Man, I appreciate Matt's honesty with him talking about him navigating adhd, ocd, and anxiety. I got diagnosed recently with adhd and bipolar as an adult in my thirties, and hearing how he embraced it and became determined to turn it into a super power is really inspiring. He's absolutely sincere and it's refreshing!
I think he's just built that way tbh. I recall him saying on a stream way back something along the lines of "I have to be super busy. When I do all of the things, it's the minimum requirement for me to not lose my mind".
My life changed when I made it a goal to take all my routines for health and cleansliness, and condense them into an efficient, 40minute sequence. Organization is about opening your time, and mental power.
I nearly jumped when this interview came up on my recommended hahaha Matt is such a genuine, humble, and accomplished artist, though the most telling thing is his attention to the supporting and up-and-coming groups; a true mentor and leader-by-example in every respect. The chemistry here is immaculate and I’m thrilled about the mind-blowing collab. The best interviews aren’t nearly long enough and huge thanks to Nik and Matt for taking the time out to just chat and share
Matt is the best. I’ve been a fan since ascendancy. Saw him in Massachusetts in like 06 I think? His voice was wrecked. He could barely talk on stage but when the song started he gave it all. I have been so impressed by him since.
Didn’t know you moved to Orlando !! That’s my hometown! I met Matt recently at a local hangout after having drinks.. super chill and awesome, maybe I’ll see you around now haha
Damn so cool to know that one of Matt's favourite tracks off Ascendancy is also my favourite. Departure just has a different vibe altogether. Whole album is an actual masterpiece. No skips, just let it play. Still listen to it regularly to this day. Thanks Nik for getting Matt on here again and thanks Matt for being a great role model to young musicians and people in general. Will always look up to him.
I can relate to Matt so much. An SSRI has been hugely helpful to me. It's definitely not a cure all or the only tool but it has been so good at taking the edge off & letting me focus on other coping strategies.
22:00 I feel like it's just a massive generational difference. Gen X and older always go yeah, i've got mine, so fuck you, and they pull the rug. Meanwhile, a lot of younger people just hype each other up. Like why wouldn't you? There are so many absolutely unbelievably new artists, and that just never would have happened without the support
I saw a quote somewhere. Just because you win doesn’t mean I always lose. I took it as someone’s success should be celebrated and it doesn’t mean I’m any less successful
Once I borrowed my dads pickup truck to help my friend moving. He has sirius xm, so I tuned in on liquid metal, thinking it's the only radio channel which I would love the music. Turns out I didn't know any songs and my non-metalhead friend headbanged for the entire time because Matt played anime metal theme songs. It was a nice change of pace.
Seeing Matt do what he loves makes me smile. It also makes me want to get into streaming and practicing like that. Seems a lot more fun. Also, we need more buddy-collabs in metal in general.
It's funny that Matt mentioned people not paying attention to them because I remember going to a gig in Melbourne back in 2010 (best thing my mates ex ever did for him) and this guy in front of us went mental for "Forgiven Rival" and "As I Lay Dying", he then sat down for "Trivium", then the crowd sang the entire Sinner album as it played over the speakers and when "Disturbed" came out that guy that went mental earlier grabbed his shit and left
I never knew he liked the times he came here to Buenos Aires that much! I was there in 2012 but sadly couldn't make the last one. I hope Trivium comes back soon I'll be the first to buy the ticket
The only time I've had the pleasure of seeing Trivium live was in Omaha Nebraska with Coheed and Cambria and Slipknot in 2008, when they were doing Shogun. It was a sick show. That's also the show that I first discovered Coheed and Cambria, and they became one of my favorite bands of all time.
Damn, the bullying stuff takes me back. I’m a millennial, same age as Matt…. We were all such dicks to each other, like in general. So much “pulling yourself up by dragging others down” energy. I’m so glad that’s just rightly seen as unacceptable, juvenile, shit behaviour these days.
Just went and listen the song! Bad ass! Matt long time fan! I have always loved your vocals and lyrics! Big influence on my own writing and playing! I mean ember to enferno! From the beginning! I’ve loved trivium!
I've just watched Matt interviewing Tuck (BMFV) and now watching this. I've never been so jealous about anything in my life as I am now for Nik, Heafy and Tuck. I am sitting there, almost 29 years old, have guitar for 10 years yet still can't play properly (or even at all), never seen any bigger band live, never done any type of show. My life is a misunderstanding 🤣 I am very thankful for my friend to show me metal music and let me play guitar for the first time in my life, which became my passion, which I've never had, but I wish I had done it sooner 🤷🏻♂️
@@rebekahcarter8120 maybe I’ll start a podcast and work it up until I get to the point where I can interview him haha. My anxiety has been bad a for a while now. I hope you are doing well Rebekah!
I was at the SF show at Slim's in 05 with COB and Amon Amarth that Matt talks about. That crowd was fucking rough on them, but they still kicked ass! I tried to give em as much love as I could, but yea that crowd was rough. Look at em now.
I’ve been very critical of Matt’s vocals over the last 10 years or so. I know why he has been being cautious with his voice, but it almost felt “phoned-in”. Glad to see he’s finally able to get more aggressive with his delivery again.
Yeah I don’t understand the hate for it, very dark theme with the lyrics it’s just such a badass album especially with the bonus tracks included, the only albums I like more than VF are Ascendency and Shogun
I kind of wonder if that band who made fun of Matt's vocal squeak thought they were just giving the new guy shit versus being actual bullies. Not excusing what they did, however, a lot of those dudes from older generations have a blue-collar mentality and don't realize they are being shit heads.
To Matt's take on terrible music in martial arts gyms it is generally true. Although I did go to a kempo school and they often just played metal. It was way more enjoyable to throw kicks at somebody when I'm being screamed at 😂

the guy is so busy and organized that made me question my existence 🤣 so much discipline 👏
I know what you mean
He's half Asian! Bastards! LOL

My 12yo son was born with ears that stick out like open car doors. He loves metal so I'm glad he has a guitar earo to look up to.
Lmao. I liked that
Matt seems such a genuinely sound dude. Looking forward to seeing them live again (with BMFV).
Seeing them with Bullet in Birmingham on the 31st January 😁

it's amazing that Matt is bringing back the Ascendency scream, the chef's kiss would be bringing back the Ascendency singing live
You need to go see it Liv as they are playing it in full live
Yeah riffs and solos like Ascendency would be cool too

Great interview. Heafy really brought the Beefy to “Fall Forever.”

I loved to see Trivium when they toured with Volbeat and Digital Summer a few years back!
Excited to see them again at Sonic Temple!!! 🤘🏼
Matt's one of the coolest people in the industry and his outlook on the adversity Trivium's gone through is genuinely inspiring.
Sweet interview.
Love Matt
