likes BAWLS

I did not expect BAWLS, the soda of my college LAN party years to appear on this channel
