Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how a group of voice actors playing DnD at home has morphed into a legit production company. Absolutely unreal.
My favorite part is that if you go back to Critical Role Season 1 Episode 1 the audio is... well, it's not great. Grainy, cuts in and out a good bit. Scratching noises. To this day when I tell someone to watch I say "Just bear with it, the audio gets better a few episodes in, don't worry". When I saw the boom mic setup halfway through this video, it just struck me.... man, how far they've come! Season 3 is going to be wild.
I was saying the other day that I wonder how often they sit down giggling that they are currently making a cartoon where they basically voice themselves, based on their dnd adventure. Must be so weird.

@Chaos1990 Just casually create a multidimensional traveling tavern that randomly opens it doors to people and brings stories alive, folks. It's the nerdier version of the Akashic records.

@@richardsmith1898 I'm a small dude but I also like being on the aisle or end seat. I just don't like having to ask others to move whenever I have to go to the bathroom.
Sam mentioning that Marisha is the youngest and then having her being emotional about the cast loving it so much, it made me tear up! She did a fantastic job!
I honestly can't wait to see who the new PCs will be, and what Classes they will be using. I, for one, would love to see someone playing an Artificer. Who knows? Maybe we'll even see some of the less used PC races like an Aarakocra, Tortle, or Tabaxi?
Yeah, I saw a video recently being like "CR isn't a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors they are a multimillion dollar business who are selling that idea to cater to nerds" and basically criticising CR for it's success because of the Twitch earnings leak. Like yeah they are a business, and they do have a level of tech, equipment and crew that almost all other DnD players can't manage but at the end of the day you can plainly see that these are people who'd still be playing without all this stuff and who have managed to make a business out of thier dreams, why wouldn't you'd support this, I'd kill to have my hobbies be not only my living but a damn successful one at that.
It just hits, hard, at the end of both campaigns so far when he allows himself to reflect on what's gone before for x years and sheds a few tears appreciating how much enjoyment he's brought to his friends
Calling dibs for the seats: Most of the cast: "I don't care, really." Laura: "I don't want to sit on an end." Travis: "I need to sit on an end." Mr and Mrs Laura Bailey, ladies and gents!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Marisha and everything she does? She has taken on so much responsibility with what happens behind the scenes and just kills it with every endeavor she sets her mind to.
Honestly if Travis was unable to fulfill his duties as CEO for whatever reason, Marisha would be the obvious choice to fill the role. She clearly has excellent management and organizational skills.
Dude I’m like fun video behind the scenes of the set yay! And now I’m really emotional so I don’t even know what’s going to happen when the episode itself launches.
Something I consistently love about CR is how the people behind the scenes get a shoutout. They didn’t just reveal the set and talk about the cool effects, they talked about how each person was brought in for their expertise and guidance, and even walked us through how they did it. It’s not often you see that, and it’s really sweet to see

Critical Role is what happens when a bunch of neardy friends become extremely financially successful with their nerdy ideas, then put that money right back into the business where is should be. I love these guys.
And this what so many people don't realize. So jaded are people with Corporate America that even the very thought of the Owners of a hugely successful, multi-million dollar business NOT pocketing said money, but, rather, re-investing that money back into the business itself is entirely unfathomable to them. Also, so jaded are people with Corporate America that, to them, when a small independent company makes it big, successful, and wealthy, all of a sudden they must now be sell outs and corrupt. In fact, I would go so far as to say their decision NOT to take a Salary is, probably, the reason they're still in business together. You can't fight over who gets a bigger piece of the pie when NOBODY gets a piece of the pie. The biggest downfall to Business Partner Friendships is money. Critical Role, smartly, removed money entirely from the equation. And to the jaded, the fact that they did that, again, is entirely unfathomable.
They’ve come a long way from their staticky mics and a tight sitting arrangement. Congrats you guys! No one is more deserving. We can’t wait to see it in action!
Gods thinking back to the horrific audio and them almost faceplanting trying to get in and out of those seats is wild. It's been an insane ride and I'm so glad their dreams came true.

