I first saw Chicago Transit Authority in May ‘70 in Langhorne PA at Neshaminy High School in the GYM. No stage I was right in front of Terry Kath and his long hair waving in front of his face as his guitar soared. I was so blown away I went and formed my own 8pc horn band 😎🙏♥️👍
Thank you for this excellent video. We were so lucky to have Terry while we did, and to be able to experience and appreciate his great talents to this day. Your videos are also now able to be seen by the next generation who I’m sure are blown away by Terry as we were. So Thank you very much for sharing. God bless you, Frank
What's really amazing, is that this was recorded in the late 60's and Terry was playing like that. Moreover, that was a studio recording, and he held nothing back. I was fortunate enough to see Terry with Chicago a half a dozen times between 1974 and 1977; one time 11 rows straight in front of Terry. I bought that seat for $25.00 from a scalper. Those were the days: )
Terry Kath is a one of a kind guitar player that doesn't get enough credit . Maybe because of the way his life ended I don't know . In my book he's one of the best in rock and roll history .
Having Jimi say he was the only dude better than him is pretty good recognition. Of course, he won't be remembered over Eddie, SRV, in public opinion. But the musicians knew his rep.
Terry...undeniable the gift he had. Cetera.....undeniable the gift he had.....both have never received the respect and recognition they deserve!!! Drummer aint too shabby either....keepin' it rock steady. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely. At that time period, they had very few equal's. Terry gave Hendrix a run for his money. Cetera was one of but a very few bassist's with such pure talent on bass. His picking style was so clean and tight. Live or Studio. They were great. So underrated. The loss of Terry hit him harder than maybe was realized.
Yes! Totally agree, the whole album kicks ass and introduced to the world Terry Kath's monster guitar playing. No wonder Hendrix was a fan. Too bad they later turned into PETER CETERA AND HIS BALLADEERS.....
One of the greatest most creative first albums ever. Cetera was really an incredible , rhythmic, tasty bass player ! Seraphine fantastic with those drum fills. Kath my God ; one of the most under rated - totally insane versatile ; making that Guitar talk ! Wow ! 😎
Hey was fantastic, saw him in 76at the Nassau coleseam in uniondale n.y with kathy Lapp my high school love.and my sister Carol and brother in law paul ciavolella.2nd row seats had to sleep outside the place the night before to get those great seats.Chicago transcends all musical bands with there avid continuaty.RIP Terry.
Terry was able to use the wah-wah pedal better than any other guitarist, including Hendrix. I saw him play twice in Pittsburgh. At those two shows he used a white Fender Stratocaster with rosewood fretboard and a Les Paul Gibson with low impedance pick-ups. His playing was very powerful.
I love this man's guitar playing I remember seeing him with Chicago at the Hammersmith Odeon in London UK RIP Terry you were one of the greats. Your music had stayed with me since the late sixties .
He was the soul and danny was the heart. For his time unquestionably the best. Jimi said so. Cetera was ahead of his time also. Multi-talented, sing, write, compose and could get more sound of a guitar than anyone.
Had a chance to see CTA way back when in L.A. especially at the Whisky. Absolutely amazing. Terry carried the whole band with his powerful voice and brilliant guitar playing. Big influence on me growing up as a guitarist. God bless Terry.
Unfortunately, the 'ballad' thing was 'forced' upon them... Though 'If You Leave Me Now' won a Grammy for them, it was also their 'Kiss of Death' as the less musically educated (re Chicago's history) masses, AND the record execs, demanded 'More of the Same' and though their 'roots' and 'hearts' were in their rock and horn-rock origins, they were (by their own admission) of financial and career sustaining need, required to 'crank up the ballad machine'. Reminds me of someone that is really good at something that they DON'T necessarily enjoy, but required by their company, boss, etc to CONTINUE to pursue if they want to remain gainfully employed!
Absolutely , I was always disgusted how Kath played so many styles including rhythm ; & never even being mention. Listen to CTA -I - II V- VI- VII Incredible music , 70's decade was the most creative ever for music !
Fortunate to see them live from 72-77 years 12 times including 2 nights in a row in Kansas . They always played Make Me Smile Last song before taking a break first half of the concert. Kath that voice & guitar playing of Jimmy Pankow's symphonic masterpiece absolutely incredible.!🎸🙋♂️
