A few things I forgot to mention in the video - I used 5% arrowroot powder and 5% corn starch. Highly recommend arrowroot powder over corn starch. Also, I highly recommend the addition of vitamin E in anhydrous products. I believe I talked about this in a past video of my “formulating for beginners series” Vitamin E keeps oils from oxidizing. Meaning it will help keep the oils fresher resulting in an anhydrous product that lasts longer. Always remember, vitamin E is not a preservative. It just helps oils last longer by delaying the oxidation process. When oils come into contact with oxygen it degrades the quality of the oil and eventually produces rancidity in oils.
If they tell you than you won’t buy their products. I understand to a certain extent. Nowadays most things are researchable. It’s hard out there to make a living. 😩
The fact that I share my knowledge on formulating doesn't really make me scared that people aren't going to buy my products. A lot of people aren't interested in making their own products, they just like to watch and learn. & the people who do want to learn how to formulate, probably aren't going to buy my products anyway, because they make their own.
TaraLee very true! I'm pretty sure 90% of those watching just like to be informed and learn but won't actually make their own products. I think if you aren't going to make a business out of it, it's not worth buying all the stuff to make it yourself, so it's better to buy from those who already are making it. Plus supporting small businesses is so dear to me ❤️
TaraLee Not you. I’m talking in general. I’m mainly thinking about some instances in the soap making community I observed. It is their business to make and sell soap and a lot of them almost never give out their formulas. Their videos are more of a promoting than tutorial. Maybe it’s because most people that do look at those videos do make soap. I really don’t know. I was just answering in general why a person might not give it up.
More info on butters: For those who don’t know, butters in their raw form (before you whip up your ‘body butter’ recipe) are sourced from nuts, beans, and seeds. So, butters can have a nutty aroma (if they have an aroma at all) or an aroma with the characteristics of the plant the butter is derived from (like cocoa butter smelling chocolatey). Smell can also depend on where the plant grew up. Butters can add viscosity to a recipe. Like Tara mentioned butters are moisturizers. You may hear them referred to as emollients which means moisturizer (put plainly). :)
@@dhahriassia3438 According to this video by Tara (ruclips.net/video/tG03cjJf3X0/видео.html) Vitamin E oil is an antioxidant. Therefore you can use it to preserve oil/oil based products. However, the moment water is introduced to the butter they opens the door for organisms like bacteria to make a home in the product. Tara said where there is water there is life. Which is true. If you are just making body butter for yourself vitamin E oil sounds like a reasonable preservative to use. If you make a small batch, even if you get water in it because your hands weren’t dry when you got some, you may end up using all of it before there is enough time for anything to go bad. I recommend watching Tara’s formulating for beginners playlists!!! She explains a lot of this stuff. Honestly because body butters are anhydrous and a lot of butters and oils have a shelf life of a year in the correct environment you may not need a preservative at all as long as you keep it dry. Good luck on your body butter making journey :)
Am in Uganda and just started formulating to start my own skin care brand, down here things are hard to find including information…I have made terrible mistakes in the journey but I’m now happy I found a channel that can help me formulate better…Thank you Tara
So I totally just purchased a product from your etsy because I wanted to support you in your business because I feel like you've given me so much. Love your channel!
Pain relief body butters is how I started my natural skin care brand out with, exactly because they are anhydrous and I didn’t have to learn about preservatives just yet while I picked up the other ends of the business. Now I am learning from you how to take em to the next level and you are such an inspiration, and wanted to thank you!!! you truly create meaningful, useful content with such generous and lively discussion. Thank you so much for helping us all in our journey!! Ps I love adding spirulina (a green algae powder) for natural colourants like beet powder etc and other botanical like this as my tip!
I'm a Tattoo Artist and make my own brand of a Tattoo Glide Product for Tattooing. The industry has used petroleum jelly for years but it is definitely not something you want on a fresh Tattoo which is a wound. There are several products on the market but they are expensive. I started with a basic Shea/Coconut Oil recipe with essential oils and Vitamin E as a preservative and have been fine-tuning it. For my needs, I want a lubricant that is stable, natural, and healthy. I am also now working on an aftercare product to keep the Art fresh! I learned so much from this video that I already ordered a few additional ingredients to work on my formula. Thank you TaraLee for this very informative video!
