True that! Children were not the precious darlings of today. They were more like second class citizens. There is an episode in "Mad Men" where little Sally puts the dry cleaning bag over her head and is scolded by her mother for throwing the dry cleaning on the floor. Parents of the boomer generation had hard lives. They went through the depression as kids and many were adopted out to be workers on other people's farms. Emotions were buried and people taught their children how to survive. May seem tough to some, however, I fear for the younger generations who are coddled and have little ability to solve problems or become self reliant.

It is impossible for anyone who wasn't alive during the Lucy years to comprehend how beloved that family was to us fans who tuned-in every week to see them. It is impossible to understand the giddiness and warmth of "the Beav." Or the endearing charm of Harriett & Ozzie and the Nelson sons, especially THAT son we gay kids most wanted to get undressed with. Boy, could Ricky stroke his guitar. Like wild dogs, we lapped it up. These and similar family-shows of that day, taught us about families, and showed us how dis-functional and dis-appointing our own families were. That was a double-edged sword. TV was real, our lives were lacking. We didn't cozy to the cognitive dissonance we were experiencing; the term hadn't been installed yet in America's plumbing. You had to be there to comprehend the exuberance of being alive: Elvis on Ed Sullivan (who?), John-Paul-George-Ringo on Ed Sullivan, Diana slug Mary on Motown 25, the night Michael walked backwards. Didn't he? Trust me on this, the truly Magic Moment you un-borns missed out on, and can never/ever have, is spending Saturday evenings with Bob and Carol and Ted and Eunice, and MTM, and Emily, and Sueann and Lou, and Mama, oh God, Mama, the absolute Summit of Saturday. Tragic-Magic, when Mama told Eunice that her pilot light had gone out, in the windmills of your mind. "Sorry." Carol never/ever broke, but that night we saw TV History being made. I still quote to the clouds (no person alive would get it), Eunice's alter ego having the last laugh: "THAT'S a good one Mama." Maybe the pinnacle of peeing-in-your-pants Saturday, was that time Scarlot saw something in the window and she just had to have it. Oh good gawd, not the curtain rod. While I'm stoping by those woods, I will never forget bouncing off the walls for three hours, the night, finally, when Emily turned on the light, to see Bob. Zenith!!! JHC!!! TV never got better than that one, Mama. THAT was my absolute biggest summit of Magic. We Booms were happier to be at home with OUR true "friends" than out on the towne with un-true ones. Saturday Night, alive, Home Alone, because that's where our hearts were. Imagine, a night of love, a fest, every Saturday, and in repeats. Tacky, right? That would never happen in today's climate. That was the last of Collective, a once-in-a-lifetime Time that can never be again. Kids, we Booms had Bogie & Becall, Bette Davis' Eyes, Mick and Gilda, and real-life "Saturday Night Fevers." Occasionally, we Boomers even had "Glad to be Alive" moments, in the Sun. We all stopped by Sam's Tavern for a beer, or Archie's Bunker's Place for an argument, and we were better people for it.

I remember hearing Lucie Arnaz and Desi Jr. in an interview speaking about their nanny, an African American woman. She was Lucille Ball’s right-hand and took care of the children like her own. Lucie Arnaz said that as far as their mother was concerned, leaving her kids with this woman was as good as if Lucille herself was with them. She trusted this woman completely. Lucie Arnaz stated that this woman really filled the void in her and her brother’s lives due to their parents’ long absences at the studio. Lucie Arnaz also said that her parents preferred to be at the studio working and interacting with other people on the set because it was a welcomed distraction from home life which was full of tension and arguments about Desi’s infidelities. I wish I could remember the nanny’s name. If anyone knows this woman’s name, please leave a reply.

desi arnaz sr. was kind of a genius. he was from cuban upper class and could do complex math in his head (very important for contracts with percentages etc.) here were his ideas: he got them to film i love lucy (instead of kinescope) and paid for it but insisted they own the show (made them a fortune later). he hired the best cameraman in the movies to film their show and that guy invented the three camera sitcom method still used today. he hired vivian vance after seeing her in a play by himself. he hired william frawley beause frawley and vance didn't like each other and he thought that would make fred's zingers more funny and it did. he got the writers for the show (the real stars) and came out before every show and warmed up the audience. he came to lucy at the height of their success and told her RKO was for sale and they could buy it and have their own studio, OR they could take what they had and retire and try to live peacefully and enjoy their kids. Lucille said, "Buy it." He formed DESILU and had so many hits going at once it gave him ulcers. for example, he'd read a book called, "the untouchables" about eliott ness chasing al capone and thought it would make a great show. the andy griffith show was filmed at desilu. he also drank a lot and thought in the old cuban terms--your wife is married, you're not. that said, the kids said when he came home, he was home, he spent time with his kids, played with them, took them for nature walks, talked about god. lucille was just on the phone talking work all the time.

