What's most incredible is Nick Barker actually recorded every song on this album in one take! I remember reading that somewhere when this CD came out. Yea, it's not just Nick's ability or his pioneering style that is most impressive, it's his compositional choices! He really elevated the role of the metal drummer with this CD. Unsatisfied with just keeping time, he enhanced the sound of every other instrument being played while adding tension, dynamics, and accents in all the right places. It changes the music from 2D to 3D.
@@michaelglindmyer3336 he isn't using doubles either. at least not in terms of hitting order. it's regular LRLR hits, just the technique to hit the second LR hits is executed via ankle instead of leg
Everybody talks about the technical skill in Nick's drumming but the creativity required to come up with all that is simply mind-blowing. Him and Gene Hogland are the extreme masters
Nailing the technical aspects of this song is massively impressive, but nailing the FEEL of the song... Unbelievable. You manage to maintain Barkers groove during the whole thing, I'm not sure many people realize how it is to replicate another drummers feel.
As a guitar player, Nick Barker is my favorite drummer! This album opened my eyes to these aggressive black metal blast beats and double kick drums! I really enjoyed your cover! Really brings out hot genius Nick Barker is!
Bro YES! I was 15 years old when this album came out. I remember going home after school everyday and playing this song....for years. You fucking NAILED IT dude. So great. And damn 1 footed blasts wtf you crazy 🤯
That's crazy bro. I actually remember when I first heard you playing in brain drill back in the day. I heard this album when I was 15 as well. Same with Cryptopsy and several others, origin, Nile and such. Crazy enough my bday is 11/20/85. Good to see you're still crushing it bro!!
Wow man. Perfection. I am not a drummer. I play bass and guitar. I am not that much into blackmetal. More a thrashmetal and deathmetal guy. But this 1 particular song of Dimmu Borgir has real awesome drums. That quiteness and then the drums fall in again. God bless man. It sounds friggin wonderfull.
Thank you for this cover, It was pure pleasure to watch and listen. My dreamsong is "Dusk and her embrace", which is also played by Nicholas, as you know. Now, after 12 years of learning, playing in different styles with completely different musiciants and bands (even big band), I'm working so hard to be able to play this song, because heavy music was the reason why I began to play drums. Still fighting with my double bass skills and pedal settings, because at one day I can play Nick's fast and short outburst, at other day I barely can move footboard without lag (feels like beater is so heavy, spring is slow and etc.). Also my stamina is below average on this heavy stuff, maybe it's just suboptimal tecnique and bad breath habits, unstable posture.
This is incredible. Barker stroked every fill and completely destroyed at all times 100% of the time. The way you conserve energy pulling this off is impressive, the amount of double strokes you used really displays how monstrous Barker is
Every time i came across DB drum covers from Barkers times, i cant stop getting amazed by his brilliant drumwork and talented drummers that covering songs, big thanx for that.
I love how precisely you're able switch between push pull and singles depending on the pattern of rolls, as well as how you fit the extra stroke into the push pull motion for the triplet feel beats. Great drumming!
I agree 100 % everything you said about this song, Barker has been also my all time favourite drummer and I was blown away when I heard this album for the first time. It's a blasphemy that Shagrath hates this album and especially that drum sound so much and now they are remixing and mastering it, for nothing. -_- Flawless cover btw, respect!

@@finnofaman4557 I think that was another drummer, no? There aren't a lot of covers of this song, for the obvious reason. I think I also saw that same content.
Excellent cover man! Even with stellar technique this song demands endurance. This album was the soundtrack to my friends and I growing up in high school around 2000-2004. Nick plays a full set, usually without a metronome, and seems unphased by the physical and musical demands. I remember reading that most of the songs he recorded with Dimmu Borgir were done in a single take. Like, what the actual fuck? He's a real living legend and the most important unknown drummer in the world today. I purchased a drum kit and learned to play around 2001 mostly because of Nick Barker and Danny Carey. After a couple years I was pretty good on the skins and I could play some Tool songs. But I could never play any Dimmu songs! Just learning to play a single verse requires practice, patience, and technique that simply isn't available to humans until you unlock your ultimate at the bottom of your skill tree. Nick has inspired so many musicians that today's metal wouldn't be the same without him. Thanks for learning this song and performing it for us! 🤘🎶 The rock n roll hall of fame is patiently waiting to be inducted into the Nick Barker.
