I’m in the UK and have a 1999 NA MR2 , with the 3SGE engine. Not outright fast in a straight line but lovely in twisty roads. I’ve a motorcycle background and treat it ina similar way : slower into corners and faster out. As mentioned in the video it’s all about keeping the weight in the right place. My favourite review comes from a five year old little friend “It’s so noisy I can’t hear myself think. But I get to sit in the front next to you.” The fun is in the noise and handling, but on a long drive the car’s strengths become its weaknesses. As a toy they’re wonderful but would be hard work as an only car.
Very well said. I recently picked up a V6 converted car to go alongside my 94 turbo - that helps with some of the long drive issues you refer to. It's a great compromise between NA and turbo.
At 4:19 The disk like sticker stuck on the top left of the front window. This seal indicates the date the car needs to be inspected. This is called the tenken seibi-zumi shiiru (点検整備済シール) and it is issued by the Japan Regular Check and Maintenance Inspection Promotion Association.
Finally! You have an MR2! I believe that the main reason why JDM cars rust differently than US Spec cars is that in Japan, they get a different type of rust proofing. I also have to say, that many JDM cars, even econoboxes, have a particular charm that you can't find anywhere else. :) It's great to see you back on camera Paul! 😀
Finally Amesie... review MR2s! (the Sonnet is cool, but MR2s have a quirky character that might be your next calling). I've owned 5 MR2s and have driven one since my first car '87 NA(normally aspirated) purchased 9/93. It rotted out about 2005, and I still have surviving drivetrain, interior, and panels. I resto-modded an '87NA to an SC, own an original '89 SC, own a '93 Turbo (unfortunately wife got into an accident no fault of hers) and a donor rust-free '93NA body for the swap.
Idling a little high for where the temp gauge is sitting. Very clean in and out though, looks nice! I've had 5 mr2's, 3 turbos, a v6 and a NA 3sge. Oh and i own a roadster. Theres nothing like them. I really enjoyed this review, subbed.
The American cars got the 5s-fe, and the Japanese cars got the 3s-ge. The 5s-fe being a 2.2 and the 3s-ge being a 2.0. The latter somehow making 66 more HP with less displacement. Probably a higher compression ratio, a wild cam, and RPMs.

My 3S goes hard, never seen a 5sfe here in nz probably an american thing, us kiwi's have the 3sge, to 3sgte over all revisions toyota made :b
The G in 3S-GE stands for performance, so the 3S-GE may not have passed US emissions regulations. Or possibly this: The 5S-FE makes more torque, I think. They put them into USDM cars as (I believe) they had the US market pegged as wanting pedestrian, drivable commuter boats.
3sge in JDM 5sfe in the USA. 3sge is a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine with electronics by lotus and head by Yamaha with a Toyota bottom end.. great engine. 5sfe is a usdm camry engine Amesie, if you need parts the 1986-88 celica GTS in the usa used the same engine, aftermarket, check out TwosRus website for parts.
A I recall they came out with 3 variants of engine...3S-GE..3S-GTE (Turbo) and 5S-FE(Camry engine) here in OZ...Almost all came as a manual trans...100.000K's = 60.000 ml and it's timing belt time..They're peppy little buggers...I find it strange that a small weep would render it unroadworthy but some sizable rust is deemed to be okay...Other way here..Damp but not dripping is a pass but any rust is a fail...A pretty fair review mate.
@@AmesiesCorner Thanks for the reply I appreciate it!! Planning on picking up a N/A soon hopefully by the end of this year just haven't found a nice one
Also we got rh drive toyota caviler 2.4l motor rebadged GM crap. You know the one with the coil packs built into the engine cover that crap out regularly and the water pump and bypass pipe nightmare. How toyota got sucked into that i'll never know.
I swear to god being a young car enthusiast is the worst thing ever, can't wait to grow up, get a 9-5 job, slave away, buy an MR2 and enjoy the rest life has to offer
I've driven a US naturally-aspirated one, and I have to say that anyone who doesn't put in a turbo engine or v6 is just owning a paper-weight. They're painfully slow, and not by car guy standards. They're turds. Slower than stuff like Geo Metros.
So glad you are back posting videos, This car is really unique!
I learn something every video!😊

I have owned my 1990 NA 3sge (Australian model) for almost 10 years now and I still look for any excuse to drive her.

Thank you for that fact!
They feel bigger than a Miata because they aren't tin cans. They were solidly-built and a little on the heavy side because of that.

No idea. They were all made in the same place. The ones for US and Euro markets were simply put on a boat.
Was this engine better than usa?

Great video, Amesie. As a Brit', I don't see what your problem is shifting gear with your left hand ! lol.
great review, thanks for showing all angles of the car.
Great video Paul, I think I got your name right this time.
Those are famous for ending up in the cabbage.

That sticker @ 4:20 says "Die American dog" LOL!
Just a tip for future videos, change the driving video angle so it’s more forward to see the dash/road rather than the seats & you.

that is so cool thank you for reviewing this car :)
Always wanted an MR2, just went past that old skool tech stage, would be alien driving one compared to a modern car I would say.

It's all about the sw20 with the 3sgte or the aw11 with the 4agze
What happened to the new shop? Looks like your working for the same employer.
Obviously he didnt get it. I asked a while ago, lol. that's what he said. he thinks some one one here bought it. IDK about that, though.
I love Mr2 sw20
New Zealand & Aussie got these as well no just japan.
I had a way funnier commercial but it was flagged. Oh well..
yeah i have one of these mr2s here in nz, Glimited early editions came with powersteering :b
Nice car. I don't think I could shift left handed.
WoW! So awesome!
Love to own one
wtf is "g-limited" my mr2 is g limited and i have no idea what it means. tis a n/a 3s-ge 1991 any help would be appreciated.
100.000 Klm is 60.000 miles hardly broken in
Most of those quarter glass stickers are Japanese cartoon related
How's the visibility of the front windshield is nice wide like a Honda or really hard to see out of?
Easy to see out front not so easy out back.

Cool with enuff years and laps of the Sun the import is legal.

Has that hose from hell know for leaking

俺もね〜エムアール2好き🐙
MacPherson = low cost. That is the only reason to use it over a double wish-bone.
Has that car got paddle shift
Those are to release the steering wheel.
American engine 5sfe Japan engine 3sge
So basically it’s a spin off of a Porsche.