These videos are so informative....as I'm trying to get things mapped out and started ....this is really a great page because you are dropping so many gems for us.....thanks
I'd rather buy the product than make myself reason being buying all those different ingredients I'd have a fortune in it just to make a couple jars. Buying from someone else a lot cheaper. I simply enjoy watching someone make it whether it be body butter on you tube or taffy at gatlinburg tennessee. But this one was very informative compared to most. Thanks again and I enjoyed watching the video.
My favorite butter is cupuaçu butter... it's very moisturizing and in my opinion, far less greasy than other butters such as shea or cocoa, besides having what I consider the "perfect" consistency (harder than shea yet softer than cocoa). I really enjoy using it in my deep moisturizing conditioner formula
Thanks for the video! This really helped me improve my body butter recipe. I'll have to pick up arrowroot, but even using the corn starch there was an improvement for me. I used to use coconut oil but changing the proportions a bit and subbing in sunflower oil to make a shea and sunflower butter made a much more spreadable and consistent result.
If you really like coconut oil on your skin you can use fractionated coconut oil it stays liquid and is at every grocery store (Walmart, Kroger Meijers, etc.) It is organic and works just as well
Thank you so much for informing me what I am doing wrong with my Body Butter. I am trying to start a business called Blackem Beauty. I started working on sugar scrubs and transitioning into body butter as well. I can tell from your video Sugar Scrubs and Body Butter are NOT the same thing. They do not even have the same ingredients for body butter. Body Butters depends mostly on how much oils and butter you add into them. Which is why I tried buying arrowroot powder to figure out how I am going to add into my products and as well as different oils like grape seed oil. I am trying to not make my Body Butter too oily since I add too much oil into my sugar scrubs I thought it would be fine to do the same for my body butters. Thank you so much for creating this video and letting me open my eyes to what I need to train myself for the upcoming future.

I really wanted to learn how to do it right, with proper tools and preservatives instead of the coffee grounds and olive oil sitting in my fridge 😂😂 I am SO appreciative that I’ll be able to make homemade QUALITY scrubs and butters for my mother for Mother’s Day ❤ thanks so much

Omd I have so much questions like how do you measure the percentages ? How long does the body butters last for ( the expiry date)? Can you make perfumes and fragrances oils next please love you 💕💕💕
check out my other videos in my formulating for beginners series. Here is a link to the playlist. - bit.ly/2tVL9Q4 Let's say you want to make a 500 gram batch of body butter and you need 70% shea butter. Then calculate what 70% of 500 is. You can do this by simply googling "what is 70% of 500" or you can do the math by making 70% a decimal, which would be .70 and multiplying .70 by 500. which equals 350. So that means you need 350 grams of shea butter. As for shelf life, check with the supplier you buy your ingredients from. I don’t have any plans on makings a perfume but I’ll keep it in mind.
@@TaraLeee how do you determine what %s to use for what butters ,and oils then also your additives such as colorants? Do you always calculate based off grams or ounces be it butters lotions shampoos or conditioners? Again thank you in advance!
This was great. What a great help this was to me and I'm sure all of us. Makes sense. Just wondering if all those extra products u r adding are good to use on our skin. I'll look up. I'm sure they r if u r using it. Thanks bunches

Great video, very informative. Just wanted to mention that there are coconut butters that melt at 76 or 82 degrees. This is good those who live in cooler places
Thank you for the information on the making BB for beginners. I am a beginner and now I have a better understanding of the use of butters; especially arrowroot, and esters.
This was a great video! I have a question, how do you come up with the percentages for your butters? I know they have to equal out to 100% but how do you know the percentage of each ingredient you're going to use?
I’m late but jus research each ingredient to know how much is recommend to use. Wherever you buy ingredients from online should have info that explains how much of a product to use in different formulations. Hope I helped
Good video, though advice for making body butter, do not mix alcohol in your body butters because it tends to destroy the character of the butters growth process. Body butters come from the African history please research on that and see how it is formulated to not only give a luxury feel but to also give full benefit of the nutrients it provides.
I don't think you are understanding which types of alcohol she is using in her body butter recipe. She is using a FATTY alcohol, that adds wonderful moisture to a product without being heavy or greasy. It can also bring body and thickness to a water based lotion. This ingredient doesn't cause any degradation to any of the other ingredients.
@@dianeespinoza8647 I am well aware of the alcohol she uses as it is on her product label. It does degrade the Shea butter, I formulate products and have more knowledge and experience on this topic otherwise I would not comment.
