Hi Jim, thanks for doing all these great videos...I’ve been watching a bunch. What do you do with all the leaves and branches you prune off your big shrubs when you prep them for removal? Do you chip this material up for mulch? Are there any materials you steer clear of for making your own mulch? I’ve read that black walnut is terrible, for instance, but I have a bunch of black walnut trees on my property so I’m wondering how to get rid of the leaves and branches other than burning?

Looks great man! I like to use shredded pine bark mulch. Any concerns I should think about other then it can float away a bit easier in the rain? Thanks Jim!
+Owen Sands I would say that pine bark of any kind is the best mulch, because it last longer. But the floating thing is a big problem, especially if your landscaping for someone. That's not a call I want after a rain.
yeah luckily the drainage on my property is decent so I don't have to fix much. I have about 12-14 yards worth of beds too. :) Thanks Jim! You are right too about using all the organic matter up. I will take my neighbors leaves too and shred them also stuff I find in the woods behind my house haha.

I love hard wood mulch. I have a steep grade ridge that I am going to plant this spring. By watching your videos I think pine straw would be best. Do you agree.
Any opinion on pre-emergents for lanscape beds? Curious if you use them or recommend them vs just hand pulling/roundup weeds. I know preen is available at the big box stores and I think snapshot is another pricier/better option.
+Mikeoz I use them in the nursery but I have never used them in my yard. I think that any kind of foot traffic. Human or critter would break that chemical barrier pretty fast. My main weapon is mulching in late February and cutting off the first round of weeds. Then I do it again in August to prevent the fall weeds.

+Adam Stevens I have never met a cheap bale a pinestraw I would buy. I sell longleaf pinestraw at my place on Cleveland Rd. I'm opening back up this weekend. I always look for longleaf straw. The cheapest stuff is from a different type of tree and last about half the time.

Cypress is definitely hardwood. They are for top dressing

Can you use hay to mulch ?
For sure. Sometimes it could contain weed seeds that could be problematic.
