Lyrics:
Hello, good evening
And welcome to nothing much
A no holds barred half nelson
And the loving touch
The comfort and the joy
Of feeling lost
With the only living boy
In New Cross
Fill another suitcase
With another hall
Of hotel towels and toothpaste
And the bathroom wall
Then wipe the lipstick hearts and flowers
From the glass and chrome
Take five or six hot showers
And come on home
To the comfort and the joy
Of feeling lost
With the only living boy
In New Cross
I've teamed up with the hippies now
I've got my fringe unfurled
I want to give peace, love and kisses out
To this whole stinking world
The gypsies, the travelers and the thieves
The good, the bad, the average and unique
The grebos, the crusties and the goths
And the only living boy in New Cross
Eyes down and I'll keep you up to date
Two fat ladies in 1988
The safe sixteen lovers who lied
Purley's queen and mother makes five
Butchered bakers, deaf and dumb waiters
Marble Arch criminals and clause 28'ers
Authers, authors, plastered outcasts
Locked up daughter, rock and roll stars
Goodbye Rudy, David and Rosie
Abraham and Julianne
And everyone that knows me
The gypsies, the travelers and the thieves
The good, the bad, the average and unique
The grebos, the crusties and you and I
Hello, good evening, welcome
#ChrysalisRecords
I’m 53 and was dancing to this in the kitchen yesterday with my 15 year old daughter, she said the tune was epic, “ damn right” I said. 🔥🔥
There is still hope for the youth after all 😂😂😂
The joyfulness of this song makes me cry with nostalgia. These years have never been topped.
Beautifully said, and you speak for me!
Epic song epic band, screw the shit world we still have this! Thanks guys!
Soo much all at the same time
Awesome time to exist ✨
Musically , socially , anti socially
Never felt as free to be
Now ~ people just searching for the next reason to be pissed off
So yeah fuk it - we have music ✨🎶🌸xx
@@jagomae. spot on!
Thank god 4 the memories and the music
50 years old and this still gets me bouncing around like like I was 18 again....just cant help it!!. An inspirational band!!
saw them a few times.. absolutely mental times.. 50 years as well mate
This is our youth my friend
Are you still a waist 32 though?
Calm down. 30 years.
Isn’t it embarrassing Granddads dancing again mum hahaha 64yo an I still got rhythm hahaha
The comfort and the joy of feeling lost❤❤❤
Grew up in Tulse Hill, end of the 70s start of the 80s. The voice, the riffs, and the rage, captured the feelings and frustrations and zeitgeist. Free love and hippies never really made it as far as the railway arches and the bus stops. There was no money, and not much sight of things changing for anothee 20 years, but there was poetry and a desire to shout to be heard, before house music and synthesisers replaced all the guitars.
I’m 49 and 50 in 2024, this era can never be repeated
Absolute tune I'm 51 in April:)
Me too. Big bday in April.
Me too.
Same 22nd
@@sqwidink1 ha! I’m the day after, 23rd! St George’s day!
This band is a blast from the past . . The last time i heard carter i was at school.. im 50 soon 😂😂
54. lived in a squat in Brockley in the 90's.. no regrets. 'The comfort and joy of feeling lost' was totally lost then but wouldn't change a thing.
Now you read the Guardian and have a dim view of the working class.
7/6/2023 and still an absolute banger, 57 yrs old and bouncing around with my 29 yr old son and my 2yr old granddaughter, now i know these banging tunes will live on ❤❤❤❤❤ 3:54
An under appreciated classic of the era…and still a classic in 2022
Back when we learned about new bands by listening to mainstream stations after 10pm, college radio, and watching 120 Minutes. Bonus if you remember the West Test. The 90's were awesome!
Saw Jim Bob in Norwich recently and he did this. Instant time machine tune.
Deserves a few more than 9500 views, this is brilliant song
Shhhhhhhh....it is our secret, we do not want those who listen to today´s crap stealing our music...
@@777skinner I agree I'm 16 and have only ever liked stuff like this
My flat mate used to always play Carter usm completely forgot about them over ten years since I heard this song. Great band.
132K now.
30 years old and still fresh.
just such a great song and lyric. national treasures, so underrated.
Total gold. How good were the early 90's? The lyrics are pure genus behind all their work.
They were much happier than the dark 80's
Anytime you survive is brilliant in retrospect. The "benifit" of hindsight. There isn't any.
@michaelflint4159 indeed my brother indeed
If someone said to me pick a song to represent the 90s it would either be this or sheriff fatman tbh
I was a po-faced punk so I wasn’t allowed to like this but secretly I loved it. Sounds great today and also makes me sad ❤
I remember not being allowed to like the Cure when I was into Iron Maiden but secretly did. Young muso stuff is funny. The Forsest.
This song makes make me melancholy for my misspent youth. Travelling the country, taking acid regularly and speed. I’ve taken well over a thousand acid tabs. Fucked me up a bit for a while. I stopped when one night I was tripping hard and saw the song by Tom Petty called ‘Dont you come around here no more’. I took it as the universe telling me I’d done enough LSD. My mind was broken for at least two years. I couldn’t hold a thought, the slightest thing made me ridiculously angry. The most mundane things on the radio or tv would bring tears to my eyes. I was all over the place. But Carter USM were one of my favourite bands during my acid days. Saw them live a number of times, sadly I was tripping balls every time I saw them.
I hope you are ok
🤘🤘 my teenage years, simply the best
Perfect pop song
Hadn't heard guitar quality like Carter usm since the smiths and clash 😀👌
Magic , superb.
Year after this came out, I was a goth living in a semi-derelict house in New Cross and this song felt like an anthem. Saw Carter at the legendary West End Centre in Aldershot when I was a teenager and they had only really just started, it was an amazing gig and they made a huge impression on friends that went on to be in bands inspired by them and the likes of Mega City Four (our local heroes), Senseless Things and Neds Atomic Dustbin.
Saw MC4 in Inverness. They were a good band that never made it big like Neds or PWEI.
I played footy with someone in Bromely who was a roadie or road manager for MC4
Super gay tune
Senseless Things were class ❤
The comfort and the joy of feeling lost
This and sheriff fatman are gems 😊
I was a happy storeman selling car stereos back in the day. Went to glasto and this crew were there 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
I can't seem to go tired of this one. The Only living...and 'after the watershed' have been major favs sine the early-90's.
An absolute classic of a song that I don’t remember from the time simply because I was too young, but one that I fell in love with as a teenager. Always have the gumption to scream the “Clause 28’ers” line while holding up a middle finger
If this doesn’t get you up jumping around nothing will
Certainly get me up jumping around like a idiot 😳😆
Carter had my favourite basslines never played on bass
Great tune from a great time.
Ironic that I used to see these guys in London back in the 80s now the lyrics are relevant to what's happening today in Australia.
Very underrated band loved their music
Daughter and I were at their final gig at Brixton Academy. Fantastic. Were poor security guys trying to stop those of us sitting upstairs from dancing but sometimes you just have to 😍
Was living in New Cross when this came out. Evocative.
I believe the video was shot inside The Venue
Nothing else played in my mk3 escort for a few years in the 90’s except Carter. Memories come flooding back.
Loved this band brought me right back to my youth, there's only one Jim Bob!
Carter USM!!❤❤
Fooking brilliant beyond believe still! After many years
1st time hearing this such a really happy want to dance to song
Jim bobs lyrics are epic,a very underestimated writer.love you to fruit bat.seen them many times back in the day and they were the bollox and I'm 60.