@@btscult4431 Aloe barbadensis leaf extract, African oils such as Marula oil, essentials etc, they will make the body butter smooth, elegant and luxe; so many natural ingredients can be used, alcohol is just not it!
Hey I made body butter been doing it for about 6 years I have evolved a lot they are all natural though I use different raw butter plus oil and wax I love them and my family can't go with out them we don't use no lotion only oils and butter I make
You the best!! Nobody ever explain everything like u do with the explanation of the products the science, math and all that good stuff in one vid amazing Tysm ♥️🥰
Thank you so much for making this video! I am trying to do some research on body butters as I wish to start a body care business. But I do have a question though. I am very confused about the percentages for the ingredients. What measurement do the percentages represent?
Hi Tara! 💘 First want to say you are my inspiration to branch off and start my own skincare business! It's always been in the back of my head as I make all of my own skin care items but you break it down so well and are so thorough from your video to the description bar. Then you understand the science behind it all!! AMAZING! My question is though.. how can I create a butter including of course butter then esters, hardeners and natural oils like Vitamin E or Argan? I am trying to formulate off of your last advanced recipe of 50 % butter 25% c12-15 alkyl benzoate 10% coco caprylate 10% of cetyl alc or stearic acid 5% IPM Can I just trade in one of the esters for a natural oil? Like the c12-15 and just add in 20% of whatever natural deriving oil I choose? I hope this all makes sense!!! You've helped so so soooo much because I love learning the science of anything and you have me feeling so much more confident to start out on this new venture 💕
Hey Tara , How do you feel about grapeseed oil ? Would you recommend using in a body butter , oil or scrub . And could you recommend a butter and oil that will help with hyperpigmentation. I love your videos by the way they have helped me so much with my small business
Hello from India. ☺️ I am so glad that I subscribed to your channel. It was a very detailed video. I prepared whipped mango butter yesterday (tried Shea butter first and failed). It was fluffy without any grainy parts. But after few hours the whole thing started to solidify. Is this is because of oil to butter proportion? I have used 70g unrefined mango butter, 30 g jojoba oil, 1g of rosemary E. O.
Recently found your videos and I’m in love! This is a little off topic but can you make a video on using fresh ingredients like fruits in skincare? I really would love to learn how to preserve and what preservatives to use for a long shelf life and Non-refrigerating.
There is no such preservative that will preserve anything with fresh fruit or fresh anything in a cosmetic. There isn't a preservative that will keep it fresh in the refrigerator. So when you watch a banana degrade in the fridge that is your cream the bacteria is invisible but guarantee it is there.
Hi Tara Lee. Thanks for all your informative videos. I am one of those that feel I want to create the most natural products. Learning about all these esters and emollients makes me a bit scared. I thought if I cannot pronounce it I cannot use it because it is made in a lab and not nature 😁. Please help me understand these a bit better?
I’m glad I watched this because I make butters on my store I recently started adding kokum butter for the first time to the Shea butter and I just made a small amount to see how it will take and my butter harden now I know not to to use a lot of kokum just a little and use more Shea butter when I start making bigger batches
Hi, I love your video, it's very informative and straight forward .My question to you is , can I add oil soluble kojic acid to make it a skin lightening butter? If so , how much and can I substitute one of the oils with rice bran oil? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks
I notice for certain skin types certain body’ butter works better for you I think you would need mango butter and small amount Shea butter no coco butter. Light oils like safflower and or almond oil
I’ve noticed it depends on the fragrance and where you order it from. Usually, the websites or companies will have the percentages that should be used. However, you can also try bramble berry’s fragrance calculator.
A few things I forgot to mention in the video - I used 5% arrowroot powder and 5% corn starch. Highly recommend arrowroot powder over corn starch.
Also, I highly recommend the addition of vitamin E in anhydrous products. I believe I talked about this in a past video of my “formulating for beginners series”
Vitamin E keeps oils from oxidizing.
But wat preservative is used in facial oils that contain dry organic plants in them for more benefits?
Hi Tara Lee, I love your videos! Can you please show us how to make a lightening serum for the intimate areas in the body? Thank you so much ❤️
Hi Tara, what do you recommend so that the body butter does not become hard after finishing mixing, which I can add to keep it soft and hydrating
Hi Tara! What percentage of vitamin E oil would you add to this formula and do you decrease any of the other percentages once added?
