Wow. The dealer quoted $300 for the part and several hours of labor to disassemble the dash. After watching your video, my bad actuator was the same one as yours. $22 at Autozone and the only issue I had was dropping one of the screws in the dash, which took me awhile to find and retrieve. Otherwise, simple job. Thanks so much for posting this.Saved me a ton of money.
Thanks for this video, blower stopped working in all switching positions and Ford told me I needed a new panel, $1000 with labour! Saw this tutorial and popped out the same resistor as in this clip and everything came back to life! I’ll be getting an independent garage to install the new resistor!
05-09 Mustangs have 4 actuators. 3 are behind the glove compartment and accessible from underneath. The 4th is behind the stereo and will require removal of the radio bracket/bezel. Some have been able to get to it from the gas pedal area, looking under. I haven't had to yet.
For the three under the glove. On rock auto would I buy just three of the blend? On rock auto they have (blend, mode and defrost). Just stuck on what types are the three under the glove
@@Theemikebell I believe that they are all the same part number. I replaced two and they were identical. That seems to be the consensus on this message thread.
Hello Everyone, I apologize for not responding to some of these comments. You see, I don't maintain a RUclips channel and rarely sign in to visit. I just decided to create a video to help people out with this issue because I couldn't find a video myself and couldn't afford to pay the dealership $700+..... There are 4 of these actuators under the dash. 3 are accessible under the glove compartment, and the other one is apparently pretty hidden behind the stereo. I do understand that some Blend Door Actuators are tucked in pretty tight under the dash and may be really tough to remove. The one that I replaced in the video was such a case. I could hardly reach it with a small socket wrench and was able to just break the screw loose. I then took the socket and wrapped it with "grip tape" that I bought at Home Depot and basically "muscled" it off by removing the screws using the grip on my fingers. I later replaced another actuator. I took the part to NAPA and the counter found it for me using their computer references to my year of Mustang. To my surprise, they gave me the exact part number as the other that I replaced, stating that they are all the same. They didn't have a different part even listed. I don't remember the part number, but it may differ from part manufacturers. Find yours by taking the part to your local auto parts store. They should have it or be able to order it for you. It's not an expensive part so ordering it online doesn't make sense because of the risk of receiving the wrong item. Thanks to all who left positive comments. However, some "disliked" my video, I don't understand that......... I just made the video to help out. It's the only video there and it's pretty clear on what to do..... Maybe it was from Dealerships?? LOL! I appreciate other users "stepping up" and responding to questions. Thank you. Those that have further questions, please understand that I don't maintain this channel and it may take me quite some time to respond. Hopefully, someone that has used my video will be able to answer, as others have already done.... GOOD LUCK tackling this job!
dude thanks so much. my 2008 has been doing this for like 2 years and was told 500-700 to replace with a $30 part due to having to pull the entire dash apart and since my AC hasnt stopped working and the clicking stops after about 5 seconds i hadn't felt the need but I know at some point it'll go out. I'm gonna test these 3 and pray it's not the 4th harder to get to one
The upper blend door actuator is a real pain. Because the lever slots into a handle on the blend door, you need to use both hands : one to put the actuator in place and another to put the screws in. Otherwise, you’re going to screw it down only to realize you don’t have your main vents working because the actuator is unable to engage.
GREAT! Thank you! I have a 2011 and it started a few days ago. Figured I could find it on RUclips. When I get around to it and fix it I'll post another comment on how it went. Screw going to the STEALERSHIP! LOL. Thank you!!!

PART # INFO! & Install Tips! Top one: 4 seasons #73012 Name: HVAC defrost or floor mode door actuator Price (AutoZone): $16.99 (not in store they had to order it) Bottom one immediately below top one: Santech #MT18550 Name: Mode Door Auxiliary unit Price (AutoZone): $25.99 (not in store they had to order it) When I took these out and took them to my local AutoZone they couldn't tell me which parts I needed to order and we spent forever trying to figure it out (also tried O'Reilly & Advanced Auto Parts.. they said that they can't look it up by the Ford part number that's printed on it. I'm sure there are other brands available which will be easier to find even using these numbers. that said I had to replace both the top and bottom one that are located on the passenger side on the left side of the glove box area. Followed the instructions from this video and got them installed INSTALL TIPS: for the top one since it will fall out until the screws are at least part way in you can put a small piece of duct tape over the screw holes on the outside and then puncture the screw through the duct tape and it will hold it so it's already right there when you got to put it in and you can just ratchet it down without having to hold it and reach for a screw. (8mm & small quater drive rachet) Another tip is that if your new part does not line up for the bottom one you can plug in the new one without installing it & turn the key to where you can change the mode and it will spin and you can just stop it and turn off the car when it's in the right position and then take the keys out obviously and unplug it again before installing) Last tip: I didn't have too much trouble but if you don't have skinny fingers and long skinny arms like I do this may be a pain in the butt for you and require additional tools like maybe a small swivel head ratchet
I ended up replacing both the Blend Door and Defrost actuators. The third one on the right side is the Recirculating Actuator but it didn't need to be replaced. I purchased them at NAPA Auto for under $20 each. Everyone else was quite a bit more expensive. Coincidentally, they are the same part number for both. Installed, working properly. In the video I commented using a 5/16 socket.... correction: 9mm socket.
