      To be honest, I will probably spend a few years working and exploring BC and buy a house to start a business in Alberta . The quality of life is better on this end with higher wages , cheaper groceries ( WAY CHEAPER RENT ) and less taxes....cant go wrong. In canmore it would cost me for example $800/month to rent a BEDROOM anand groceries cost roughly $600/month as a single person ... but in Calgary , my rent for a 1 bedroom apartment would be $850 and groceries ( way cheaper in city ) down to $400/month ..... BC is beautiful but it's a shame the wages arent higher and sk much tax ... not worth it long term, but depends on your education + career.

Otherwise, Banff is WAY too exspensive with a private room normally being $900-$1200/month. Recently I have seen a few for $650-$800 though because of the pandemic . Bhavesh Thakkar having a hard time choosing between Vancouver and Toronto, how would you describe your experience in both cities?

    • @Bhavesht1
      @Bhavesht1 4 года назад +42

      @@aldocamarena995 Hi Aldo, I will list down few high level comparisons between both cities that may help in your decision.
      Toronto is more sunny compared to Vancouver in winters but Vancouver winters are way milder. If you can't stand freezing temperatures Vancouver is the place for you but it rains here almost all the time during winters and is gloomy mostly. I feel transit is better in Vancouver. Because of sky train you tend to spend less time on traveling, also because of the fact Vancouver is smaller than Toronto. Transit in Vancouver is slightly cheaper. Both Vancouver and Toronto are close to US so well connected to USA. Toronto would win in terms of connectivity to the rest of the world (not by a big margin though). You cannot compare the scenic beauty and landscape between these two cities as Vancouver is way more beautiful because of it's landscape. It has both mountains and ocean. Both cities are crowded but Toronto will rank higher on the chart. Toronto has more diversity. Vancouver is diverse too but mostly asian population. Toronto is the hub for big events/concerts and might rank higher again. On the other hand Vancouver is called the Hollywood of North. You'll be surprised to know how many Hollywood movies are shot here. In the end both of them are good cities to live in. It depends on the nature of your work and personal preference. I love Vancouver personally because I have lived here longer than Toronto and hence can call it home. Also, west coast is beautiful and I like explore the nature which Vancouver facilitates.

    As for winter, Montreal has the largest complex of an underground city in the world, where you don't have to step outside if you don't want to. Apartment buildings can take you to the underground city where you can walk to work in 24C degree temperature year round. And at night the lights dim. Montreal does have beaches as the water treatment built in 1984 has been returning to the river, cleaner water. And the St Lawrence provides white water rafting and perpetual surfing, as long as you can stand up. Lastly, Montreal's night life and food experience has no equal in Canada. Nightlife is like Las Vegas or NYC, only safer. Just my observation as I have been to all 4 cities, but don't live in any of them.

      Agreed. The wet cloudy drizzly winters in Vancouver weren’t for me...although it will get colder in Calgary, the sun makes a huge difference. A single chart can’t explain weather in any of these cities, but along with those cold snaps, we also get nice mild “chinooks” in Alberta. The greenery in Vancouver winters though is nice, and I find their summers to be really nice (warm but not hot until you head further east, and lots of sunshine). Calgary summers - just like Winter is a mixed bag, so you have to take the good with the bad.

I don’t think most French Canadians would expect a greater effort from immigrants either. I think what most French Canadians expect is a little respect. In a country with two official languages, they expect their leaders to be bilingual (prime minister, governor general, supreme court judges …). In a province where 94,5% of citizens can hold a conversation in French, they expect meetings in their workplace to be held in French. Ex-calgarian immigrant from Russia here. To answer your question directly, I'd say that in terms of any work-related bias you'll face, least to most it goes: Toronto, Calgary/Vancouver, Montreal but any of those cities really doesn't have much racism or general nepotism since they are all still multi-cultural Canadian cities. Toronto is a true melting pot with massive amounts of immigrants from all parts of the world that create powerful social enclaves in their own right. You're likely to find a huge community of people that come from the same cultural, social and ethnic background as you. The downside is, it's the closest Canada has to world class, alpha city and the job market is insanely competitive. With the insane rent, expect to face some financial hardships before you establish a good career but you likely won't face any bias whatsoever. Vancouver is very similar but is slightly less multicultural and you may experience a few closed doors due to nepotism, but again the chances of outright discrimination are very slim. Calgary, while quite conservative and less racially diverse in appearance is surprisingly tolerant. The city is currently in a bust state of its boom and bust, oil dependent economy, so come there with a job lined up, but the city has a huge upside. It's a very young(both in the age of the city and age of the average resident), actively growing city. Housing is amazingly cheap, cost of living is low and the people are very kind. You're likely to find a community of people of your own background if that's something you seek, but even if you dont, you'll make your own community with the locals just fine. Out of the 4 cities, it's the one that's the most car oriented despite the city having a quite good, actively expanding public transit system so expect to get a car at some point in the near future if you chose to move there because there's only a few communities in which you can live and get by without one. It's also quite isolated from any other major city including Edmonton, so if you like traveling to other cities as a tourist, it's not easy without getting on an airplane. However, the nature is amazing. Hiking in the rocky mountains that are only an hour away by car is, to many people a once in a lifetime experience, but you get the opportunity to make it a weekend pastime. To this day, I still miss being able to drive out there with friends and family and walking a trail through the awe-inspiring valleys and mountains. Montreal, you're likely to find the most discrimination, not because of race, culture or social class, but because it's a majority french speaking city and without french, many types of jobs are simply impossible to get into. However, the city itself is amazing. Price of housing and living is only slightly higher than Calgary, the city is on an upswing economically, its downtown looks like a beautiful European city and there's unlimited entertainment opportunities. Hope this helps a little.

