    A few points.
    1) Moon has the same composition as Earth.

    It won't happen like that. As soon as the moon will enter the Roche Limit of the earth, (which is around 9492 km from the center of the earth to the center of the moon) The moon will be torn apart into tiny pieces and form a ring system around the planet. Also, causing sea/ocean waves to rise 1-2 meters higher than they normally should, Flooding vulnerable sea coasts.

    Earth is not unique in any way, in a universe with over 100.000.000 Quintilion planets, it's impossible for earth to be the only rocky planet that supports life

    • @MrBiggins9999
      @MrBiggins9999 7 лет назад +14

      Unless there is a planet out there *exactly* the same as Earth, then Earth is unique. For example the formations of land and the lifeforms we have on the planet are unique.

      @MrBiggins9999 7 лет назад +8

      Just waiting for a mate Earth can only have an unique shape of the continents, and perhaps flora/fauna and/or humans

    • @johncronin9540
      @johncronin9540 7 лет назад +5

      zyx senpai Right now, we do not have anywhere near enough information to make such a determination. I think microbial life is probably quite common, and may yet be discovered beneath the surface of Mars, or under the ice of Europa.
      But consider this. Earth may be unique in having such a large Moon in orbit. One effect is the tidal effect, which may have been vital in the origin of life. The Moon also keeps the Earth's axis of rotation fairly stable, resulting in relatively stable climate conditions. Because of the impact that created the Moon, Earth has a larger iron core, which generates a magnetic field that shields Earth from some solar effects.
      Yet even with all that, consider this. There has been life on Earth for at least 4 billion years. Yet complex life (multicellular) has only been around for 500 million years. A much smaller period of time. Sentient life has only arisen quite late.
      It was once thought that Venus once harbored life -- it is in many respects a twin of Earth. (They are almost identical in terms of size and mass). Yet there is no possible way life on Earth could survive there. The pressure of the atmosphere is crushing, and it is the warmest terrestrial planet, hot enough to melt lead.
      We are only now discovering exoplanets, and we have yet to develop the technology to observe them directly. When the day arrives when we are able to do spectral analysis to determine the composition of their atmospheres, what scientists will be looking for is a planet with an atmosphere with a significant amount of oxygen molecules present. Such an atmosphere can only be created by life. It's how our atmosphere came to have oxygen in it (which it didn't originally have. Cyanobacteria was responsible, and we owe our existence to them.)
      So that is what astronomers will be looking for. But first, we need to figure out a way to directly observe those planets. Their reflective light is overpowered by their parent stars.

    • @DANGJOS
      @DANGJOS 7 лет назад +2

      TheDominatorPlayzYT Well I'm not entirely sure what it would actually be, but I actually did a very rough calculation. I assumed the entire Earth was made of iron and that the moon went from 230,000 miles away to 4,000 miles at impact. I converted the gravitational potential energy into 100% heat and used 25 J/mol/K of iron to get about a 4 million (I think) degree increase in Kelvin. Now I totally ignored heat of vaporization and heat of fusion and a bunch of other factors so I just through out hundreds of thousands of degrees. Don't forget that the moon is HUGE and it would ram into the Earth at around 400,000 miles per hour, or 120 miles/second! That is an immense amount of kinetic energy so I think people here are seriously underestimating how devastating this collision would be. There is no way that this energy wouldn't be at least capable of melting the whole Earth, especially when a good portion of the Earth is already molten

    • @marvinkitfox3386
      @marvinkitfox3386 7 лет назад

      "would ram into the Earth at around 400,000 miles per hour, or 120 miles/second! "
      You are not very good at physics, are you?
      Earth escape velocity is 11.2km/s
      You can drop something from an infinite height, and 11.2km/s is the fastest it would hit, assuming it started from a standstill.
      Still, the original point is valid.
      The kinetic energy of the impact, if actually applied to the whole planet+moon evenly, would heat it by some 1600K
      And while a big chunk of that energy would be lost to space via radiation, high-energy ejecta, etc... You would still be putting enough energy into the planet to make it red-hot.
      Not to mention the several-kilometer-high rock tsunami that would circle the globe, repeatedly.
      a bad, BAD day for life on earth.

    • @johncronin9540
      @johncronin9540 7 лет назад +27

      zAllex Music Yes, and the Earth's gravity (more precisely the tidal forces) would also not just pull on the nearer part of the Moon, it would tear the Moon apart. Not that this would spare life on Earth; the kinetic energy would melt the entire surface of the Earth. (It would be a good weekend to be away from the planet) -- and though nobody would be around to see it, the Earth would have a ring.
      This actually IS eventually going to happen to Mars. Mars has two, tiny (not even massive enough to be spherical) moons, Phobos and Deimos. One of them, I forget which, is in an unstable orbit, and someday (none of us will be around to see it), it will get too close, and be torn apart by Mars' tidal effect. Someday, Mars will be a ringed planet.
      Our moon, on the other hand, is actually slowly (VERY slowly) receding from the Earth. As it gets more distant, that rate of recession slows. The Moon is getting this energy because its tidal effect is very slowly slowing the rotation of the Earth.

    If anyone asks why the moon isint crashing into Earth right now, it technically is falling to the Earth, just not how you expect. As each body mass of the planet (and technical asteroid) controls its gravity, the moon is falling AROUND the Earth instead of falling into it. In fact the moon is actually getting FARTHER from Earth so you don't have to worry about it slamming into Earth! Translation to that: No slammy Earthy, we safey!

    So, if the moon falls to the Earth, it would fall at about 10 km/s. The moon is about 3,400 km in diameter so it would take almost 6 minutes from touch to full impact. the ripples would move about the speed of sound, through rock maybe 1 km/s, so the destruction would spread out from that vantage point, pretty slowly. That's a pretty good depiction overall. I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe a bit more splash back up after impact.

    The Moon is gradually receding from the Earth, at a rate of about 4 cm per year. This is caused by a transfer of Earth's rotational momentum to the Moon's orbital momentum as tidal friction slows the Earth's rotation. That increasing distance means a longer orbital period, or month, as well.

      Marvin Parker Another Moon! This happened a few billion years ago. A planet the size of Mars hit us and the remnants compacted together to create our moon. But of course if that happened now we all would die.

    Very cool ! I dig the what if scenarios. I wonder what became of the water? I don't think that water would be stripped of its two hydrogen atoms or anything as such. Is there enough water to extinguish the planetary fire storm? It's still pretty cool. Thanks for putting this out there,

    I have seen a more scientific animation of what would happen if an object with a diameter of 500 km would hit the planet.
    It was clearly worse as shown here. The complete surface and atmosphere of the earth became a fire mass worse than is shown here (also on the opposite side of the planet was totally in the fire).
    But the moon is even 3476 km in diameter, so i guess that the damage would be very much bigger than shown here.
    Actually I don't believe that so much traces of the continents would be left. I think the Earth and Moon could be partially ripped apart, at least removing the Earths crust for a large part and with much more debris flying into space.
    But I know that these things also depend on impact velocity.

    • @unpopularopinionguy8480
      @unpopularopinionguy8480 6 лет назад

      Eduard
      Exactly, the moon here wasn't projected against earth, it simply "fell down", it wasn't that fast.
      I still believe it would be much more devastating.
