Back in the late seventies, I worked in an engineering department for a major company. Our mechanical engineer started playing with the basic mechanics shown here but powered it with air. It had a wire feed mechanism that let you stack cans I designed and built the electronics to control it and work the air valves, all from scrap parts in the lab. He fired it up and it smashed them like a machine gun, you only had to keep the feed full.

If you do this in Sweden you get zero money, we have recycle machines in every supermarket we're you get money for every pet bottle and cans you feed in to the machine, they have to be in the same condition as when you bought it, there is a bar code on every can and bottle that the machine scan.

Where I'm from in texas, they pay 50 cents a pound, a pound is made up of about 32 to 35, 12 once cans, so basically each can is worth one penny and half .015. So most people don't even bother recycling them, they just throw it away to the garbage

When recycling began here in NC it was a family thing. My parents & I would walk along the roads & anywhere else to pick up cans. Racing events, sporting events & also local bars. The cans found in the ditches sometimes were filled with mud, dirt or any kind of sediment that found its way into the can. We didn't take the time to wash these cans, we were just doing a service to recycle & get paid for it. I bought my first car with can money & rebuilt the engine.
And yes, some people do try to add weight to them by adding sand, dirt or small rocks prior to crushing.

this just seam strange to me. in Sweden we have can recycling. if you bring your can to a supermarket there is a machine there that accepts cans and you get 1 Swedish krona for each can. that is about 0.1 American Dollars. The money comes from the extra fee that every can cost at the supermarket.
this applies to plastic bottles here as well, the same machine accepts and sorts and crush them by reading the barcodes.

I love all these “DIY” when it comes to stuff like this. You know that DIY means everyone or anyone could do this… show of hands, who has and knows how to use an arc welder, a metal torch cutter…??? I sure don’t. This in my opinion is the definition of NOT DIY… this is “take it to a metal worker” type project.
It’s like saying “hey I can write a program in C# to sort your shoes by color and brand.” Now I can do that, but it doesn’t mean everyone can… but they could if they had the knowledge and tools… that doesn’t make it DIY!

    • @hudsonkilpatrick1766
      @hudsonkilpatrick1766 Год назад

I have to agree & disagree with what you are saying here. Agree that not EVERYONE "has or knows how to use an arc welder or a metal torch cutter" as you call it. But if you are the type of person that considers themselves a DIY kind of person, then you are more than likely to have the knowledge & tools to perform this particular project.
But like you said in your example "but they could if they had the knowledge and tools" and YES THAT IS what makes it DIY!
I only commented because I do enjoy doing as much as I can with the tools & knowledge I have, although limited at times. I am self taught in MIG welding cause stick was just too much for me, too many variables & did the same with an oxy acetylene torch! Some tools & or space to house them are just out of my financial reach for the amount of use I'd get from them, it makes better sense to sub out some of the work. For example, I've held positions where I operated very expensive machines such as cnc routers, mills, lathes & a lot more. What I didn't know I learned, then took that knowledge did the design work, then went to a shop that had those machines. Took my drawings at first because I didn't have the software to do the work with, but eventually built up to it. Still do lot of work such as this but let those that DO HAVE the tools & the knowledge do THAT PART of the work. Cheaper for me for sure, cause I never buy or invest in any tool that doesn't pay for itself within a year of owning it. Although I now have the knowledge for the most part I choose NOT TO HAVE ALL the tools, but allow someone else to do that part for me, it just makes good financial sense to me. Also I'm getting a little tired of al the physical work due to my age.
And if you don't have the knowledge or the tools to do this particular project there are other means to build this device made of wood if you are more of a wood worker than a metal worker. Cause all this except for the welding can be done with grinders, files & hack saws. Though I wouldn't want to do it like that for sure. But you got to crawl before you can walk so to speak.
For THIS project, what gets me is that EVERY video on how to build a can crusher thinks or ALWAYS shows the cans in BRAND NEW PRISTINE condition! When recycling began my pop and I picked up cans EVERYWHERE, ditches, racing events, local bars & at home. These cans were NEVER PRISTINE or in GOOD condition. They were always bent, half crushed you name it, but never in a condition that would allow the to be fed into devices like this. Although this is one of the best I've seen to get the can to it's minimum crushed size. I would like to see one for ALL type conditions a can could possibly be in.
Well there's my nickel's worth. Thanks for your comment. I rarely comment on anything but your comment I could relate to. Best of wishes in your future endeavors

Good design, BUT. I worked at BUD. We took turns running the recycling center on Saturdays. We have a machine that will crush the cans and shoot them into a trailer. "Hockey pucks", what we call them, jam the machine. Idk why exactly, but what a pain in the A**, when you got a line full of cars and trucks waiting. If your gonna crush them, do it long ways. 👎 Hockey pucks

Looks complicated. Here we take them to a supermarket and put them in a machine and get money in return.

Yes, if the barcode is read correctly. So smashing the can is no good.

We had these in our high-school in uk back in 1995. We had some fun exploding full cans all over the wall

The bottle return places where I live won't accept already crushed cans.
