I have had to start resisting or I'll have no space left in the shop... there are piles of them still waiting to be used. A fair few bedslat offcuts made it onto the wall, but there are many, many left. Perfect for shop projects!
I'm making a video asking the burning question, "When is an offcut a keeper?" (I haven't been doing this for 5 years yet), and your video is part of the reason I'm making that crucial inquiry. I don't currently have enough space to keep all of the chunks I've made, so I'd be glad to know what you consider a "burner/trasher" piece. Love the wall, by the way! Cheers.
Ha! Generally for me if it is "Not-Pine" it's gotta be pretty small before I'd turf it. My thinking is hard wood scraps can always be glued together to make funky panels... or walls :P MDF, ply and pine offcuts I only keep if it is going to be useful for testers and such or is a decent size, no limit, depends on the dimensions. If I had a wood burner I'd probably keep less and bigger bits but in a unit that is not really an options ;)
Cheers Sumo! I feel vindicated for all those times I should have thrown out a little piece of scrap and thought... _Nah, it might come in useful one day_ That day was today! 😆
That was one of the best examples of where to use pocket holes! Never going to be seen and strong enough to complete the task! Awesome feature mate! Looks great!
What a cracking feature wall and great to see the 'Barber's trimmer' in action. 🤣 I especially love the montage at the end showing the projects that the scrap came from.
I'm glad you noticed! There are literally a dozen or more really 'distinctive' bits in the wall I can name exactly where they came from, and others that can be identified from the species, like the oregon from the boat build or the cedar from the dice tower. I am really glad I held onto the all... but even more glad they have found a permanent home :)
You were part of the inspiration for this one Jesper! But I thought _Who wants to use all equal thickness and width boards that fit together nicely?! No! Let's make it much more fun and complicated using completely individually sized offcuts instead_ 🤣
Great Effort James - Come up Awesome. Time-consuming but definately only of those projects worthwhile in the end. I work in a small space too - so for dust extraction, i ended up with a 4" portable unit (mainly to be able to store away) and a ceiling mounted air cleaner (made a huge difference).
I've had the Carbatec 1HP wall mounted unit and piping in my storeroom since I got the CTS... just need the time to hook it all up! After I've made the Logo for the wall that will be next on the list if for no other reason than to get the boxes out of my storeroom 😅
Awesome looking wall James. I heard all the cool RUclips woodworkers have a pallet wood wall 😉. Joking aside, it looks really good and uses up all those scraps. Well done.
Great feature wall! Also I love that stuff was getting pulled off with wild abandon like you don’t live in a country full of death beasts, I’d be a bit wary of the spiders behind my stuff here in the UK, and they’re softies 😂
Well I didn't want to share anyone, but you've uncovered my secret. This is actually my new breeding ground for redbacks, funnel webs and huntsman spiders. All the little nooks and crannies are perfect to house thousands of the critters to surprise my guests with 🤣
M8 that looks wicked. Am actually going be doing something similar just shortly in my shop. Can't believe you didnt use your custom pallets though!🏴👍
I wish I had a wood heater, but living in an apartment it'll have to wait unitl the next workshop ;) Vic from Downunder made a compressor for his sawdust and uses the DIY bricketts for the same thing!
It would if you forgot to put the drill bit in the jig 🤣 User error here, it didn't help the pallet slats were different thickesses but hey, we got there in the end! I've already given the wall to wifey... she wrote her name on it and everything! Im just gonna hold onto it for her for now 😅 Thanks for the challenge Phil, it's a great idea to reflect on how far we've all come.
Wow James! What a marathon ripper of a task! How long before you look at on particular piece of wood on that wall and know it would be just what you need for the project in hand? Thanks for the fun of this and the advice to check the length of the screws! Eryk. :-)
Great video mate, and really like how that wall turned out, it crazy to see how far we've came in making over a five year stretch, you have done some amazing things over the years and looking forward to seeing what you make next year
