    It's a cautionary tale with a twist. Unless we do more to protect them, coral reefs could become extinct by 2050 due to pollution & climate change. This video was released just ahead of the landmark Copenhagen summit on climate change in order to draw attention to the plight of these fragile ecosystems. Sadly, the summit ended in failure -- and the future of our reefs is still at risk.

    As a member of many different reef protection and rebuilding groups, I have watched governments make huge promises and fail to keep them. There are a hand full of Coral Farmers, Hobbyists and Businesses that are working on solutions and we have came up with a number of different experimental programs, one such program is off the coast of Tampa FL where hobbyists have teamed with scientists to start replanting a coastal reef system. It can not be left to governments any longer as they fail to act

    It's honestly devastating to see what the future of coral reefs will look like, and I'm glad they showed it through the prospective of the future generations. This is such an eye opener which shows how much limited time we have to right our wrongs. Even the smallest diffrences can make such a drastic changes to things which are way more important than our selfish wants. Lets make a difference by spreading the message and thinking carefully on how we can change our ways of living to help ocean ecosystems and the beautiful corals reefs all around the world☺.

    The Great Barrier Reef has existed for an incredibly long time. It has survived ice ages and global warming in the past, including when it was hotter than it is now. It has grown and shrunk during all of its life. The coral reefs of PNG (same species of coral that occur in the Great Barrier Reef) survive in water 2 degrees hotter.

    I have been following this crisis on the internet for quite a while and I think that the only way for change to happen is to create artificial reefs that are placed in favorable conditions. More Ocean Sanctuaries, less oil consumption, a limit on the boats we use to transport supplies, change the dragging technique of fishing (trawling) to a more favorably environmentally safer method. But after all, we humans are so greedy and cannot see the beauty that the ocean holds.

    I've watched this video, by stumbling onto it under the topic coral and this video brought me to tears.... Seeing this unchanging fate closer towards us breaks my heart and makes my soul feel empty. Why is it people only realise the impact of their actions after they do it?? Why is it that always the same mistakes are repeated and humans tend to care only for themselves. Our world is crumbling and barely someone cares (Im not neglecting the ones who are working hard snd saving it with what little resources they have). I want to know more on how I could reduce the emition of co2 on my part, we have to try our hardest to save the world ocean before we lose everything. This has to be publicly shown somehow, so common sense could be put into peoples mind. Hopefully with Gen Z moving as the main generation for these upcoming decades it can put a stop to these issues. To start this however all of us should look at each other on how we can help make a change, no matter how small it is every ounce of help is needed... More so than ever

    This really made me cry. I don't give a shit if people are laughing because they are the stupid ones. They may laugh at my movies and heroes values but you are the ones who mistaken. We are watching our world dying day by day. Human who, for me, should be the Guardian of Earth and species is failing its own role. I won't let my world dying I will do all that I can do. The "end of ages" won't happen as long as I am still alive. If I may have children before being sterile because of shitting products that worldwide compagnies are selling, I don't want to say to them, that I, with the human kind, we killed billions of beings for our own comfort and wealth and that now they live in this netherworld because of us. Because we were so selfish, so blinkered and so imperfect in our role to the point where our own mother, Nature is getting rid of us. Because we failed in our role of Protector so maybe she tries to find a better Guardian, a better child. Because Nature doesn't need Humans and she already proved it so many times. If some people are looking for a God or a Goddess it may be that one.
    As stupid as Human can be I think that as we already did last century and with all the goodwill of the World, we can prove we can do good and we deserve to live and grow better such as all the other species who lived and live on Earth. We have so much to discover yet.

      +Tag Tagger and just to give you a sense of it. You are talking to someone who cares enough about any natural resources, let it be reefs. I designed artificially produced live rocks which sustained lifeforms for the first time in the history and won an international engineering design award for doing so and the project was backed by the biggest aquarium suppliers of North America and by the biggest public aquarium company in North America. Let's just say that I know what I am talking about and I have valid data to believe in it.

    On a constructive note if you really want to make a difference use paper not plastic. And pick one day a week and donate your time to pick up trash off the beaches. It's ok to use a car to get there it will give you more time to clean. There are groups of people who do this here in my town. I think it's a great practical way to make an actual difference. Also NEVER release non native fish or plant life into the environment they or parasite in or on them can cause detrimental effects on the environment , Way more that any warming.

