In a certain place at which I was stationed, I'd watch the morning takeoff. It seemed that the aircraft had climbed out of sight before crossing the far end of the runway.
Can’t understand people who hit dislike. So many haters and jeleous people in this world. Very rare video and professionally done! Thank you for sharing.
Knowing next to nothing about aircraft, this blows my mind. Starting from near nothing, a vertical ascent in mere seconds. If that's not the right stuff I don't know what is.
that was certainly a shallow launch. I have memories of this beautiful lady launching vertical straight to 80 thousand feet. I saw this beautiful shadow on my scope, she did not move. Until she moved, then I could no longer touch her. Dragon Lady.
Lol we used to spy on you guys back during the Cold War, this plane could map out your whole country with that big eye camera at the belly of the aircraft. America sure does like to take pictures
The U2 was stationed at Laughlin A F B, Del Rio, Texas in the early 60's during the Cuban crisis. I was born and raised in Del Rio and was in college during that time frame.. I knew many of the retired pilots of the U2. They were the 4080th. Heard many stories how they would bet to see who could climb to 20,000 ft. the fastest. Remember their record was 1 minute and 30 seconds or 90 seconds to 20,000 ft. In Texas we call that shittin and gettin. Today Laughlin is the largest Air Force training base in the USA. It is names after Jack Laughlin who was the first Del Rio pilot killed in WW II. He and my mom were good friends and classmates graduating from DRHS in 1932. Every day I thank God for all the young men and women that have gone through LAFB and on to defend our country and freedom. There is a small museum dedicated to the U2 and the men who flew it in Del Rio.
In those days a chase car was not used but a Cessna 310 was . It would fly along side the U2 and talk them to the ground. I watched this many times at LAFB. The last U2 to fly out of LAFB is now on static display at LAFB . My next door neighbor, Vic Milam . was the pilot to bring it back to be put on display. On one mission Vic got into a flat spin had had to bail out of the U2. He was at 49,000 ft when he left the plane. Victor L. Milam, 84, passed away December 28, 2015. He was born August 11, 1931 in Arkansas City, Kansas. Vic is survived by his son: Gary Milam and wife: Jodi of Colorado Springs. CO. and grandchildren: Jessica, Austin and Andrew. He always wanted to fly. He obtained a private pilot license while in High school. He graduated from Cowley County Community College in 1951. Vic enlisted in the Air Force at 19, and then completed airborne radio operator school. During this time he applied and was accepted for Aviation Cadets. He trained in the T-6 and graduated with class 53-B.He was assigned and flew F-84s until 1957 then he volunteered for the RB57 and was assigned to Laughlin AFB. Vic married Louene Bochat a Del Rio native his wife of 53 years. In 1963 he got checked out in the U-2 program and flew it for the next 10 years. He flew some of the early Cuban over flights. Vic is a Life member in Dandelions and has flown the T-6, T-33, F-84 RB57D, 0-2, U-3 and the U-2A, C, D, F, G, R with a total time of 5213 hours with 186 combat hours. Vic was stationed in Japan, Davis Monthan, Edwards, Laughlin, Taiwan and Andrews AFB. Vic flew missions out of Bien HOA Vietnam flying over North and South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. He also did sampling missions off Alaska. While in Eniwetok he participated in the nuclear testing projects observing and flying through the cloud above 60,000 ft. His final U-2 assignment was as Operations officer of the U-2 CIA unit for three years in Taiwan .Vic retired from the Air Force in the Grade of Colonel in 1975 and has made Del Rio his home ever since. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 from 5-9:00P.M, at G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside service will be on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Westlawn Cemetery at 2:00P.M. Military honors will be presented. Funeral arrangements with G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home, of Del Rio LTD, 114 Fletcher Drive, Del Rio, Texas. 78840 Ph: 830.775.2000
You'll find videos of the landing procedure at yt. Basically when it lands, a high powered car races along the runway behind the plane and a pilot sitting in it talks the pilot down, so that balance is maintained almost till standstill. Then the small wheels are put onto the wings again. The wingtips also have reinforcement to be able to be dragged along the runway.
I think the planes currently flying were built in the 80s. They do a lot of research for NASA, NOAA, as well as military use. They're also not as expensive to operate and can carry a wide variety of sensors, cameras, etc.
SR-71 was massively more expensive to operate and maintain. The thing leaked like a faucet on the ground lol. Not to mention required its own type of fuel. The SR-71 is still probably my favorite plane though.
After so many decades in service the U2 is still as gorgeous as ever. It's one of the aircraft I'd love to see in person, great footage!
I saw it once very close at RIAT airshow. I hope you will see her too !
Saw her when I was deployed the first time in 2005. Could not believe the climb rate.
It's a plane but i think...
It's a glider on steroids.
Wow, awesome catch! Very impressive plane. Like a lot! Greetings!
Thanks a lot mate !