If you are not familiar with TK awesome ability, listen to the 2-3 hour guitar 🎸 solo on 25 or 6 to 4. The Tanglewood concert in ‘70 was absolutely amazing!!!
What an incredible mix of music ! Chicago early years CTA ; these men would've won any Rock N Roll contest. So damm creative & talented ! One of a kind album .... Masterpiece ..🙋♂️
Chicago was the 'House Band' at 'The Whiskey A Go-Go' in L.A. when I was growing up there from 63-74. Unfortunately, I was under 21 (in High School) and unable to get in. Kath is my all-time favorite guitarist, though I have many on my personal list that I wish I was qualified to even tune their instruments! I had just turned 25 less than 3 months earlier, when I arose to see the headlines on the front page of our local paper that Kath had died via an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound. I was DEVASTATED and having just turned 64, his loss still ranks as one of the most emotionally painful events in my lifetime! Chicago was NEVER the same, and even though my wife and I got to see them 3 months ago (and they did put on a FABULOUS concert), the 'Chicago' I knew from CTA (Chicago I) to Kath's finally album with them (Chicago XI) 'died' that horrible day in January of '79. He is genuinely missed!!
I was born Jan. 31 1955... We had the same birthdays. I'm always reminded of him on my birthday. And being a drummer percussionist being influenced strongly by this great band his death marked the day the music died as we knew them that day.
Hendrix was a very humble guy...also in saying that Terry was better than him. Truth of the matter is, there were none better than Jimi. Terry was great as well and I love them both.
He didn't get the recognition he deserted because he wasn't a fucking Englishman.everybody was focused on English guitar players and bands.one of the most mad underrated guitarists.
I hope Chicago knows just how lucky they were to have Terry Kath with them. For me, he was the shining light in the band. When they started to drift away from rock towards being a pop band, I was disappointed. I regret never having seen them in concert with Terry. By the time I finally got to see them, Terry had passed and Pete had just left the band. At least I got to see them with Danny still on drums. They were touring with The Beach Boys that year.
TERRY KATH was the band CHICAGO's connection with rock and roll- if no TERRY KATH they really were a jazz group- P.S. all players were good in that band - and still are -
Kath Is The Master!
Your welcome. Terry was awesome and I thought this one (Liberation) was a great example of the bands jammin' chops along with showcasing Danny and, Peter.
not really a fan of “trumpet playing band” but chicago rocked with guitar, horns, keyboard and 3 vocalists. talk about rhythms, power, unequalled in white music. earth, wind and fire, beautiful musicians, all and so many others.
Too many people don't know this side of Chicago - many just know of them from the 'power ballads' they started doing later on. This is a perfect showcase of Terry's outrageous guitar skills, and Peter had some serious bass chops. I always thought that with Danny Seraphine on drums, what an incredible 'power trio' these guys could've been - and double-threat vocals, to boot!
Bullshit. Anyone who's listened to enough radio through the years including main stream radio should be just as familiar with their early as well as later stuff since it was also hit material so shut up with that.
First time I hear this from Chicago? Spacing me out without touching a doobie. Got so used to “Make me smile” & “Wake Up sunshine” that this sounds hard & rough to be the Chicago Of The White cover album. This is great material! ✌️
I need to say this...I believe Terry Kath would still be alive if he would have left Chicago in the mid 70s! Before they started leaning towards that Peter Cetera ballad era. He needed to leave & start another band with guitar, bass, drums & maybe a piano/organ & get back to his rockin blues! With his vocals & guitar leading the way! What a sad & tragic end to one of the greats & one my favorites!!!
That was a possibility, or perhaps should have been. The band put themselves in a tough spot, by dumping their producer over money! Shot themselves in the foot.
The only time Chicago EVER truly "Rocked" was when Terry was singing and playing guitar and when Peter Cetera was still a real bass player. I stopped listening to anything Chicago or Cetera did after Terry Died. Drums, horns, vocals were phenomenal. Terry as a soloist had so many great players surrounding him and idea;'s and creativity just flowed through him. What a loss. When I was 14 I first heard Chicago Transit Authority. I was floored. It changed me forever.