      The problem is, it's not just over fishing. It's temperature changes, acidity changes, and countless other problems. Just telling people not to eat seafood isn't gonna work, if we want to save the reefs and our oceans we need to join the fight and get areas protected, donate money to organizations researching how to help grow coral and repopulate the reefs. Among countless other things.

    how can we reduce CO2 level?

    • @earthtouchtv
      @earthtouchtv  10 лет назад +5

      Hi Thomas. We're glad to hear that you want to make a difference. Reducing CO2 emissions can be as simple as using less electricity, eating less red meat or recycling.
      Climate change can be reduced if everyone does their bit. Try to use less electricity, where you can walk or cycle rather than using a car, try to convince whoever buys your household groceries to get them from farmer's markets rather than mainstream grocery outlets, and make sure that you recycle plastics, metals and paper (if possible, just avoid buying products that use these materials).
      Most importantly, spread awareness! You can tell your friends and families to do their bit as well (obviously feel free to share this video with people) and let everyone know that there are things you can do to help the world's oceans.

    It was dogsh1t then and it's dogsh1t now. The Great Barrier Reef's coral cover has reached the greatest extent ever recorded.
    If we look at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) data (which isn't ideal for various reasons) the WIO (West Indian Ocean) shows 26% hard coral cover in 1985 upto 30% in 2020. South Asia reefs shows a decline around 2000 to below 25% then a regrowth to around 40% (2010) and a decline to 25% (2020). The Red Sea shows no change at around 25% (1995-2020). So the pattern in these three areas show no relationship to each other or to a changing climate.
    GCRMN data for the most important coral bioregion, the East Asia Seas, with 30% of the world’s coral reefs, and containing the most diverse coral of the ‘Coral Triangle’, show no statistically significant net coral loss since records began. The East Asia region has the biggest human population living in close proximity to reefs, and is located in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool - the hottest major water mass on earth.

    It's sad that just a little bit in the future all of these beautiful coral reefs will be gone forever because people don't care and only care about money and power. It's also depressing that our presidents aren't doing anything about it and don't care. Next up after the coral reefs are trees and then we are done for good. Although this might be a good thing because if there are no humans then life might come back to earth years later. If only our governments put the amount of care that they put in security to hide nad things and used this care and power to save the ocean's ecosystem.

    Wont the fish with genetic abnormalities, suited to survive without reefs, dominate the populations and continue the trend of evolution and natural selection?

    • @silas4584
      @silas4584 7 лет назад +2

      good point, but could the rapid change in their environment be to rapid for them to adapt?

    • @echoesofsilence7823
      @echoesofsilence7823 7 лет назад +2

      is it natural selection though..... did you really think that through xD. There will be no adaptation if the environment is changing so rapidly.

    • @mikestoneadfjgs
      @mikestoneadfjgs 7 лет назад +1

      SNEZ HD The only way adaptation would fail is if the environment changed so fast that all life died in a few generations.

    • @echoesofsilence7823
      @echoesofsilence7823 7 лет назад +1

      umm.. all forms or coral will be dead in a few decades.. i dont see it adapting. What will be next. food providers, bigger animals. It wont stop

    • @mikestoneadfjgs
      @mikestoneadfjgs 7 лет назад +1

      SNEZ HD I've googled it sufficiently. The projections are that the majority of corals _might_ be gone by 2100 if the temperature rises 2ºC, but corals are adapting and it is unknown how many will survive future bleaching events. Ive seen numbers between 20-80%.

    People evolved and have done what they have done to this planet, now the planet will adapt and evolve to survive. Who's to say the coral reefs that come after the ones that will be destroyed by suppos'd global warming will not be more spectacular than the ones we have now. I am not saying that we should be going out of our way to destroy the planet by unnecessary means, people are selfish and will always put themselves first , I am only saying the planet will recover and evolve a whole new set of species as it has for millions of years.

    Coral reefs are not in that much danger anymore. Read the scientific literature on the topic, you will see that the people saying that reefs are in danger are solely saying so because it promotes "last chance tourism" and that the reefs are being more well managed. These sob stories are really trashy and leave a bad taste in my mouth.

    We are still emerging from a mini ice age, (~500 yrs ago) so of course there is a long term trend towards warming. Carbon dioxide can make cold water less alkaline, but warm waters actually lose CO2 to the atmosphere, so no ‘acidification’. There are many causes of coral reef death, but global warming is not the culprit, nor is its infinitesimally small CO2 component. Current short term (~20 year) temperature trends are going down, not up. Get your facts straight before you take in all this BS, friends. Look at data, not biased rubbish, and base your opinions on that instead.