    As a person who has lived in Vancouver, Montreal and now Toronto, Vancouver is my personal favourite due to the diversity of the landscapes.
    Theirs mountains in one direction, the ocean in another, woods in another direction and the U.S border with Seattle just beyond it. It also has Vancouver island which has a few great cities to visit in the summer like Victoria, Chemainus, Nanaimo, Tofino. It's probably the most expensive, that and the pop children of multimillionaires driving bmw's and benzes to their highschool keep it from being the easy number one pick.
    Montreal especially before 2020 was the most affordable. It still is but things have changed quickly. It's a tough city if you don't speak french but you can survive with the right connections, some jobs you can do with the internet and not require you learning french. The culture is dope here, and the women are full of surprises both good and bad. If you can speak french Montreal is a no brainer. It's also quite close to Ottawa which is becoming a large Canadian city.
    Toronto is expensive and dense but I also see the most opportunity. You can meet anyone you need to here in this city. The people are actually pretty nice when they're not in a rush.

    I want to make a few comments regarding Montreal.
    First, you don’t even show it on your map, and you don’t have the right skyline. Quebec City is the capital, and Montreal is the financial capital of the province (Quebec) and second largest city in Canada in terms of size/population (metro area close to 5 million) and second in terms of economic strength (It used to be #1, but separatist politics in the province hurt its prosperity beginning in the 1970s. This benefitted Toronto consequently-a smaller city at the time). However, Montreal has rebounded and has one of the hottest economies and commercial/real estate markets in North America (pre COVID).
    You cite stats about demographics, but you overlook the unique immigration patterns (QC has more control than other provinces) and visible minority population (over 40 percent). Similar to Greater Paris, Greater Montreal has huge populations of people from everywhere including those of Middle eastern, North African/African, Caribbean, European, Asian, Latin American, and south Asian descent. The city is extremely diverse and young.
    Until COVID, it’s economy was the strongest in the country, and the city continues to see new buildings ascend, companies establish their HQs, local startups thrive, infrastructure and civic projects completed such as the beautiful Samuel de Champlain Bridge and Turcot interchange, and the coming state of the art REM train system connecting all suburbs that are not linked to the metro now linked to the city and Trudeau international airport . This system will integrate with the already existing Metro, Train, and Bus systems which already connected city and suburbs. In other words, public transit system is arguably one of the best in
    North America. Montreal also has the most connections to different continents (only Pearson has the same).
    It’s a global city, multilingual, and innovative. Very strong in every field including AI, Aerospace, health, finance, education/knowledge, arts, culture, hospitality, pharmaceuticals, gaming, textiles, tech, etc. I’ve lived in Toronto and visited Calgary and Vancouver, but the lifestyle and culture is not even close to Montreal’s. The restaurants and food are INCREDIBLE and world renowned. The festivals (F1 Grand Prix, Just for laughs, Jazz fest, fire works competition, Osheaga, Ile Soniq) are of the best in the world. And the, history, architecture, local cultures,
    Parks, natural beauty, museums, universities,
    nightlife, music scene, arts, and so on, are unique and incredible.
    One misconception is you have to speak French. While being bilingual is the norm, you can easily make a career speaking English. But to be a Montrealer is to be multilingual. If you haven’t been, visit the city. No place like it in North America.

    • @SA-sf2cq

      @DS Definitely a friendly city, and if you make some effort, you can make friends/acquaintances quickly. Of course like any big city, you have unfriendly and rude people etc. Summers are humid and can get quite hot from late June-to late August; fall and spring is nice and longer than in western Canada. Winter is not as bad as the West, but it starts getting cold in late December/January, until early March. But you’ll have a lot of above zero days as well freezing rain, slush, and all that fun stuff.

    • @adamszanyi2242
      @adamszanyi2242 3 года назад +1

      @DS If you keep to the downtown area and land a job (which will be more difficult if you're unilingual but not impossible), you can basically avoid French all together. However, those people will usually have a negative experience of the city. You loose about 75% of what the city has to offer + some of the québécois will come off rude if you don't make the effort to speak the language. As long as you force yourself to address people in French (even if a francophone replies at first to you in English which will happen), you'll be immediately respected.
      I can't say what school is the best to learn French, because as with any language, it really depends on the motivation and discipline of the learner. If you're regularly exposed to the language + read a classic novel, you'll be good to go in no time (considering that you already know some of the basics).
      Three French language universities are available: UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal), Université Sherbrooke and Université de Montréal. All three offer a good education and have great professors and imposters (like everywhere), but the one with the highest ratings and well established international credentials is Université de Montréal.
      Anything that has to do with softwares will guarantee you a job. The AI industry especially is booming and MTL is posed to become a major Hub.
      Anything that has to do with healthcare as well (including Pharma).
      Construction (including architectural firms, engineers, BIM managers)
      You can also become an electrician and make more money than everyone else.

    I wish there was more content about "social life" in Calgary. I'm a 27 years old, single person, thinking about moving there alone but afraid it won't be a good place to make friends. Maybe the lack of content about it might be an indicator of how it is... lol

      For me personally, every time I've been to Calgary, the people have been really cool and I've had a lot of fun. Take that for what it's worth.

      Everyone in Calgary is from somewhere else. We have all been newcomers and are friendly and tolerant to outsiders. You will make friends, and quickly!

      Well as a Calgarian myself it’s dope. But it can be boring just saying there is nothing much to do here than the eastern cities.

      Girls are lot more friendlier and open-minded in Calgary than the ones in Toronto. I can bet you on this.

    I like how most people commenting are people that live in one of these cities lol. (Including me)