I've been listening to Chicago since 1971. In that time I've never heard another guitar player that comes anywhere near Kath. It's sad that he's rarely mentioned in a list of the best guitar players. Everyone still thinks that Hendrix was the best, or some tart pops up with Eddie Van Halen...laughable. Not to mention his incredible soulful voice. The mixture was magical. We're lucky to have had him here for a short time. A true blessing would be to have him with us still. I still get tearful listening to the old Chicago music. Terry and my own big brother died the same year, both way too young. I'm fortunate to own a copy of The Innovative Guitar of Terry Kath. Pick up a copy or buy it digitally if available.
It is popular to say Chicago died along with Kath.I have been listening to and loving their music since the beginning.I feel the band started their slippery slope to irrelevance after Chicago V.Thereafter they lost their edge even Kath
Meant to add that the group lost their edge even with Kath. The truth is Bobby Lamm carried the group on his back from the beginning.Kath’s death was just the final nail in the coffin.
Yea! The black CTA album, at the record stand in 1969, among all the others, that you would see at that time? Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Pink Floyd (all progrock) Was the pinnacle of rock music at that period! (Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Cream, being blues?)
Terry Kath.gotta love it. I was fortunate enough to do a remix of Make me Smile using publicly available raw stems. best song i ever got to mix, hands down.
Really Miss Terry's Genius Guitar Playing & Soulful Voice. 🙏
God Bless.💗🙌
The original 7 were unbelievable. Just phenomenal talent. Terry had a gift not duplicated to this day.
Terry Kath one of a kind. Saw them 3 times in the 70s in Seattle, Washington before Terry passed away. Great concerts ❤❤❤
None other like this dude. To this day I've never heard better!!!!!! Goooooo TK.
Thank you for this excellent video. We were so lucky to have Terry while we did, and to be able to experience and appreciate his great talents to this day. Chicago featuring Terry Kath and Peter Cetera have never been bettered. Nothing has even come close.
Terry was in a class of his own! Chicago's best lead guitarist an front man by far !
CTA was, for me, the best, most creative music I have ever heard, and still do in 2020.
Terry Kath is a one of a kind guitar player that doesn't get enough credit . Maybe because of the way his life ended I don't know . In my book he's one of the best in rock and roll history .
Too bad we didn't get another 10 years.
Of course!👍
Having Jimi say he was the only dude better than him is pretty good recognition. Of course, he won't be remembered over Eddie, SRV, in public opinion. But the musicians knew his rep.
WHO KNOW BETTER THAN OTHER MUSIICIANS ?
I know Jimmy Hendrix said he was a better guitar player than he was 🎸🎸🎸🎺🎷
The man is a legend.
Flat out terry kath was the best, got to see him , 1972 thru 1977 rip miss you
Had he lived Terry would have been an incredible force
Hell of a jam....with my morning coffee, and a telecaster!!! Thanks!
Chicago could play anybody off the stage....period.
Terry Kath should be included in any list of the best lead guitarists of all time.
To me their first three albums stand out as works of seven professional musicians putting their all into their craft.
Terry Kath was Chicago !!
Terry...undeniable the gift he had. Cetera.....undeniable the gift he had.....both have never received the respect and recognition they deserve!!! Drummer aint too shabby either....keepin' it rock steady. Thanks for posting.
truer words never spoken.
or not spoken of enough.
Kath = Genius. He and Cetera were nuclear together!
Add Danny Seraphine and they would have made one hell of a power trio.
Excellent! Terry was the best and Chicago was their best with the original seven.
Ditto to that Sharon
Got my vote Sharon. I saw them 1971 in Adelaide South Australia ... I'm 74 now & that night is burned into my brain. My daughter is green with envy!
Always said the CTA album was one of the best rock albums ever... this is why.
Yes! Totally agree, the whole album kicks ass and introduced to the world Terry Kath's monster guitar playing. No wonder Hendrix was a fan. Too bad they later turned into PETER CETERA AND HIS BALLADEERS.....
@@rickleblanc8900 I don't disagree with you, but remember that Terry Kath sang lead on the ballad "Colour My World."
One of the greatest most creative first albums ever.
Cetera was really an incredible , rhythmic, tasty bass player ! Seraphine fantastic with those drum fills.
Kath my God ; one of the most under rated - totally insane versatile ; making that Guitar talk ! Wow ! 😎
This is an interesting edit of the song. Still great. Terry, Peter and Danny were an awesome power trio!