Guys... They made a set, for Critical Role, in cooperation with a guy who designs theme parks for a living. This isn't a "Tavern of Tales" THIS IS CRITICAL ROLE LAND!
THIS. THIS is why Critical Role has so many supporters via twitch, youtube, etc. The extent that they go to create such ARTISTRY & BEAUTY to maximize the experience for not only us Critters but for the casts members & crew as well. I am SO EXCITED
There is a reason why Critical Role is the top earner on Twitch. People don't understand it's a full on production with multiple cast members, technicians and artisans working full time behind the scenes to produce a show of this high caliber. This new set will elevate the show to a whole new level never seen before, but these things cost money. I'm glad they're continuing to prerecord because that will allow for more artistic story telling opportunities like they did with Deadwood, too. Combined with multiple GMs and concurrent campaigns (possibly), the future looks bright for Critical Role and the Critters!
This - and people not understanding how much money goes into making high quality production... but it's on twitch and youtube...the days of that meaning it's just people with their webcams doing it all by themselves is long gone. They earn a lot of money cause they put on a good show and clearly that money is being pumped back into production and it looks amazing.
Also, they forget CR’s first merch: the T-Shirts. Before Marissa could even finish advertising them, one of their crew rushed to them and said “they’re sold out.” Or how about when they asked for 0.75M on Kickstarter for a single episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, and raised 3M on the first day.
People nowadays that earning lots of money doesn’t mean it just goes into your pocket. There’s a reason why we have two words for money making: Earned, and Profits.
okay, your comment ran wild in my mind and WHAT IF they have multiple games with different GMs and players but set in the same time and place and the players can swap between the games, visiting each other etc 😱I know it's not gonna happen but wow would that be epic!!
Yeah when I heard there was drama over how much money Critical Role was making from Twitch, I checked out the numbers and my first thought was “This seems about right. Did people not realize this is how much money Critical Role was likely pulling in from their main revenue source?”
I'm really hoping she's gonna play a really "loud" and in your face Bard. Both Pike and Yasha were very... quiet ? demure. Stoic. And I'd love to see her more energetic and flashy :D

Just aside from the impressiveness of the set, take a moment to appreciate the woman who organized it all. Marisha has come such a long way from Batgirl Spoiled. Can't wait for the new campaign.

A 8th level conjuration spell (there are 8 main cast members) that summons a magnificent tavern that can feed and house any and all who walk in its doors. By spending a long rest here you gain the benefits of the hero's feast spell and all status ailments that can be cured using any other spell (except those that require wish or a 9th level casting of a spell) are healed after the rest. There is also a fully stocked bar with endless alchohol from any kind of alcohol that the caster has had before. This tavern is also magically protected and no harm can come to those that enter it unless the individual agrees to it. When 24 hours have elapsed the bar keep, who always has a hood obscuring his face, thanks you for your patronage and you are removed from the tavern before the door behind you closes. This spell requires a 20 sided die worth 2000 gold to be cast and is used on casting. Casting time of 1 minute. Can not be cast again until the Thursday night after this spell was cast.
marisha's elbows : *Eldritch too-many-eyes-for-elbows noises* the idea of her elbows with a bunch of Cthulu eyes popped into my mind reading your post. is this how you get and great old one patron?
Think the home game part had been going on for a few years before Felicia asked if they would do the show on G&S's Twitch channel so it's closer to ten I think!
One of my favourite takeaways from this video was pausing on one of the concept art pages and realising that THE SET HAS IT'S OWN BACKSTORY. Tavern of Tales sounds like such an epic thing.
Seeing them actually hugging and coming into physical contact with each other again actually broke me. I can’t wait to start this journey with them all. Is it Thursday yet?
Edit: Don't get me wrong, I love having them back together, I'm just very anxious about them not continuing to social distance for awhile longer, regardless if it's just their personal choice or not. With Delta raging and even killing folks that are vaccinated, I'm still very cautious and nervous that so many people act like "you know what" is totally over, though :( I'm trying to get used to people not taking as many precautions, but I don't know how people are so comfortable with it, I barely was talked into eating outside at a restaurant for my birthday and only ate inside for the first time like a week ago lol. I'm trying to be understanding about it, but I can't help but think a lot of my fellow liberals that are vaccinated aren't quite so understanding about others make personal choices we don't agree with... granted, just not getting vaccinated at all or making conspiracy theories about vaccines is on another level lol.
"I'm of the mind to 'let them fight'" Matt says. I feel like whoever sits next to marisha is going to learn that personally lol. But also holy crap this is a dm's wet dream looking at all this