Can i use clays instead of the powder?

Thank u so much
U always give additional informative knowledge
That’s very helpful for beginners
God bless u dear for being genuine
You can use fractionated coconut oil....stays in the liquid form
Thank for all this information. I usually go the all-natural route as I make hair and body products for myself and family, but this takes all the scariness out of organic and inorganic beauty chemicals.
I'd like to make my own for my children my mom and sister and I'd also like to buy from small business owners too. It would depend on my time or energy! But I'm thankfully for those who share their knowledge and recipies and for those who sell their products as well!I will stray away from the dishonest company's who add harmful ingredients from now on. Health is wealth.
I USE TALLOW, BUTTERS, OILS, BEESWAX, AND ARROWROOT POWDER IN MY ANHYDROUS WHIPPED BODY BUTTER. BEST SELLER OF MY PRODUCTS
So glad I found your video. I wanted to combine shea butter with almond oil but only found videos that used coconut oil as well. I now know my combination will work so thanks 🙏
Ive been wanting to make body butters! Thanks
Great! hope you found it informative :)
I suffer from a lot of skin conditions including eczema and contact dermatitis hence I came here looking for alternatives to make my own daily skin care because the ones I find out there are very expansive. Thank you for this video ❤❤❤
hi! how was it and have u tried it??
Omd I have so much questions like how do you measure the percentages ?
How long does the body butters last for ( the expiry date)?
Can you make perfumes and fragrances oils next please love you 💕💕💕
check out my other videos in my formulating for beginners series. Here is a link to the playlist. - bit.ly/2tVL9Q4
Let's say you want to make a 500 gram batch of body butter and you need 70% shea butter. Then calculate what 70% of 500 is.
You can do this by simply googling "what is 70% of 500" or you can do the math by making 70% a decimal, which would be .70
and multiplying .70 by 500. which equals 350.
I LOVED THIS VIDEO , SO HELPFUL FOR BEGINNERS. THANK YOU. BLESSINGS!!!
You like a body butter scientist! I never heard it broke down like this I love it
I love it, you are so perfect to explain about the ingredients. Thank you so much.

Because I sometimes make butter for my family to use during winter which is almost finished.
Great video, very informative. Just wanted to mention that there are coconut butters that melt at 76 or 82 degrees. This is good those who live in cooler places
I get dizzy after watching your videos 😂😂😂 It’s so much great information. I don’t even know how where you got the knowledge from 🤷🏼♀️😍😍😍
I came across your channel just in the time I needed help, thank you so much may God gave you more wisdom
You are a God Send. ❤
Your editing has improved so muuuuch😍💚
Thank you! 😊
It's based on batch size e.g. batch size you're trying to make is 200g you would do the percentages based on 200g being 100% hope that makes sense
I’m late but jus research each ingredient to know how much is recommend to use. Wherever you buy ingredients from online should have info that explains how much of a product to use in different formulations. Hope I helped
This is so helpful. Thank you!
Would you be willing to do a video like this for body scrubs? Your videos are so informative.
Good video, though advice for making body butter, do not mix alcohol in your body butters because it tends to destroy the character of the butters growth process. Body butters come from the African history please research on that and see how it is formulated to not only give a luxury feel but to also give full benefit of the nutrients it provides.
Exactly
I don't think you are understanding which types of alcohol she is using in her body butter recipe.
She is using a FATTY alcohol, that adds wonderful moisture to a product without being heavy or greasy. It can also bring body and thickness to a water based lotion.
This ingredient doesn't cause any degradation to any of the other ingredients.
@@dianeespinoza8647 I am well aware of the alcohol she uses as it is on her product label. It does degrade the Shea butter, I formulate products and have more knowledge and experience on this topic otherwise I would not comment.
@@Scriptureswithpetrina so what would you recommend as an alternative?
@@btscult4431 Aloe barbadensis leaf extract, African oils such as Marula oil, essentials etc, they will make the body butter smooth, elegant and luxe; so many natural ingredients can be used, alcohol is just not it!
Thank you so much for this information.. your a god send ... Blessings to you for teaching others..💕
Thank you so much for the links to the ingredients 😭😭
Of course!🥰
@@TaraLeee you repliiiieeedd🔥❤️
Hey I made body butter been doing it for about 6 years I have evolved a lot they are all natural though I use different raw butter plus oil and wax I love them and my family can't go with out them we don't use no lotion only oils and butter I make
You the best!! Nobody ever explain everything like u do with the explanation of the products the science, math and all that good stuff in one vid amazing Tysm ♥️🥰
Please can you make a video on products that reduce large pores.... please I love you so much
Wow! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge!! God Bless you!!
