@microbusss Very true. Here in the US it is law that the train honk 4 times before reaching any crossing. If you dont stop for the lights and gates or stop on the rails at any point you get a ticket. It is your fault if you get hit because here trains have the right of way. Educate drivers on train safty or let them get tickets and lose their license.
Let's forget about the lives. The level crossings hold up traffic and if idiots get killed on the tracks, this holds up the trains. Both the roads and the railways are too busy to intersect at same level.
To be fair though it's a matter of psychology. If you're bought up in a world where you're directed around all dangers then you'll grow to switch off towards keeping an eye out on your surroundings. If you look at less developed countries, people know how to look after themselves and you see things like people sitting on the edges of speeding trains and stuff lol, do that in a developed country and we'd all die cus we have no idea how to look out for ourselves
Well why blame the railroad when it your fault for not stopping at the crossing, or stopping on the rails? A train can't stop for u, you have to stop for it.... People these days. Ha
The railway crossing signs look almost identical to the ones in the United States. The only differences are the "X" in the U.S. is at a 45 degree angle, the sign reads: Railroad Crossing (as opposed to Railway Crossing), and the gate is on the other side because we in the US drive on the correct side of the road. LOL. The red lights apprear to be the same size, and the sign font is the same. Stop, Look, Listen, Live.
@robertgift in europe, they put the door down before 10 minutes till the train arrives the spot, one has enough time to get out and run away if one trapped.
It's now 14 years since Sanuran Muaremi died in one of Melbourne's worst level crossing Bee Gees tragedies but now Furlong Road St Albans level crossing is gone
Many people don't seem to know what a train is. They should have seen the headlight of the train, a minute before it got there & I know the track. Just like the goose of a bus driver who was on V/line rail replacement. Not realizing that freight trains were still running & got his coach wrecked by the lead locomotive.
I agree, when i hear about these accidents, i have no pity for those who get hit by trains, i feel worse for those driving the trains and the first responders. It is all well and good to say that 'we need grade separation', but as soon as these people realize that the money will come out of their pockets, they start complaining. They want separation of road and rail, but they want someone else to pay for it. here is an idea, do not be impatient and wait for the train to pass?
These level crossing vids are fun ... why do drivers enter level crossings when lights flash? It is a world wide problem. Buddy, your Mum was careless.
Wait, so isn't it against the law in Australia to obstruct a crossing? In England we have plenty of level crossings but don't have this issue. If there's traffic on the other side of the crossing, you stop short of it and wait until it's clear so you don't have to stop on the track.
@puketinho Waiting 10 minutes is ridiculous. Better idea: DO NOT CROSS TRACK UNLESS ROOM TO STOP BEYOND THE TRACK. USA crossing signals activate 25 seconds before train arrival. 25 seconds is enough time to get out and get away.
Level-Crossings ARE dangerous. Yes, 99% of cases are the result of an idiotic person, but the railroads/governments aren't so much concerned about saving that moron, so much as keeping others safe from such stupidity. You have the risk of derailment (ex: 2005 Glendale Metrolink Crash), psychological trauma in witnesses, collateral injuries/fatalities, costly repairs, service interruption, costly time in court, etc. Is that worth the 100s of millions to build a separation? I can't really say.

@robertgift i cross every day, it sucks me to waite ten minutes, this is not enough, if the next train is approaching the door remain closed for more ten minutes, but i never heard an accident or fatility on this crossing, may be the good side of dilemma, but 25 seconds are extremely short for a decision tho.
although i am american, i know a few things on train crossings and austraila is no exception. one thing is that if there is a lot traffic on both the tracks and road crossing, as in trains and cars per day, and there isn't a lot of space for cars to actually get out of the way or worse not much space at all, the problem becomes clear. the solution isn't to put crossings underground, but instead to make more space for cars to get across unharmed. another thing that can be useful is a computerized light/train crossing detection system where if a train is detected from as far as 3 miles away, the lights change before the crossing turns on to allow for more traffic to get across while at the same time allowing people to get across even before the train comes. improving the road space while benefical in the long run, depends on the space that can actually be improved and not privately owned. the costs for upgrading junctions and train crossings are much lower and more efficient than the crossings they got now, at least by the looks of it.