What I've realized is that they eventually sat in a way where characters who knew each other beforehand generally sit far from each other. Like, Ashton and F.C.G., Laudna and Imogen, even Fearne, Orym and Dorian sit at least one person apart from each other. I don't know if this was intentional, but it enforces conversations across the table, since those who are most likely to talk to each other sit on opposite sides.
also in terms of getting your eyes accross the screen and following physically a conversation and noting what all of them are doing. Even if its purely subconscious.
@@lucascova7875 Well, first of all, you're wrong. The video even shows them sitting at the table, and sitting alongside two sides of it. So they do talk across the table. Secondly, I consider everyone not directly next to someone as "across the table". It doesn't really matter if you're separated by a piece of wood, or other people, the point is that conversations aren't happening inside tiny 'friend-bubbles' but over larger distances. And lastly, even if we only consider people sitting on different sides of the table as being "across", my point still stands pretty nicely. Laudna and Imogen are sitting at different sides of the table, so does FCG and Ashton and, to a degree, the trio of Orym, Fearne and Dorian, Dorian sitting at a different side from the other two. But here, let me rephrase it, so the point becomes clearer to you: The cast is sat at a table in a way that characters who knew each other beforehand do not sit next to each other, and generally sit at different sides of the table. That good?
Critical Role, as a creative and business team, mesh together so well. Marisha has such a GIFT for production, I can't even. I'm so goddamn proud of her and the rest of CR.
She did an austonding job! At least from what I could see from the video. Very much looking forward to seeing how it all comes together, absolute congrats marrisha😆
"and when we realized we were sitting at the same table, we reached out and touched each other's hands.." WHY AM I CRYING. God I missed watching them interact closely like this. Marisha, you fucking goddess you. Thank you for this beautiful gift.
Oh Marisha, you’ve done SUCH a good job! Really happy to see everyone appreciating her in this video. (Also, I kinda want to do set design now, dang. This is so cool!)
If you find the right program, you'll not only learn the computer aspects but the manual, carpentry aspects as well which will help you SO much in daily life. - a recent grad for set design/production
Being a creative person myself I find this deeply inspiring. Liam mentions that they're fortunate enough to be able to have full control over their own creation, but that isn't just luck. I know of few creators who take their work and creation so seriously, whilst maintaining such a wonderful, colorful and happy vibe. The work that Marisha and the teams contracted have done to create the ultimate tool for their own creative work is completely astounding to me! This set and (more importantly) what it represents moves me greatly. To have watched these guys have fun together and grow that into a business over the past years and to see them achieve something like this. A fantastic and invested production team that creates content of such a high value so consistently is such a leap up from where Critical Role started and I feel so proud of you. It feels like I've seen my best friends achieve their dreams and you've done it in such a glorious way! I've watched this (and cried) three times already. You guys are awesome. Heed the word of Travis and fucking celebrate. If anyone deserves it it's you. All the love!
I loved the dream sequence of Yasha and the storm lord where she fought the elementals played by the other players. I thought she was in over her head (both Ash and Yash) but she pulled it off nicely! A moment of true growth.
And now you all understand why Critical Role needs to make money if they are going to continue to tell engaging and visually appealing tales. This shit don't come cheap. After hauling equipment and seeing the insurance papers backed behind the equipment, I would not be surprised if this set up cost around $1 million, if not more.
but then you ask, "Was the set not good enough before? Shouldn't the fact that these friends are in the same room playing a fun game be enough? Why do they think that we need a new set to be excited for the new characters, setting, lore and story? Don't the important parts have nothing to do with the table the game is played on?"
@@ZttackFrmBhind As someone who runs a game store and plays D&D, nah. That never crossed my mind. I'm always looking for better ways to make my passion for games and minis more appealing to people.