please help. I drive an 07 mustang and 2 weeks ago my actuator started clicking. they replaced it and it worked great for a week, then it started clicking again. yesterday they replaced it again. it worked for a few hours then started clicking again. why does it keep breaking?
So today I removed the faulty unit and opened the cover. There were two teeth missing from one of the plastic gears. I guess you'd call it the intermediate gear. It was the one between the small gear that meshes with the little worm gear on the motor and the other one that is splined to the actuator lever arm. This particular unit has five connector pins. Apparently some units only have two pins.
I have the same exact issue on my 07 but I could not get to the upper most screw holding in that top actuator. Is there a trick or tool that helped you get to it? Also do you know if that is the temperature blend door actuator or the vent door actuator. thanks!
glad I found your video, I have a 2010 Shelby GT500 and it just started making that clicking noise a couple of days ago. cold air still comes out but maybe it's just a bad connection. gonna check it out in the morning. hopefully that's the case
Do yourself a big favor and remove the passenger airbag for better access. There's at least one video on RUclips that shows how to remove the airbag, and it's really simple. Even after doing this, the upper actuator is a fairly difficult job. One problem is being sure the new actuator stays in the slotted vent arm while moving the module into final position. It took me several attempts to do that while also fitting the X-shaped opening of the actuator onto the molded mounting protrusion. Also, I wasn't able to start the upper screw during reassembly. A family member (youngster) with skinny arms and hands had to do it, working through the airbag cavity. For reference, the driver side actuator behind the instrument cluster is the Main Panel-Floor actuator. The upper module on the passenger side (the bad one in this video) is the Main Defrost actuator. The lower module on the passenger side is the Temperature Blend actuator, and the horizontal module all the way on the right is the Air Inlet actuator. In my 2008 V6 base, the part number stamped on the original 2007-dated Defrost actuator was 6R33-19E616-BA. The new MotorCraft part is 6R3Z19E616-B. The package also says YH-1870. This is the same module that's used on the driver side for Panel-Floor. I bought mine today from a Ford dealer because of all the bad reviews on aftermarket units. Cost was about $40. It's installed now, and the clicking is gone. I opened up the old module, and two teeth were broken off one of the gears. One last thing, you can identify which module is clicking by placing your hand on it while someone else operates the ignition key and controls (to make it click). You don't need to remove the electrical plug as suggested in several videos. Hope this helps!
I don't remember the part number but I can tell you that NAPA Auto had them in stock for about $20 each. I just asked for the blend door and defrost actuators. They handed me both, and they happened to be the same NAPA part number. They we different numbers at the dealership but apparently, that doesn't make a difference. They worked fine.

on a 2005 mustang, how many actuators does it have, i thought it was two.? I just had two replaced. fixed almost all of my problem except i get a ticking sound when i shut off my defroster and it doesn't last long? and which actuator would it be? thanks..
Thanks for the video; my car has been making that tapping noise for over a year now and finally I found out what the problem is. I followed what you did in your video and the same actuator doesn't work on mine as well. Can you please tell me what part you ordered and from where? I noticed there is an actuator for air inlet and one for the defroster being sold at american muscle. Which one should i get? Please let me know, it would be much appreciated.

There is also a 4th Actuator directly behind the Dash Cluster on the right side. You have to remove the Cluster in order to get to it. It's a pain too because the Plastic Upper Vent hose is also in the way. :o) Tony K MCA#70001
I had to replace the one behind my instrument cluster. YOu take it off then you get a screwdriver or something tubelike to lift the air tube a bit sou you can see the actuator. I had that and fixed it now 6 months later i have a weird like electronic humming noise coming from the driver area dash when i turn my knob to face and floor mode
Well the clip is actually a locking mechanism so the plug doesn't fall out of the socket. If its plugged in and its a tight fit, it will probably be fine as it won't want to come out so easy.