Thank you, really helped. She was a tad hypocritical about a commentator "get your hands off of her" during a seminar thing at ucla. But then i noted her creepy comebacks to a couple guys. Or just how shed like treat different people more sternly or stoicly based on their appearance or gender. Gave me bad memories of some crappy teachers from grade school. Not that i think your input was meant to put her in negative light. It seemed most genuine explanation of her and him with what little I knew of them. Also , her interactions made me wonder if desi jr maybe was a little beaten down by her intentionally or unintentionally. She did say they called her lucille "Balls". Maybe she behaved harshly with the poor guy and mama's so important to a son's emotional sttability

I can't believe all the judgment going on here by people that didn't even know Lucy and Desi. They hear one interview by one of the children and now they're authorities. Lucy came from a very humble background with much hardship. Desi came from a very privileged background which also embraced and encouraged machismo. Lucy was always waiting for the floor to fall out from extensive reading of her biographies. She found such fulfillment in her career and also felt that it was the security for her family. Desi responded to the stress of business management by drinking... Excessively. He also was well documented womanizing around Hollywood and Lucille lived with that shame for a long time . When Desi's addictions grew to the point of embarrassment for his family and his Hollywood status along with the womanizing... Lucy had to let go of the love of her life. No one here should pass judgment unless you walked in their shoes. Desi and Lucy remained connected till the end of Desi's life. One of his last phone calls was with Lucy where they professed their enduring love and understanding to each other. My only complaint with this docu is putting pictures in of Keith Tribideau as being representative of young Desi Jr. He had issues with being in Keith's shadow for most of his childhood and to continue that lack of research here, is insulting to the person this documentary was supposed to be about.

This happens in many families, not just Hollywood stars. Having parents absent and a child left to their own devices is very common especially starting in the 60's. Back then your parents would have been born depression era which is a completely different work ethic. Parents really expected their children to do what they were told, study hard, etc. just like they did. But in their childhood what was expected had vanished by the time they parented. They just assumed they'd parent like their parents did, sans the true struggles(depression, war) that didn't really exist in 60's childhood life. Many kids growing up in the suburbs didn't really have the kind of support they needed and too many things to distract them, TV, drugs, etc. Which is why you ended up with the 60's hippie era and everyone acting out. Far different era Jr grew up in and he was not alone. Lucy and Desi like a lot of 60's parents had no clue how to parent in this new age.

I just can't feel sorry for someone who was probably given a lot . I'm almost his age and grew up with a mother who was extremely abusive and my dad who never knew because he worked so much to take care of his kids and wife. Lucy stated they had a great time on the I Love Lucy set. She gave Desi credit for the show's success. He was a good businessman, and talented. His book "A Book" is worthwhile reading. He did mention his philandering stating Lucy "should have known those picadillos meant nothing." Lucy may have been abrasive, and self promoting, but Desi was guilty of damaging the marriage. She said in later years If she had to do it over, she wouldn't have stayed with a wayward husband. She seemed to love her kids. I doubt Desi Jr had much to lament.

Desi Arnaz Jr. grew up to be a very deep thinker. He’s a Christian. Very knowledgeable about religion, spirituality, and philosophy. I love to hear him speak on these topics. He has so much more to say about life and experience than I ever heard his parents speak about. Maybe Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Sr. were more guarded about what they said because they were in the spotlight. Or maybe they just weren’t the deep thinkers that their son turned out to be. Anyway, I’m glad Desi Jr. was able to find a path for himself and had children and a stable marriage of his own. I wish him the best. ❤🙏

I think it’s reasonable to assume that being the child of famous actors has its perks. On the other hand, absentee parents are not really parents at all. I’d guess it’s like being a very wealthy orphan. Having a loving nanny would help one develop a sense of self-worth. But it’s a tough way to live when your parents only see you occasionally & you have to be on your best behavior, while feeling hurt inside.

Yes, you’re correct she was definitely obsessed with her work and her words on a talk show I believe with the Kavat is that she really was only happy when she was working. I would imagine her kids did have an absentee bother at times and of course Desi when he was not working, he blew off his stress by boating, running around and drinking. The thing that they created to keep them together, the I Love Lucy show was in the end not enough, and it ended up separating them.