@@ZttackFrmBhind I don't have this mindset. I like nice maps and even better 3D models. I love creating minis of my characters. I have a nice dice tower and trays to roll my nice dice in. I think most of us critters are always looking to find a way to have more fun at the table. Being that critical role is a form of entertainment why not try and make the experience even more enjoyable for the players and the fans? Sure the most important part will always be the roleplaying aspect amongst a group of friends. That is why they are so popular more than anything else. But why be satisfied when you can do even better? If you were Matt and had this crazy dream and you could now make the dream come true wouldn't you? It reminds me when people ask me, "Why do you need 2 60inch TV's in your living room?" It's not a matter of need its a desire or want. I can watch 2 sporting events at the same time. I can play a video game while listening/watching golf or a baseball game. Or I can have a friend come over and we can play games on both tv's at the same time. It's a luxury and fun and if you can afford it and want it why not do it if it makes you happy?
@@Fairburne69 All of what you say is true, and I don't fault them for wanting a new set, it kinda makes me sad that they got rid of the table they were gifted by Wyrmwood but that might just be sentimental me :) It just feels like there is a lot of time spend on the set and none on the Campaign that we're all looking forward to. Except for the ominous "Throw out your expectations". Which in and of itself makes me afraid that it won't be the CR that I've loved and watched for the last 6 years
@@ZttackFrmBhind I can understand the sentiment. There is a small part of me that misses the originals. When the tables were crap the maps were crap the audio was crap and the video was crap. Seems crazy right? Those early episodes were so much fun. At the time it was a unique experience for me. I have fond memories of the early days of campaign 1. Having said that I don't want them to go back. I prefer for them to keep pushing the boundaries of what can be done. As long as they don't lose the soul of the show. Just let Matt tell the story and let his players live in that world. That's what I want more than anything and what I'm most looking forward to.
As a friendly reminder this game started at a home, then moved to what was effectively an office room/meeting room in geek and sundry, then moved to a tiny cramped set nearby where they filmed shows like tabletop with Wil Wheaton, and eventually evolved into what critical role is today. I've got nothing but praise and congratulations to the cast and especially the unsung heroes, the set designers and crew, of critical role thank you all so much for making the show happen and bringing us endless joy.
Marisha tearing up at everyone's reactions is like the perfect mirror to Matt at the last episode of C2. She really is inspiring with how hard she works. This sounds like the D20 dome on steroids! Also them touching finger tips and hugging should be like a full 10 minute video, 5 at least.
I'm an interaction designer trying to become an experiential designer and just sitting over here crying before they even get to the "emotional part" because this is literally everything I want to be a part of. This is beyond words spectacular, Marisha is a serious champion
The sheer amount of immersion that Matt will be able to bring to the players and us with this set up, is going to drive this campaign. First it was the music, then the battle maps with a little bit of ambiance. NOW, this is just insane!
The Tavern Of Tales "A magical tavern that attracts a great many adventurers and travelers. Matt is living the life I would love to be living.
Couldn’t of said it better❤️ as much as the cast is as well, she really is the soul behind everything and she does a lot more that people don’t necessarily see because its behind the scenes
I'm surprised the "Where we're sitting" part didn't end with them cutting back to Liam like, "Oh yeah I'm gonna avoid sitting next to Marisha for my safety. And any other monks too." lmao
I'm pretty sure she's very much a little sister to him. I think he'd tolerate anything and still adore her. It reminds me of when I was little and my cousin first introduced me to pokemon on his gameboy and I saved over his game file. He was like "You saved?" "Yeah." "Oh, okay." he didn't even explain I had ruined his game because he didn't want me to feel bad. I didn't understand the gravity of what I had done until years later when I got my own gameboy.
I think deep down he secretly loved those moments. They're endearing and make for some great laughs. After the forced time apart, I think that would be exactly what he'd want to get back to.
My reaction when i was watching an episode of campaign 3, and i realized that the windows in the background weren't real as the rain suddenly started pouring down with matts wonderful storytelling was just magical