How many blend door actuators does the 2008 Mustang gt actually have, I have seen way to many guess, some say 3 and some say four, I just replaced the one you have here with the problem and somewhere there is still a clicking noise as if there is a forth one which you have not addressed.
There's actually 4. It's probably the blend door actuator behind the stereo. I have the clicking noise and found that's probably the one at fault. No idea how I'm going to get there...
The same one is bad on my '06 GT. Trouble is figuring out which replacement to get. RockAuto lists three different Motorcraft versions. I got the part number off the bad one, but nothing seems to cross reference.
my ac started blowing air only out the defrost vent. i read that onr of these actuators is responsible. anybody know which actuator out the three is making the air only cone out the defrost vent??

That’s what I always hate about places like that they Charge a shit ton of money for something as little as that, that’s why these days if you wanna save the money you might as well do it yourself better to spend only 20 bucks vs 900
Yup! These places are fucking crooks. They will do everything to get u out of your money. It's sad won't even bother to check or research. Every car is different. They just say oh ya. Let's rip this person off. RUclips is a gold mine!
I had the same one go bad. Made a lot of racket for about 5sec then fine. It was a bit of a bitch to get my big hands up there to get it out, and one of those little red clips when flying into the void but I got the actuator out.
Does anyone know the part number to the one that's he's pointing out that is causing the issue??? It's the same one that I need. I found some on Ebay but I need the part number to order the right one.
I see there is a couple part numbers and nobody is telling us the numbers I just want to fix the clicking noise i will let you no and if you hear anything let me no! Ty
Just got through doing this. That top one is not fun and it's even more annoying to get the arm aligned. Needless to say, I shed blood on a mustang at the alamo. haha. Edit: use 5/16th instead of 8mm when you do this, it's tighter. and being an american car (mine's a very early 05 mustang gt) it should be SAE anyway.
Hey! I have the same issue of clicking in my 2007 Mustang. I now have air only coming out of the defrost vents. Yesterday, I took out the glove box and disconnected each of the three actuators you can access from there and the clicking noise continued. However, I could feel with my hand like some of the clicking could be from inside the same one you switched out. I'm wondering why the clicking didn't stop when I unplugged it though. I'm hoping it isn't the actuator on the driver's side that is bad. Any thoughts?
It the actuator is unplugged, it will not make any sound. It appears that your 4th one went bad. Sorry to hear. I never had to replace that one, otherwise, I'd of made a video.
I had the same problem with my 08 mustang I put a new aculator in and the ticking began .. I found out the issue the part they gave me isn't the same one from the original they look so much alike but aren't if you have the old one look at it verses the new one the lever part the original is thicker so it can go inside and hold down the other part giving to me is so much smaller so it wasn't holding in place so it caused the lever to come out and make the clicking again bc it was the wrong peice hope this helps

@@melisssa7777 You can just need little wrenches. little 8 or 10 O forgot which ones I use. but to make life easier i did wprk from cluster and bottom.
@@sandraesquivel4233 I moved ac switch until it moves to place of actuator and leave on in that switch ubtil everything connected and screwed back in place.
I saw 5 actuators today.
One upper blend door on left side
One right under the upper left side
One across from right side blower above kick panel left side
One behind radio center (!looked evil to remove)
One behind dash cluster right side
Wow! I thought that there were only four. I hope that the "evil" one never goes bad....
(See what I did there? Lol)
@@heliorocco7663 haha nicely done
What about the 05 model please I need help my car is doing that and it won't move the air to the wi dow to so it bad hot air on driver side and window plus wont move to the feet to so arw they in the same spot. I only ask cause people say there a 4th one behind the radio?
How do you call that part? My is doing the same thing.
I broke the actuator harness clip now i cant remove the bad actuator. how do i get a new harness that connects to the actuator?
Great vid thanks man i now know how to fix mine
You're welcome.
Mines doesn’t make a clicking noise at all.. the ac air from the main vents are not blowing air only from the windshield
Marco Leon it's the vedor door actuator one on top u can get through it from taking off the glove compartment and it will be on left side straight up there will be 2 but it will be the very top one
Mine is a 2011 Mustang V6, and the part was YH-1801.