Nobody! Came close to this guy! #1
sad but 2 of my favourites died way to soon Kath a Stevie Ray Vaughn. miss both there magic. soulful and as skilled as anyone
Miss him to this day.

his powerful voice and brilliant guitar playing. Big influence on me growing up as a guitarist. God bless Terry.
And Hendrix opened for CTA heard the sound check & said he is better than me (Terry Kath)
The early 1970's rocked and I'm glad to be a so. Cal. "local." Yes, it really was that cool.✌
Wow am hewring about Whisky post many moons 👍
With apologies, nobody, not even Terry Kath, could carry the immensity of Chicago Transit Authority.
23 years old when he performed this.
I love Terry Kath. He was an amazing talent in the band!! They slowly turned to Jello when they went to the ballads.
Doesn't matter Stephen. I remember the early stuff. Was lucky to see the original 7 3x.
Well, that's true but they didn't have any other choice, no one would've ever replaced Terry! They all had families and needed to work.
Probably knew they couldn't duplicate the magic Terry brought to the band so the were forced to change .
Best guitarist before and since. Great band altogether
Absolutely ,

💯 correct. The group and especially TK did not get the recognition they so much deserved.
ruclips.net/video/7uAUoz7jimg/видео.html
"WOP" was kind enough to grant me an emoji after pointing out the Tanglewood sound check was the greatest segue in history. Their humility is amazing.
The band was never the same after him .Noticeable void !!!!!!
What an incredible mix of music !
Chicago early years
CTA ; these men would've won any Rock N Roll contest.
So damm creative & talented !
One of a kind album ....
Masterpiece ..🙋♂️
Thankful I got to see the band in Nov. 77, Nashville.
Wow-just wow. If you haven't seen the documentary that his daughter made-you must. Go out and buy it ASAP.
We're can you get it? I saw on UTube the show where she went to visit people that knew her dad. Great documentary.
So beautiful Terry Kath. Always loved.

DadBradTo5 Same sentiments sir. It happened right before my 28th birthday Jan. 31. 1978.

Liberation is THE rock jam on the CTA album. This instrumental will hold against any rock song of it's day. CTA remains in my top ten to this day.
perfecion. miss him.
41 years gone...Godspeed, Terry...
He could outplay and sing most any house band, like on tonight show. One of the most talented and missed musicians PERIOD!!
Thank you Terry Kath.
GREAT pictures, and perfect jam. left Chicago two years ago, miss the city coming back to stay one of these days.
Such a shame. What an awesome talent!
Beautiful video! Thank you!
Hendrix was a very humble guy...also in saying that Terry was better than him. Truth of the matter is, there were none better than Jimi. Terry was great as well and I love them both.
amazing jam session!
Terry kath and Alex Lifeson are my favorite guitarists. He left us far too early. Both underated.
Even Jimi Hendrix was impressed. When he died and Danny left, this band lost their drive.
Early Chicago (CTA) tore. It. Up. period! And Terry was way ahead of his time and we lost him so long ago!

De entre todos los buenos guitarristas, Terry Kath es el mas GRANDE ! !
Por algo Jimi Hendrix dijo: "El guitarrista mas grande del Universo"
Transit Authority is a master piece what a debut
He is among the first ten all time bass guitarist. A great man.

Your welcome. Terry was awesome and I thought this one (Liberation) was a great example of the bands jammin' chops along with showcasing Danny and, Peter.

Sounds like Jimi Hendrix three times over.
Jimi Hendrix was once asked who he thought was the greatest guitar player and he said Terry Kath.
Old friends, Chicago was home. Been 31 years since I left her.
Real guitar hero.

This is great material!

This is the stuff as far as I'm concerned damn.
Jimi had great respect for TK. In fact, Jimi said TK was a better guitarist than Jimi was. 25 or 6 to 4 is still in my top 3.

How in the hell could 12 people give this a thumbs down. Shame on you people you have no idea what music is.
Wonder if he ever played any of Alvin Lee's music ???
I'm sure he would've been more than capable.... He had tremendous guitar chops.
As far as I know TK never played with AL or played any of his songs...not that he couldn’t!!!!
All the.members of Chicago were the adept virtuosos but Terry was upper every one!!!

What are "raw stems"?
Like raw studio tracks but more compiled.. one drum track instead of on for each drum piece (snare, kick, etc) for instance
TKs. Wish I could hear HawkEye's final product he remixed.
I'm not sure I'm allowed to give to the public. Will find out though
