Back in the 90's I bowled with a guy who would always yell "20 pounder" when someone got a messenger or a lucky carry. It's interesting to finally see a real 20 pounder in action.
Packy back in the 80`s here in St. Louis, Mo. The ABC had their HOF. On display they had a Home made bowling ball from the 1920`s that was used in Chicago that was chiseled out of a solid piece of granite. it weighed in at 38 lbs. with only a 2 hole grip . thumb and one finger.. Someone asked why any bowling alley owner would let someone use a ball like that? If you can bowl with a 38 lb ball using only your thumb and one finger... Who`s going to stop you.. Enjoyed the video.
The balls that I’ve seen get stuck most often are the 5# ones that we let the kids in the Saturday morning bumper program use. The 4# ones and the 6# house balls come back fine.
It seems like it's usually the seniors with the 10 or 12 pounders that get stuck the most. Especially if there's a lot of oil or if they are throwing old equipment that has never been extracted.
If you want a lot of weight in a small space, use TUNGSTEN. They make Tungsten fish weights, shot for reloading, etc. EDIT: Tungsten is roughly 2.5X denser (heavier) than steel. So replacing the same amount of steel with tungsten. the ball would've weighed about 26 lbs. :-)
Years ago, a buddy bought my old red Hammer 16 lb. He drilled a side weight hole out and far into the ball. He put a small piece of rebar in it and made it 18 lbs. It hit like a Mack truck!
Going back to the late '60's, an acquaintance loaded an AMF magic circle so it had one pound of top weight. Planning to turn adult shortly, he used it in his last city tournament at a center with overlane ball returns. Unfortunately, sometime after the tournament started, his ball did not make it up the ramp and started rolling back down with a very noticeable wobble. He was suspended from juniors and not allowed to join the ABC for another year. This was featured in the Suspension Report section of Bowling Magazine at the time.
I did something similar when I ran a pro shop in the early 90s. I drilled a big deep hole in two different balls. We loaded bb's and fishing weights in both. We gave them each a name - the "Catfish/R" (there was a Piranha/C and a Nitro/R out at the time, so we played on those names. Then, the other one actually rattled as I think I used part of a thumb slug to make a hollow chamber. That one was called the "Rhino Pro BB." We had fun with them for sure.
I love the video man! It’s actually crazy because you played at the lanes that are 2 minutes from where I live and it blew my mind! But I’m happy to see more Wichita two handed bowlers!!
I got a Sure-D Pro ball up to 17lbs 10oz back in the 70's and anything high in the pocket was toast. I had to get it light or just barely flush. It was all drive.
An interesting experiment would be to hollow out the center of a regulation ball (not sure how without cutting it in half), creating a slide area with a moving weight front/back, side/side to see if you could influence the ball to do exactly what you want. I imagine it going very well, or REALLY bad- no middle ground on this one. The idea is from looking at different cores from the factories, and different shapes of them. The weights could/should move too much or you create “wobble”, which you don’t want. But arranging it on a front load off the side of the two finger holes may induce the ball to spin better and curve harder. Anyway, random thought…
I have always wondered if getting a weight to transition from the outer edge to the middle, and making the ball RG number decrease by a crazy amount would create stupid amounts of hook.
many years ago I was bowling a big money league. Long story short we caught this guy putting fishing weights & sinkers in the ball. They took it into the pro shop and it weighed just short of 18lbs. He got thrown out the league and suspended from ABC. Ahhhh good times
Packy, I tried this back in the 80's with an old Black U,,dot. I used fishing [ sinkers] and the ball crushed the pins. Very noticeable wobble. I didn't have a pro shop's help. I put the lead in a weight hole and sealed it up with some liquid urethane. Not very easy to control.
I used to work the desk at a center.periodically we were called and asked if we had 16 pound balls.when answering in the affirmative the caller stated" it must be hard to walk".packy dissolves that myth lol.

The older bowlers watching this video are saying, "psssh, been there done that. come from a family of bowlers and fishermen, remembering my youth of sitting next to the coleman stove watching the dull piece of lead turn into a shiny piece of wonder and now being thankful i can still remember that, LOL
A new challenge for you, Packy, with whomever you choose, though preferably another pro (or even a Wichita toe): Two games. First game = 6 pound ball only. Second game = your/their own equipment
You used a decent hooking ball for 20lb. There is another guy out here @220 average bowler, on the tube that is pretty funny and cool like yall. He drilled up a couple non hooking balls at 20 and 23lb just recently. The 20lb ball seemed to hit and carry better. Nice to see you using a hooking ball to do the same.
So I was just talking about this with the owner of my bowling alley I bowl at. He has a almost 20lb ball he made by filling it with lead. But he went one more step further and drill the pins out. Filled them with lead so they are 5lb a pin.
Realistically the heaviest bowling ball you could make without a rather large fortune would be with around 200 lbs of tungsten at around 650 USD (not counting the ball), something tells me it would be hard to find a place that would let you roll it though...
Imagine a bowling scandal like the fishing scandal. Instead of filling fish up with weights, you fill your ball up with weights and bring it to a tournament lol
Love the video PacMan. Bro you funny as hell and don't even try to be. Shit kills me LMAO. Definitely my favorite bowler. Period. Jason Belmonte who??????
Cabela's and a Honda Accord. Whole new level of respect. Use lead (or gold). But go to a tire store and ask them about their old tire weights. Or at Cabela's get some cast lead pistol bullets or lead shot. Steel isn't much. Use lead... or gold...😅😂😅
Did you add extra epoxy to get the top of the holes round again? When you showed the flare lines they looked a bit flat. I ask this because I have a cracked ball (3mm wide and almost around the entire ball) and after seeing this, I might epoxy the crack and try to use it again (I don't have easy access to new balls and they are very expensive).
To get an even distribution of weight what about using melted lead rather than bbs. Because it would be more like a heavy weight block depending on how the hole is drilled
I throw a 16ib ball… do u think I should move down to a 15 pound ball so I can get more speed? I hit pocket all the time just 16 is heavy to throw fast
I think the funniest thing I did was when I was bowling in junior league. I had a Pearl White ball, and I had my dad drill 2 more holes in the ball. People looked at me funny when I had all 5 fingers in it. Let me tell you, you can really get a lot more hook out of the ball when you can use all of your fingers!!

So the lanes back then were made of concrete ?
Is that ball in a museum somewhere? It should be IMHO.
@@SteveWilliamsDTM It may be in the USBC HQ in Texas