I'm not defending anything Desi Sr did that led to the breakup of his marriage. Even if Lucy wasn't the best mother and wife and had a temper and didn't have a particularly motherly temperament and at times may have put her career ahead of her family, (although I don't think she realized any of these things except her temper), she still was justified in ultimately divorcing a man who was drinking heavily and was by all accounts a pretty scary drunk and who also had been cheating on her regularly pretty much their entire marriage, thinking as long as it was just physical and not emotional it didn't count as real cheating. And Lucy went out of her way over and over again to try to make things work with Desi Sr. Anyway, in spite of all of these weaknesses, the one thing that really struck me watching this was how in every single picture Desi Sr you can tell just from his look that he absolutely adores both of his kids. In the early episode, (especially Season 3), you can also tell from the looks Desi gives Lucy at times when she is not looking that he absolutely adores her as well. Towards the end those looks go away, but they were definitely there for awhile. I know that's not what this video is about, and like I said that one thing doesn't completely make up for the drinking and cheating, and I'm sure he also occasionally put career ahead of family, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that his love for his children and wife was absolutely real whatever else may have been going on.

I know a guy who worked for her and was inside her home on many occasions. He stated that the way Lucy Sr. talked to Desi Jr. on the phone was heartbreaking. Meaning, she called him every dirty word in the book and totally trashed him verbally. My friend said he was in shock to hear the way Lucy was yelling at Desi (Her son) .... for who knows what. He even said she was a very cruel person to just about everyone around her (Including Gary) and he said he had to walk on eggshells around Lucy. Truth.

Lucille Ball commented that she could “act funny,” but that she didn’t “think funny.” She said she could never have thought of the scripts for the I Love Lucy show. She did not have a sense of humor like that of her own. But she was able to bring life to the character of Lucy by acting. I say this in contrast to Ellen Degeneres who is able to act in comedies as well as have a standup act and was spontaneously funny in her interactions with the guests on her show. Lucille Ball did not have that kind of sense of humor. Unless she was acting for comedic purposes, she was a very serious, humorless type of person.

A great article. But you might want to correct. The picture you have of him as a child drumming is not him, but rather a picture of Keith Thibodeaux (actor) who played little Ricky on I Love Lucy.

Let's call a spade a spade; Lucy din't inherit her mother's beauty and Desi din't inherit his father's talent or fame. They INHERITED THEIR CASH.

Lucie is an incredibly talented actor, dancer, singer and overall performer, which she obviously inherited from her parents. And how exactly would Desi, Jr., inherit someone's fame? What a silly thing to say.

I don't agree that you stated that Desi Arnaz,Jr. had a miserable life with Lucille Ball as his mother. His father cheated on her and they both caused misery to their children. I think you did a great story with the wrong headline. Lucy showed motherly concern for Desi as you pointed out on several occasions. She wasn't a perfect mother but she wasn't totally bad. I have met mothers who abandoned their children. She didn't do that. It is hard to be a working mother on that level. The highs and lows of show business is quite demanding. Your story was great, just change the headline. It sounds judgemental. We don't what it is like to be children of actors. I love Lucille Ball as an entertainer. She was wonderful. Please be kind going forward.

Lucy was a great mom. I mean she had to take charge of the business because of Desi Sr. wild ways. She also had to leave Desi because of his cheating. So, those are challenges for children to have to deal with in any circumstance. I heard that Lucy could be controlling, but look at what she was responsible for , Desilu Productions, raising her children, and her own career.
I feel celebrity children are very fortunate, but not always appreciative of the advantages they have. Desi Jr, has been in and out of trouble throughout his life, he was very loved by the industry, and I don’t remember him having a hard time being famous, he and his sister had good looks, mom’s successful shows to guest star on, access to privilege…, but Desi Jr. lacked discipline. And, it was sad, because a lot of people wanted to see him and his sister succeed.
I guess it shows that you have to work for what you want out of life no matter who you are🤔☕️

Lucille Ball appeared determined to perpetuate her extreme success with I Love Lucy through three more sitcoms (The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, and Life With Lucy). This drive to remain in the spot light long after the bright lights of I Love Lucy had faded is a testament to the addictive quality of fame. She always seemed like a sad person in real life.

I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show then Here's Lucy. I Love Lucy ended because of her divorce and Vivian Vance's desire to not have to work with William Frawley. She ended The Lucy Show because she sold Desilu to Gulf & Western and had made enough episodes for it to be syndicated. I read that she was ready to leave television but created Here's Lucy to help her children establish themselves in the television industry.

@5:57 I can't swear to it but I don't think that is Desi Jr. That is the actor who played Ricky Jr on I Love Lucy. Keith Thibodeaux, also known as Richard Keith, is an American actor and musician, best known for playing Little Ricky on the television sitcoms I Love Lucy. Pretty sure @6:09 is too. You see him again on The Andy Griffith show as Opie's friend Johnny Paul.