Hello, goodevening, welcome
And goodbye
Things were proper shit back then too, anyone who says they weren't is a liar. Looking back, I can see what we had then, that we don't have today. I almost said "hope" but that's not it. There was always precious little of that, but it *was* there. If it was just hopelessness, well, we can do "hopeless" and muddle through quite well. No, what we have today, is an *absence* of hope. No-one has *any* hope. Anywhere. We need to talk. About Pandora.
They need to do a comeback tour👌🏻 Seen them live in the early 90's
Jim Bob is touring now
❤ Love this song 👍
I forgotten this song for many years
What a stupid
It still ROCKS
Always liked this song but never followed this band up until about 3 years ago. Went out and bought all their back catalogue and Jim Bob's solo stuff. What can I say? The guy is a lyrical genius. Also props to Fruitbat for his contribution to Carter USM. Really wish I had gotten into them in the 90's when I heard this song 1st time around. I have missed out on such a great band, these guys would be top of my list if they ever reformed to see live. But alas, I think that ship has sailed unfortunately ☹️
I just had to LOL at the tooth sparkle at 0:32
I wonder if Fruitbat actually plays piano?
First signed band i ever saw , still love them
Legendarios...Chute de adrenalina en vena!!!
Best Era!!! Miss you guys!
Memories of a different time......
fantastic live, absolute mayhem. those were the days...
one word class
Saw them twice in the 90's live brilliant nights
I remember watching this over and over again on my VHS tape "what do you think of the program so far" Greatest kick ass rock and roll band in the world!!!!
The comfort and the joy
Top quality.
One of the greatest bands of the late 80s/early 90s written out of history by RadioX online NME...
See also the Senseless Things, Neds Atomic Dustbin etc
Shoegaze also didnt exist, and there were only 3 bands from Manchester and Liverpool...
Wish i'd gone to see them.
Never heard of this band in my entire life and I'm 46. Somehow this got recommended next in my RUclips and I'm very glad I clicked it. I like this weird mix of 80s and 90s music, it works.
Wow awesome amazing song amazing band always brings me joy
Yes!!
Soo powerful!!! Also hereby remembering a car tour to the Netherlands/Holland...
Deep mood accompanying Album :-)
Absolute classic
I was hearing them when inwas studying abroad!!!
Gloomy crowd, stand up!
We need another music revolution, the tripe that is spilled out these days are manufactured to make money and not prick the ears of our youth, I am 56 now and find these words has important today as when first written…words with something to say…