I just discovered your channel and I love how you break everything down! Thank you for the thorough and easily digestible info :)
Your information is amazing and easy to understand. Thank you.
Big thanks from Algeria 🇩🇿♥️
Thank you so much for making this video! I am trying to do some research on body butters as I wish to start a body care business. But I do have a question though. I am very confused about the percentages for the ingredients. What measurement do the percentages represent?
That's why I haven't started yet stuff is to expensive to try and figure out on my own... I'm confused
Go futher down in her vedios, you will see the percentage heading vedio
It's based on batch size e.g. You're making a 200g jar of body butter so you would use 200g as your 100% so 70% butter would be 140g in this example
Thank you! as usual your explanation are really complete and precise. Good job! and keep on
I’m starting my body butter business soon 😍❤️ can’t wait
I love all of your videos but this is DEFINITELY your best video. I loved this so much 😩
this is just the video I needed 🤗 thank you so much Tara 💗
Great! I am happy to hear that! :)
Bzbsshssazuip🙃🥳🤣🧐
I loooooove this video,it's so structured and so organized. It's so helpful. Thaaaank you so much
Thank you very much for the video. Best teacher ever
Awwwh thank you! That is very sweet of you to say 😊
Hi Tara! 💘
First want to say you are my inspiration to branch off and start my own skincare business!
I am trying to formulate off of your last advanced recipe of
50 % butter
25% c12-15 alkyl benzoate
10% coco caprylate
10% of cetyl alc or stearic acid
5% IPM
Can I just trade in one of the esters for a natural oil? Like the c12-15 and just add in 20% of whatever natural deriving oil I choose?
I hope this all makes sense!!! You've helped so so soooo much because I love learning the science of anything and you have me feeling so much more confident to start out on this new venture 💕
I would sign up for your patreon NOW but funds are low for me but I'll be around SOON 😊
i just read your description bar fully! i’ll shoot you an email with my questions 🤍
@@katohsolovely there is definitely a science to creating and formulating skin care products!
Hey Tara , How do you feel about grapeseed oil ? Would you recommend using in a body butter , oil or scrub . And could you recommend a butter and oil that will help with hyperpigmentation. I love your videos by the way they have helped me so much with my small business
I really love how you teach do you also give private lessons? I really want to learn step by step.
Hi from Florida! Thank you for this super informative video💜
Wow.. I can’t believe it’s that easy. Thank you 💕
Hello from India. ☺️
I am so glad that I subscribed to your channel. O.
Best summary of body butter making 😍
Thank you so much! 😄
I am also interested in using freeze dried raspberry powder in my body butter, is there a best way to do this?
I love everything you do, thank you, my love, for this beautiful content ❤❤😍❤😍
Thank you so much for this well informative video!!
Excellente vidéo, merci beaucoup pour toutes ces informations précieuses 😍
I'm starting my own business. Thank you for sharing your video
I loveeee your videos ...very informative...everything I ever wanted.. everything..thank you for the detailed information you give..appreciate u...
Hi, I love your video, it's very informative and straight forward .My question to you is , can I add oil soluble kojic acid to make it a skin lightening butter? If so , how much and can I substitute one of the oils with rice bran oil? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks
I am new subscriber from India. You are awesome,,, 👍👍very clearly explained,,
I notice for certain skin types certain body’ butter works better for you I think you would need mango butter and small amount Shea butter no coco butter. Light oils like safflower and or almond oil
Tara, do you have a website? I am becoming very interested in skincare, and your videos have been great! 😊
Thank You so much for the How To My lovely friend!!! 😄 I've been thinking of making some for my Mum's Birthday 💕😊💕

Tara the queen of pronouncing things funny NAILED maquillage! So proud of you boo! ALSO how did you know I was waiting for this video!
What percentage should you use fragrances in body butters? Thank you for all your info! 💕
I’ve noticed it depends on the fragrance and where you order it from. Usually, the websites or companies will have the percentages that should be used. However, you can also try bramble berry’s fragrance calculator.
Your so informative thank you for sharing with us & inspire many to start their own business 💖
