  • Nepenthes are the only carnivorous plants with separate female and male individuals, creating unique challenges for cultivation but offering exciting avenues for scientific exploration.
    *How can one distinguish male and female Nepenthes? What determines sex in Nepenthes, and can it change?
    *How do these plants mate in the wild, and why can all (?) Nepenthes species hybridize?
    *This talk will focus on the intriguing world of Nepenthes sex, unraveling their evolution, genetics, development, and ecology.
    Presenter Mathias Scharmann, a biologist passionately obsessed with carnivorous plants, is a researcher at the University of Potsdam, Germany.

    The timing couldn't be better. My N. Thorelii x aristolochioides is producing a flower way earlier than I anticipated and I can't identify the sex since it's my first nepenthes to flower!