I have that problem, what is the name that pieces
That’s exactly the noise my car is making and my mechanic wanted $800 to fix it lmao I said no because I knew it was something simple
Thanks great video I gotta do this to my 07 GT what part is it 604/231 or 604/233 ? Ty
Let me know when you find out the part number to the one that he's having the issue with that's the same one that I need.
part num YH-1870 for my 2006 gt
for the defrost
Thanks is it the part number for the one that he's pointing out?
yes top one is for the defrost. i took it off, moved the lever by hand. Ordered the part. At least now i have air coming out the dash. this part has a ton of number. i found it easy enough. here is the one i got off ebay "HVAC Defrost Mode Door Actuator MOTORCRAFT fits 06-10 Ford Mustang 4.6L-V8" www.ebay.com/itm/262101371654?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT . hope that helps.
What's that part number or part called that's the same issue I'm having???
I had that and fixed it now 6 months later i have a weird like electronic humming noise coming from the driver area dash when i turn my knob to face and floor mode
how do you get to the top actuator
So I'm checking my three and it's the one you can't get to. I have managed, however to LOSE one of the little red clips. Is this a problem?
Well the clip is actually a locking mechanism so the plug doesn't fall out of the socket. If its plugged in and its a tight fit, it will probably be fine as it won't want to come out so easy.
How many blend door actuators does the 2008 Mustang gt actually have, I have seen way to many guess, some say 3 and some say four, I just replaced the one you have here with the problem and somewhere there is still a clicking noise as if there is a forth one which you have not addressed.
There's actually 4. It's probably the blend door actuator behind the
stereo. I have the clicking noise and found that's probably the one at
fault. No idea how I'm going to get there...
The same one is bad on my '06 GT. Trouble is figuring out which replacement to get. RockAuto lists three different Motorcraft versions. I got the part number off the bad one, but nothing seems to cross reference.
Did you manage to fix this? I am having the same problem on my '06.
?
Awesome thanks for the help!
If the air won't blow at all is it my actuator ??
Rashad Hall
No, it sounds like the blower motor, or hopefully just a blown fuse.
On my 2007 mustang, the air only blows through the defrost, what can I do to fix without taking it to a shop?
Same problem here man. Did you manage to fix it?
any help with tricks getting the new one installed. I'm having major issues getting the new arm to place correctly.
Jeff Moody I am to! Have you figured out the trick yet?
What's the part name? The one that need to be changed.

Hey thank you for this video sir. God Bless
You're very welcome.
What if it doesn’t turn on at all?
for all the actuators the same part number or do they differ
They differ. Autozone typically stocks the aftermarket ones. I took the faulty one out and took it with me to Autozone to match up.
air not coming out my vent on blows thru defrost
my ac started blowing air only out the defrost vent. i read that onr of these actuators is responsible. anybody know which actuator out the three is making the air only cone out the defrost vent??
There's actually 4. It's probably the blend door actuator behind the stereo. I have the clicking noise and found that's probably the one at fault. No idea how I'm going to get there...
Great Help
What hole does the lever need to go in
I don't know what you mean by that. However, I just post videos to help out... I don't look for subscribers or manage comments.
I hope the video helped in some way.
What's that part number that's the same issue I'm having??? Still no one is putting up the part number. I need the part number to the same one...Please
Lol kind of late to the party but 604-233 is the dorman number if you havent found it (a year later)
Wow! I just got quoted 900 bucks to replace one by Goodyear. They said they have to remove the dash and I was looking at 9 hrs labor... I'm trying to replace it myself now... 900 dollars for a 20 dollar part...smh
There's actually 4. It's probably the blend door actuator behind the
stereo. I have the clicking noise and found that's probably the one at
fault. No idea how I'm going to get there...
Eric Lewis same
I first diagnosed which one it was then i ordered it off amazon for $30 bucks and replaced it for free by myself no need to remove the dashblol
It's. It coming from any of these three. It sounds like it's up behind the radio. I tried all three shown here
I had the same one go bad.
Thanks
Does this also cause the *check engine light* to turn on?
I disconnected all 3 and it still made the noise
I have same problem Caroline. Were you able to locate the other actuator? If so, how did you get to it?
I had the same problem with my 08 mustang I put a new aculator in and the ticking began .. I found out the issue the part they gave me isn't the same one from the original they look so much alike but aren't if you have the old one look at it verses the new one the lever part the original is thicker so it can go inside and hold down the other part giving to me is so much smaller so it wasn't holding in place so it caused the lever to come out and make the clicking again bc it was the wrong peice hope this helps
I'm sorry it is one of my pet pevies THE BLEND DOOR CONTROLS THE HEAT the mode door is defrost. PLEASE SMH
I was happy when I bought my first piece of murica at used condition. Now after hitting 100K miles this majestic Ford engineering is falling apart one after another. No wonder why even most mericans recommend Toyotas.
