I've heard the bells at Chandler Road ring all day, since my childhood when I stayed at my grandma's. We used to cross there everytime she needed to go to the pharmacy, and back then they still had the weak yellow pedestrian boom gates. I've been through there many times, and hearing those bells brings back a lot of memories. Thankyou.
Well it's been a whole year since I uploaded this, and I've gotta say I didn't think it would be as popular as it was! Thanks everyone for the positive comments and support. I appreciate it.
I think it would be good to update this video with a renovation show style before and after video of how they've all been upgraded and removed. As I think most of these are gone now
Great job filming them for posterity. Personally I'll be glad to see them replaced. I lost a young family member in a train pedestrian accident. Sadly she was 15. She had a head full of thoughts about her exams her friends on the other platform waiting for her and a boy she was going to go on a date with later. She died at a station, I had personaly taken her to a few times. as a child. Lecturing her on the dangers of crossing train tracks, as big brothers do. I couldn't imagine that years later it would be the place she would make a fatal mistake. It's a technology designed for the days of horse and cart. The best part is knowing other people won't have to go through the gut wrenching agony of losing loved ones in the future. Anyway good job. Cheers.
On the Lilydale Line as of 2021, the 2 level crossings at Maroondah Highway, Lilydale and Manchester Road, Mooroolbark were removed by building elevated rail bridges and 2 new elevated stations at Lilydale and Mooroolbark. And now as of 2025, the 3 level crossings at Cave Hill Road, Lilydale, Coolstore Road, Croydon and Dublin Road, Ringwood East will be removed. The level crossing at Cave Hill Road will be closed off to divert traffic, and build a pedestrian underpass under the rail line, as for the Coolstore Road, Croydon level crossing removal, they are building an elevated rail bridge and a new elevated Croydon Station. But as for the Dublin Road, Ringwood East level crossing removal, they are lowering the rail line beneath the road into a rail trench with a new Ringwood East Station below ground.
5:12 somebody save the bells here! Use them in America! 6:29 nice horn! 9:04 I find those "tram squares" cool! I think most of these crossings have the 50 year old triangular gates! 18:19 that horn sounds nice! 19:10 I thought only NSW crossing had pedestrian alarms! But these alarms do sound different than the ones in NSW, and more like those in the UK! 22:06 that seems odd the the traffic lights are in the middle of the crossing poles! 34:08 those bells sound broken! 37:43 I've never seen a long-distance bus with a trailer before in either America or Australia!
If they are removing 50 sets of functioning boom gates then in theory another 50 level crossings could be upgraded to boom gates with this equipment. However I haven't seen any government plans for this to happen!
Good video. I'm honestly one of the few people who actually misses the Burke Road level crossing. Why must the interesting be ruined by your government?
I am inclined to agree with everything that was said regarding the removal of the Eel Race Road level crossing in Carrum. Why is it being removed when only a very minimal amount of traffic crosses it, yet crossings such as Keon Parade Keon Park, Glenferrie Road Kooyong, Glenhuntly Road Glenhuntly, Greens Road Dandenong South, Tooronga Road Tooronga, High Street Glen Iris, Union Road Surrey Hills (to name but a few) are way more congested and dangerous but have been overlooked?
Im writing the comment halfway through this video correct me if this is on here. What about the Narre Warren level crossing on Webb ST in peak hour it is banked up to the Princess Highway and to Shines RD on the other side and it’s single lane
I laughed at the very first scene. A police car drove forward over the "keep clear" markings, the lights started and the road ahead had vehicles on it. The police car stopped and then reversed because they had gone too far. Then they stopped on the keep clear sign. Can anyone else spot what is wrong with this? The black car on the left had to reverse and take a new position on the road before wiggling between cars to turn right. Congestion is very much a function of ordinary driver behaviour.
What about McMahons Road Frankston? I used to live down in Dromana and that one seemed pretty bad being on an extremely busy main road (In fact, up until recently, was the main road down to the Mornington Peninsula). Although it's not as bad now due to the Frankston Bypass and it's not really that busy in terms on trains as it's not on the suburban network and only carries Vline sprinters down to Stony Point and the occasional steel train to Long Island Also, McGregor Road Pakenham is getting pretty bad now, as McGregor Road has become a main thoroughfare into Pakenham since the Pakenham bypass was built and since the road goes from a divided 4 lane carriageway into a single 2 lane carriageway just before the crossing, you can imagine how bad it is now
When you say "remove" do you mean they are closing them and people have to use completely different roads, or do you mean they will build a bridge so there is no need for the level crossing?
Honestly I actually think that either Toorak road Kooyong or High street resovoir are the worst at the moment . The traffic at toorak road can be so bad and backs up into the Monash freeway and glenferrie road . High street is such a spaghetti instersection with so many lanes and roads and stuff that’s it’s so crazy to get through it.
@@yourlocaldolphin Small Roads dosnt mean their congested, for example, The Puckle Street is bigger but has less congestion if we compare it to like uhhh surrey hills crossing and even Heatherdale.

I find it amazing, at about the 1:00 mark, there is a police car having to reverse out of the safety zone as the booms start descending.

I'm kinda happy removing the dumb general signel bell level crossings
yeah me too cuz it's litrally nealy at every crossing

Too
1:38 Was on the steam train to Lilydale yesterday, and traffic was just banked up so far, we had to go John street.

Cool video Stuart
Maroondah highway in Lilydale has a nice e-bell
Thanks :)

Here we are in 2023... it would be worth revisiting these sites and see how may have been replaced....
I've gone back to a few, lots of changes
What model of video camera did you use?
I used a Sony DCR TRV355e Handycam for most of the footage. For the additional footage I got in November 2015, I used a Sony HDR CX405
Are there Safetran Type 3 E-Bells and/or General Signals Incorperated Type 1 E-Bells?
Most of them are GE Signals Type 2 E-Bells...

You don't have any videos of when most of the crossings on the Lilydale line had hybrid bells
Nah I didn't start filming crossings until they'd all been replaced unfortunately

Gardiner was the only crossing that sounds like glenferrie rd Kooyong
Centre rd clayton, just me or did the lights skip from green to red
Why does this look like it was filmed in the 90s 😂
I had an awful camera at the time!
When you say "remove" do you mean they are closing them and people have to use completely different roads, or do you mean they will build a bridge so there is no need for the level crossing?
I mean they build a road bridge or underpass above or below the train line, so there is no need for the level crossing
In your opinion what do u reckon would be the worst rail crossing in Melbourne at the moment?
Hmm, probablyCherry St in Werribee. A complex array of roads and round-a-bouts spliced into a three tracked level crossing. IT IS A MESS