You can just tell he's such a good-hearted person, who wants to share happiness and joy with everyone around him. Especially his loved ones
Right?! It's been clear for a long time that he is truly a softy underneath his ruthless DM exterior. 😊
The transition from Kraghammer in a cramped child’s bedroom to now is just unreal. I’m so happy to see our nerdy bunch of voice actors flourish

@@CrisSelene and how much do you even see the set during an episode
Before Marissa could even finish advertising them, one of their crew rushed to them and said “they’re sold out.”
Or how about when they asked for 0.75M on Kickstarter for a single episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, and raised 3M on the first day.
People nowadays that earning lots of money doesn’t mean it just goes into your pocket. There’s a reason why we have two words for money making: Earned, and Profits.

"The whole is more than the sum of its parts" has never been more true than with Critical Role.
There is no across the table in this set, everyone except Matt sits in a line

We really did not get to see the whole set. Disappointed but can’t wait for Thursday yet!
My mind goes to the Cinderbrush one-shot when Matt turned the set into a nightclub, that was also intense. I can’t wait to see what Matt can think of
And now you all understand why Critical Role needs to make money if they are going to continue to tell engaging and visually appealing tales.
@@Fairburne69 All of what you say is true, and I don't fault them for wanting a new set, it kinda makes me sad that they got rid of the table they were gifted by Wyrmwood but that might just be sentimental me :)
It just feels like there is a lot of time spend on the set and none on the Campaign that we're all looking forward to.
She is a damn queen! Critical Role wouldn’t be the same without that badass in charge!
It was so touching! So excited for Thursday!
'Marisha is the youngest among us, and now also the most mature among us,"
This made me feel things I wasn't aware I could feel
This blew me away. I had no idea she was the youngest she acts with so much confidence and power. One day I hope to be half the woman she is.
@@sarahfuller6113 She turned 30(!) during the first year of CR2, I think. They celebrated during the episode.
@@nousvivons I do remember them celebrating, just never announcing her age. Still amazes me
Amogus
@@sarahfuller6113 I remember Sam making a joke about how they were both now in their 30s.
Bruv there will literally be projections behind them to emulate the enviroments! That is fucking insane!
The Tavern Of Tales
"A magical tavern that attracts a great many adventurers and travelers. It is best known for its magical properties that make any stories and tales told within its walls come alive through illusions. The Tavern is also known to magically transport to different locations or have its door appear before weary travelers. Food, Drink, and even a night's stay is paid for with a unique and thrilling tale instead of coin."
I think we may have just found Matt's next Campaign Book.
SO cool. I smiled big at this.
@@adamwhite3048 it's just a transcription taken from the description on the concept sketch seen at 2:32.
Oh ma ❤️!
@@coasterjudge right, thanks for transcribing it :)
I'm just sitting here crying it's so beautiful. I'm so proud of Marisha, she's accomplished so much, she really is incredible.
I'm crying too!!! I'm so happy and proud of them all
Thank you! I too just cried and cried. I couldn’t even hear half of it. It’s Mercer’s Globe Theatre
He's got a couple stream decks behind the DM Screen - that's going to be amazing. Click RAIN, projectors start video of rain, random lightning lighting effects and/or video effects, rain sound effects, droning music. This is going to be so cool. They're living the dream. Matt is living the life I would love to be living.
Marisha is never truly given her due and as fans of this show, we need to do this! She deserves it!
Couldn’t of said it better❤️ as much as the cast is as well, she really is the soul behind everything and she does a lot more that people don’t necessarily see because its behind the scenes
Well, maybe in Campaign 3 she manages to play a character that is not annoying as hell. :P ;)
@@harmless6813 Imagine being that hateful for no reason.
@@harmless6813 Dude, not necessary to hate on her characters in a comment praising Marisha for her hard work.
@@Silva-ek9hd Twitch chat is leaking.
Matt menacingly, "Let them fight." IM CRYING
Let his dm slip out a bit 😂
He knows where he gets to sit, so no sweat for him 🤷♂️
@@BigDaddyGAO he is also going to enjoy it if there is chaos picking seats