Cheers JB. I got the most lovely comment one one of my first videos today from a 65yo grandma whose husband passed away and she has recently been inspired to pick up his old tools and start learning to build things herself. She is using my channel and others like it to learn... most beautiful bloody comment I've ever gotten. Made the past 5 years of sharing content worth it :)
I had fun with the music in this one! I started down a rabbit hole when I edited in Phil at the start. His challenge Short had music in the background I couldn't edit out, so I asked him which YT studio track it was and synced the whole song at the start to his clip. I liked the vibe so much I then used 3 other tracks by the same artist, Jason Farnham :D
Very nice James ..i think i will be adding one of those in my shed when i eventually get it done loved the whole using up all those great scraps and very classy montage hey sorry to bust your chops mate but after the dust extraction video that im looking 4wrd to, i still would love u to do a kreg accu cut vs the ozito track saw as a affordable low budget sheet goods break down options thanx mate well done as always great build take care .
I honestly think that comparison is a brilliant idea mate, it is just I have to justify the $230 on a tool I don't need to get the Ozito track saw. Also, a peek behind the screen at the graffiti my wife put up on the wall... we are expecting our first child in a month so workshop time might be a _little_ squeezed in the near future ;) It is on my 'ideas' whiteboard, I'll see when I can squeeze it in :)
o wow congrats mate to u both that's awesome. thank u mate for it even making it a consideration for a future video in the mean time i think i will invest in a accu cut thanx again and you guys will be a great mum and dad @@FixitFingers
Ha! Loads. We've got a nice park and lots of big trees out the back of our building and many many feathered friends. If it is not them chiming in ruining my filming its the bloody leaf blowers.... I prefer the birds ;)
Not the CTS or jobsite versions as far as I'm aware, don't think tradies care that much 😂 All the proper sized SawStop saws have overhead as an option. Dusty going in next week 😊
Well, it is not going to be seen again (like the Bundy flag you miss treated...) and it is soft pine, so some 8g wood screws would have pulled it together quite nicely, 3mm pilots if you were worried about splitting. But again, soft pine. On the complete opposite side, the ideal for strength, and finish (if that was a consideration) a half lap would work well. Glue and a couple of piloted heavy grubs from the underside but that would obviously use half of your Saturday arvo. What do you reckon?
Half laps would have been my fallback too without the PH jig... I am glad you didn't say dominos 🤣 (I'll have one one day :P) Half laps take me much longer and with the ply skin would be waaay overkill for this job. I'm a fan of PH in the right places when they save time... just like a badly cut halflap, you still need to be careful to get your setup right or you end up like me here 😉
Bloody loved that Jimbo! Best back drop slash feature wall any shed can have. I want one! Ans it was a marathon 😉
Lot of hours in that one! Not done yet, Mario is helping me pimp it up next week!
I see the bed slats there in the background. I can never resist them on the side of the road either. 😂

And an example of how _not_ to use them all wrapped in one 🤣
Very true! All in all, looks mint mate!
Thats a mighty fine looking wall that! Having done something very similar with my pallet wood wall i can appreciate the time it took to make it! 👌
It takes a looooong time to make all those bits fit 😅 Worth it though 😊
Nice clean out of the scrap wood bins, and an excellent backdrop wall! Just needs that logo, looking forward to that video!
Luckily Mario has done all the hard work on the logo already with his CNC, 😁
@@FixitFingers It's good to have connections!

I do like your colourful wall! You are on the "to watch" list mate, I promise. So much content, so little time ;)
nice one buddy
Cheers Alex, both the build and edit were great fun. Plus, my workshop is now _almost_ scrap free :D
I really like how that came out. Nice one!
Cheers John. Adds a nice backdrop for filming too :D

I guessed the critical step. Miss pocket hole joinery altogether. Honest joinery works better.
What's your go to joinery for this sort of frame work Jack?
