Epic adventures with Packy. My brother bought one, and his hooks/carries, too. The closest I ever came was a 300 with a Columbia White Dot in the 1980's. Wood lanes, too much oil, and that day, the ball wouldn't break 4 boards. Back then, no surface either.
WOW!!! Amazing Perfection! I just got a Spy to replace my Columbia Yellow Dot Bleeder which got chopped in half by a broken ball return. If I can even do 1/4 as well as you did I will be happy. :) Don't forget, Glen Allison shot a 900 series with plastic (Yellow Dot Bleeder) while drinking Crown Royal. ;)
Packy, did you ever find any use for one of these things? I’ve been thinking punching one up and throw it on the dry boards on house, let me play straight without that super early hook my purple gives me. We get so wet dry even on the left in the house I bowl on, I wanna be able to move back left and just trap it a little instead of trying to circle it, which is a sure recipe for getting 9
Ya know... I've often wondered why more companies aren't putting a decent core into a plastic ball. Likely because they think people won't buy them because the industry standard is plastic = spare ball. But if you back up, plastic used to be the greatest thing before urethane came out... its what everyone used. It would be a great teaching tool for kids too when they transition off of their regular plastic. Instead of jumping right into a reactive, they could go to plastic with a core. More Controllable and allows them to learn how a core can change your balls reaction.
Idk. If you throw the ball like an adult league bowler with 1 hand(like 15-20mph and moderate rev) you won't get very much movement. I agree the plastic balls with a core would be great for some but the other 90%+ bowlers would get zero benefit. You have to be a two hander or someone with a pro release to really make use of plastic as a strike ball. Just use urethane if you want to teach someone how to do all the work.
@@stompingpeak2043 I disagree. Urethane balls do not force you to "do all the work". They have modern urethane composition and modern cores but they grip the lane earlier than any other cover technology so they are smoother on the backend. Plastic with a good core would be a great option for all bowlers on tougher conditions and would be a step down from urethane.
I haven't bowled much in recent years, but I would absolutely keep an advanced-core plastic ball in my arsenal now. Back when I was bowling more, I owned a couple of them (the Clear Wolf back in the 90s, and the Lane #1 Clear Buzzsaw later on). Still have a NIB Ebonite Pinnacle from the 80s - that was one of the first plastic-with-a-decent-core balls that I recall. From what I remember at the time, those pieces would work rather well (and often hit hard!) on a lot of extreme wet-dry and/or shorter patterns, when everything else seemed to be too unpredictable.
@@frankdellorto7035 I'd still just reccomend a urethane ball with a weak layout if you want that minimal movement. Since plastic will not work very well for 99% of people. Or just get a weaker reactive ball.
I'd like to see a 1v1 with the Radical Spy and the Black Widow Vis-a-ball. Honestly because I picked up the Black Widow Vis-a-ball for a spare ball and maybe very dry lane strike ball. I didn't know if any other plastic with a core at the time.
I bought the Spy as occasionally our league patterns are burnt. I bowled a 278 oob with the Spy. I keep it as the last ball in my bag. Ball hits amazing and I’m an older senior one hander with lower revs.
When you hook the ball is there a little more wiggle room for where it can touch pins to get strike? Because if not why not just throw straight obviously slightly next to head pin? It all depends on throwing in the right spot each time so what makes a hook work better?

I just picked up a spy because we have above ground ball returns and I can't play the inside line on the right lane. This ball is awesome! Im going to replace my spare ball and carry this instead.
I shot a trio of 300 games with the clear wolf over a summer (and averaged 230+). Unfortunately, they were not durable enough and twice I had to replace the ball due to cracking apart in only about 4 months. I now throw the Radical Spy and the Pyramid Pathogen Blue Dot and both are a LOT more durable. (The anchor bowler on my team coined the term "reactive plastic" for them.)