Yes ! Definitely . Amazing climb rate
What beale? Or guam?
Such a cool aircraft to get to see in person, that was one impressive climb!

What an excellent and rare catch! 👏👏👏
Thank you very much Santiago !
One of my favorite military airplanes. Great stuff!!
Amazing aircraft !
And only the right stuff can fly it.
*Jeremy Clarkson voice
What a machiiiiiiiiine!
James May will love it too ! Did you watched his flight on U-2 ?
@@topfelya I did indeed. I'll watch anything with may in it to be fair
I counted 6 seconds from initial movement, to flight. That’s insane.
Knowing next to nothing about aircraft, this blows my mind. Starting from near nothing, a vertical ascent in mere seconds. If that's not the right stuff I don't know what is.
What would happen if you put a jet engine on a glider?
Dragon Lady: Yes.
That takeoff run was so short.
Very interesting plane! Great catch!
Thanks a lot!
Majestuoso!. Excelente video!. FELICITACIONES!. 👏👏👏👏👍
Бодренький шпион :-) Спасибо! Здорово ты его поймал :-)
Unbelievable rapid takeoff ! Once Ive seen this airplane very close at RIAT 2018 airshow. She is very small but the wing span is so huge
Great video mate, always learning here :)
Glad to help

Is it the U-2U now?
OR still U-2S
Old U-2R/S Crew Chief, I miss my girl BB 1096 anyone know if she is still flying????????
Great Video
Watched a NASA ER-2 come and go from RAAF Garbutt / Townsville in 1993 as part of TOGA-COARE. Most impressive.
That has an interesting design. Great catch!
Such a quick start . .woow😍
This is an Amazing Aircraft, thanks for the GREAT Footage 😎👍
Glad you enjoyed it mate ! In the future I will upload U-2 landing circuits
Like a rocket!! 🚀🚀🚀👌
Really awesome video man! Love that sound! Liked!
Or was only 6.5 seconds from rolling to liftoff...very nice!!!!
Had to rewatch after seeing the landing video, didn’t notice the aux wing support wheels fall away on take off
Well spotted mate !
My mom texted me "I love you" and I replied, "U2 Dragonlady." She's like, "WHAA?"
Wow! How do the wings not get ripped off during that climb??? Awesome machine!
Those wings are very thin and rigid
1:09 is when it starts its takeoff.
Это что-то невероятное 👍👍👍Спасибо
Я рад что вам понравилось Натали

Anyone know what Vy is for this thing? Those wings don’t seem like they can handle much dynamic pressure.
Man what a plane..
Great footage. How he will land without extra gear?
At the end of this video is the thumbnail link for U-2 landing. Please have a look !
Thanks🤙🏻

It says that both Sheppard Afb and Lackland are bigger than Laughlin. Lackland is fuckin huge when it comes to training
@@chupacabrasforever4405 I should of said pilot training base.
@@chupacabrasforever4405 who is it? I think it is wrong!
Why it had "additional" support for wings which later disconnected?..
How it will land without them?

I do have a video of U-2 landing. You can find the link at the end at this video
That dodge charger was really trynna get melted
A really short take for a big plane..u2 is a big military plane. A great 60's warplane.
Cool
Not vertical.
Good grief that thing can climb
No kidding, it's got more wing than Sean Evans' freezer
😮 200 MTS flying?!
Fun Fact: The "U" stands for Utility! Ain't that sumn
Ayyy 100m takeoff
very thin plane, impressive
This is actually the TR-1
I wonder why U-2 is still in service, it's a cold war era plane. I mean, SR- 71 went offline for more than two decades.