Remember when they used to played on cosco tables, used laser pointers, and kept bumping into the backdrops?
All the critters are so proud of you, Marisha!
And the most thematic thing on set was "remember HUNTER'S MARK" scrawled on the chalk board behind Orion
I mean im assuming they will still use laser pointers on occasion
I feel at this point this is an exercise in exploring what the logical extreme to "the best D&D game possible" is, AND I AM HERE FOR IT.
Corridor digital put out a vid claiming to be the best dnd game ever (havent seen it yet, cant confirm) but like... seeing this set, knowing how good the cr cast is, and specifically how good of a storyteller matt is... makes me kinda doubt their claim lol
@@Variocom it's good, but they admitted they were just playing to the RUclips game with that title.
A few years ago this was just a few friends sitting in dining room table with hand drawn paper maps. How far they have come, we are so happy and proud for you guys.
I can already tell this next campaign is gonna be nuts. Everyone in the CR cast is incredible in their own way, but let's just take a second to appreciate how much of a badass Marisha is.
Okay kids, let's say it all together: "Thank you Marisha Ray, the best creative director ever"!
She greatvat all that yet so terrible at role-playing her characters
@@tbone1309 you just don't like the characters, not how she's roleplaying them.
@@tbone1309 I mean can one be terrible at playing things that THEY created?! Can you do that "wrong"?!
@@tbone1309 She plays strong female leads and plays them rather well. But women with strength scares you so keep hiding.
@@tbone1309 Yeah. A bit like how you have greatvat opinions yet so terrible at forming sentences.
The whole set is gorgeous, yes, but why is nobody talking about Sam’s shirt? It’s pure elegance.
Plus deodorant! Lol
Ashley's shirt at 6:55 with the rainbow unicorns!? Do we think this was a play test? or maybe, just maybe, them filming Episode 1??? Ashley is playing a unicorn confirmed. lol
Ashley hugging Marisha is everything. (That's exactly the best way to hug. With love! Not uneasy anxiety.)
Looking forward to the next generation of slang hoping that it's less hyperbolic.
Taking a game I was literally raised on, my father actually reading the monster manual to bed for me when I was younger, now to a game that is fawned over across the whole world!
This is what's great about the game. Not just these beautiful voice actors, although they played a massive part, but truly the world's greatest roleplaying game!
Massive props to Marisha and Travis for building an incredible team. The passion and love going into the set is incredible. I'm excited for what you guys will continue to create.
Yes!! I can't wait for season 3! Woooot!
Hmm, both a Captain and man of culture I see.
This campaign should be cool! Hope you enjoy it Shack.
Yooooo Captain Shack
Always gotta love when Captain Shack is on the scene
I am also hyped captain. Will watch your newest Captain's Log Soon too. :D
you !!!! a surprise but a welcome one to be sure
Started to tear up when they. were talking about how much it meant to them. And then watching Marisha tear up too, major tear jerker ugh!
Just rewatched this. I had tears in my eyes as well Marisha. Chapeau.
"We're creators in charge of our own creation." This is why CR is so special.
" So much effort has been put into something that seems so effortless. "
This hit different
That's the definition of excellence.
love the little sneak peak at 5:11 showing matt still uses a classic dm screen.
Seeing Ashley and Marisha hugging at the table hit harder then I expected :’)
i am so beyond thrilled to see what the cast has in store for us considering all the work they've put in, is it thursday yet??
Almost, my friend. Almost.
Technically for me it's tomorrow but I know it's not for y'all.

I can’t even get a group to meet consistently and y’all have this 😭 for real though, y’all deserve it. Truly a dream setup and an amazing stage for the performance y’all provide every week
Remembering where this all started to now makes me so blessed and glad to have seen this team grow and succeed. Marisha Ray is such a hard working and incredible creative director.

I am so excited for campaign 3. These guys deserve EVERYTHING they’ve built for themselves. The amount of joy and love they share with each other and all their critters is just beautiful
I’m excited for the projectors!!! They provide such cool atmosphere! Especially when it came to Taliesin session
Me too... Even though as an elder God, Taliesin could have just summoned rain in the old studio
