- Anne of Cleves' reputation as "the wife that not even Henry VIII - the consumer of women - could stomach" is "rubbish". She was beautiful, intelligent, loyal and in fact the only wife that Henry considered marrying twice!
I agree with you 100%! Thank you so much for making this video! Anne of Cleves is my favorite wife! For the longest time I thought I was the only one who thought she was the best. That Holbien painting is one of my favorites as well. She's so beautiful and she outlived all the wives, even Katherine Parr, who outlived Henry. I agree with everthing you said. You only need to look at her marriage settlement to know she was the cleverest.
Hats off to Anne of Cleaves, the most virtuous to Henry's children, friend to all of Henry's children, and the only wife of Henry who got the best deal of all, and after the divorce she didn't have to deal with his fat self anymore, and plus, she kept her head.
I have to say I agree. I think this guy makes a fantastic point, very effectively. But to suggest that quickly agreeing to the divorce showed intelligence, when compared to Katherine of Aragon is extremely unfair.
Katherine had been married for 20 years to Henry (more than the 5 other wives put together), and it ended by Henry attempting to force her to admit her marriage was a lie, and to agree that her daughter was illegitimate.
Poor Anne of Cleves. I love this info, thank you for sharing your knowledge of this beautiful misunderstood German woman!!
Exactly! If the painting was an attempt to trap the king...he would have killed his ass for it. And if he truelly didn't like her he wouldn't have asked her back and called her his sister. Anne like the other Ann was just smart. Good for her!
infectious enthusiasm. Lovely.
Ironically Henry VIII was attracted to smart and renaissance women but he could not manage them as a his wives. Catherine of Aragon was a traditional woman with whom Henry VIII had twenty two years of marriage. Anne Boleyn was a modern woman and for her he divorced his first wife. Motive was also to get a male heir but Anne Boleyn triggered the punch line. His third wife Jane Seymour was docile and conservative wife. After her death he was single for two years. It is also said that no woman wanted to marry him because of his marital history. I believe that Anne of Cleves was a brilliant woman. Though she was not like a renaissance woman, the way she agreed to the annulment it shows that she left the king and was not interested in the relationship. She also turned Henry VIII off on their first meeting. Like Jane Seymour Anne of Cleves was also conservative but she had a curvy body and darker complexion which Henry VIII found unattractive. His fifth queen Catherine Howard was also a modern woman but he could not have her as wife. The sixth queen Catherine Parr was also docile and submissive. The marriage was a successful one. So he beheaded two renaissance women and his marriage was successful with conservative women. I believe that Henry VIII would not have to have fifth and sixth wife if he had given his fourth marriage a chance.
On my opinion, Anne was the prettiest of Henry’s wives.
nicely argued you can tell hes really passionate about it well done!
Another thing that no one has mentioned yet is that Holbein continued to be employed by Henry. If the painting had been a bad likeness, then one might have assumed that he would be considered to have lost his touch and let go. It it had really been a grievous error he may have even been punished more severely, but it never happened.
Love this. Thanks and I will look forward to more.
Dear man who did the presentation:
Marry me xx
@AWickedMind I see Henry and Anne as being very different to Henry and Catherine. They had only been married for less than a year while Catherine had been Henry's wife for over 20 years. Anne didn't like Henry whereas Catherine always loved him. Catherine was offered a chance to free Henry from their marriage and retain Mary's legimtimacy by taking the veil, but she refused. I respect Catherine and next to Anne Boleyn she is my favourite but I don't think Anne of Cleves was submissive either.
Oaky I was agreeing you until you brought KOA into this. Unlike Anne Katherine had a daughter to think about. I agree that Anne was very pretty, plus I feel sorry for her, and how Henry treated her. Like Henry has right to talk about anyone's looks, he should looked in the mirror himself. but I still hold firm that KOA will always be the one true wife and Queen of Henry.
Henry had to treat Anne well so as not to cause a diplomatic incident with her brother, who could bring the German League to go to war with him. He was also relieved that she accepted his terms and the annulment. A lot has been left out here.
but in 1528 katherine was offered to take the veil instead and save mary from illegitimate status, but she refused showing that katherine cared more about status than mary, as persephonethemad said sometimes it's just better to walk away and in this case it shows because it was anne of cleves that survived and had a happier life, not katherine
because he said that anne was intelligent unlike anne, queen katherine had reasons why she just didnt step aside and the most important reason is mary...she wanted to safeguard mary's future and anne didnt have a child to think about so it was easy for her to step aside.
Diana O I
furthermore anne boleyn was not "a bit older" than mary there was a gap of 15 years between them approximately so technically and especially given the time period anne was old enough to be mary's mother
but surely she would have seen the affectionate side of him? afterall they were married for 20 years and it said that at their joint coronation that you could see the affection between them, so surely katherine would know that he was capable of some kind of affection, though granted stubborn
why do you resent it? i think its a fair point he made
i dont defend henry he was still a pig, but from what happened to anne of cleves proves that he could be reasonable if you accepted his will, also when mary submitted to him they were reconciled, again shows he could be reasonable, but he was just a control freak at the end of the day, in response to the anne annulment anne did not exactly have a lot of power in the tower did she, and despite her refusal it was annulled anway so katherine did have some form of choice though it was a difficult 1
GOOD INFO : WHY DID YOU TALK SOOO FAST ? IT WAS EVIDENT SHE WAS AMAZING ? LOOK AT WHAT SHE LEFT HENRY WITH !!!! GO GIRL 🌹🎁🍀🌴
If Anne had been a beauty I doubt Henry would have been so keen to divorce her . Clearly there was no attraction on Henry's part. Anne didn't need to be unattractive it was just Henry wasn't attracted to her. If he had been any difficulties could have been overcome .
ok i resent the fact that he pulled katherine of aragon in here but anne of cleves is my 2nd fav and i do believe that she wasnt ugly and that henry just wanted to get out of the marriage for catherine howard. she did survive unlike the others and was even friends with Queen Mary I
Not quite as black and white as that. Henry never did consummate the marriage - unheard of for him. He blamed his impotence on her, which may have been temporary. Anne did ask her ladies if Henry would kill her if she did not please him. She befriended the new queen Katherine Howard but after she was executed and Henry had no-one else lined up Anne wrote to the council and sent ambassadors, twice, to see if it were possible to reconcile with Henry as his queen, In the end he had to send a strongly worded letter ordering them to desist and that he would never take Anne back.
who did henry love more some say Jane Seymour others Anne Boleyn
+Demi Guerrero I think the fact that Jane gave him the one and only true desire of his heart--a son, and the fact that he beheaded Anne Boleyn is pretty self-explanatory.
Too bad the sound is horrible
this was 11 years ago sooo...
When Anne arrived at Rochester from Calais some of her new ladies in waiting, who had waited on the kings previous wives, were dismayed when they first saw her. They knew the king was not going to like her, and so it proved.
but still pore anne of cleves.