They headlined Glastonbury 92 and were awesome

I was once a boy from WV and Carter was once my favrit band.

They were quite big back in 91/92
'Haul', not 'hall'. Apart from that - brilliant. I often sing it out loud, and, sometimes, someone joins in. Top stuff.
The comfort and the joy ……
Sois los putisimos AMOS!!!!
The gypsies, the travellers and the thieves
The good, the bad, the average and unique
Lets's hear for the grebos the crusties and you and I
Hello, good evening, welcome and goodbye.
Saw them once in the late 90's and this song was absolutely amazing live.
i got to see them backing madness amazing line up

Late 80s saw them in Manchester as warm up to Madness. Carter were better by far.
Should have been massive
loving the jumper! great song.
such a great band
I lived in New Cross
Saw them at Bristol anson rooms 95,too pissed and stoned to remember any of it. I'm their number 1 fan for living life yes?
Love this song, but only just realised where Harry Engield got the Kevin character from!
We are uploading some tracks in full HD from the Final Comedown release.

Who remembers Schofield taking a tumble
Fantastic, and whatever happened to them? Disappeared when they're needed most and neither make a sound. I genuinely mean this. Such wonderful rhyming & biting cynicism. Even if not working together, where are you?
Funny as fcuk mate. Think Jarvis Cocker was funnier though when he ran on stage at i think it was Brit Awards and flattened Michael Jackson. He said he did it cos Wacko was dressed like Jesus stood with his arms out as though he was Jesus on his cross.
Thats what he said but you never know he might have known that MJ was a pervert at best or a paedophile. I mean after fellow freak and paedo Jimmy Saville died it all came out about his crimes and loads of people knew about the scum. Some for as long back as 60's even Police.
When Carter did Schofield again i think it was Brit Awards that was cos Carter Unstoppable had just sang live and Phil the Prick made some sort of sarcastic derogatory remark to the crowd about it. I'm not saying or insinuatiating that Schofield is a Perv or Paedo like Monster Michael but it came out about his lies decades later. All time masquarading as a Hetro Sexual man. Married ( to a woman ) with kids but really a bi sexual dibbler and a dabbler. No wonder they don't have Brits any more. I also remember at another UK Music Awards that Prince in his pre Symbol days won an award. Strangely when he got up to go onto stage to get it he seemed to be rows away from front. Seemed strange to make him sit there. Obviously he was a musical genius a true prodigy but very small in height. His bodyguard who went on stage with him had to be at least 7ft tall and nearly as wide. Im not 100% but i think some of crowd booed as the gruesome twosome gravitated to the stage. I dont know if they were jeering Purple 1 or his giant. Why? Prince could'nt help been short and tell me last time you saw a Star with a small minder lol.
Jim Bob played in Margate a couple of weeks ago
I hear Ian Brody❤❤
I was a bit too old to connect. Damn it ....
Im 60 me and my pal Iain would get pissed on cheap cider and dance about like daft bastards to Carter, my knees are fucked can't dance about like a daft bastard anymore, my missus can hear me in the spare room " are you listening to Carter again I can hear your headphones from the living room"
Ricky Gervais / XFM made me search for this.
2024 and looking back on 'the good old days' when music meant something and A Levels didn't, when fashion was awful and we just lived for the weekend without responsibility or guilt. I am so glad I grew up in the 80's and 90's, fuck being 18 in 2024! Classic tune from a real band, still love 30 Something, one of my go-to albums when I want to reminisce with my rose tinted glasses on.
