    The suction is to pull the air out of the cracks so the resin could be pushed in and even then it often doesn't go in really deep. The cracks themselves are within the glass and do not reach the surface. Sometimes drilling another hole at the end of the cracks allows you to use suction to pull the resin through (you'll need two kits) or pressure to push the resin through the crack but more often it's just a place to try again once your first incomplete try has hardened sealing the original impact area. The idea of drilling is to open a passage to the crack within the glass. The professional glass repair equipment can apply greater suction and greater pressure than the hand kits. Typically, the DIY kits are used to just stop the crack from spreading further. Unless you practice a lot and are willing to drill multiple small holes for additional injection points and or to allow suction and pressure to pull the resin through the cracks, you're not going to wind up with a good repair. Polishing the surface afterwards can smooth out the excess resin but that also removes the oil phobic coatings.

    This does actually work, I've done it several times. JRE just tried to go too quickly with it. First do it in a place with minimal UV and take your time applying a little resin and forcing it down into the crack with a plastic edge (I use a plastic gasket scrapper). Then when you finally have it worked in well put on the curing strips and just let it do it's thing naturally and slowly in indirect UV to help let air get out. (This is why on a car you use a vacuum pump, to pull the air out of the crack).
    Using a UV lamp to speed up the curing only means more air stays in the crack making the crack more visible. It won't fix it 100% and shattered edges will still be visible, but it keeps the shards together so they won't come out over time which is a big plus. The smell will fade with time, just have to keep it out of a cover at home for a few weeks.

    Not sure if this was mentioned before -- but when I attempted to repair a crack in my windshield many years ago, the kit that I bought came with a syringe pre-filled with resin and an attachable suction cup. The idea was that you would scrape the top layer off to expose the crack and remove any contaminants, place the cup with the syringe attached over the crack, suck the air out of the crack by pulling up on the plunger, then "force-inject" the resin by dropping the plunger. You would then repeat this process until you didn't see any more bubbles rising up during the suction phase. Because of the vacuum required, the crack could be no larger than the diameter of the cup -- or about 1" -- so the procedure wouldn't have worked with the crack on your display. And while I must confess that it didn't really work for me at the time, I can appreciate the potential validity of this process -- at least in theory -- and speculate that perhaps with better equipment (e.g. a larger syringe that could produce more vacuum -- the one supplied was small, to the point that I frequently ended up pulling the plunger out completely, by accident), the outcome might have been different.

    this repair actually does in fact work, if done correctly. Don't be afraid the let the resin sit to have time to work down into the crack, it will only harden when you make it by subjecting it to the u.v. don't manipulate the cracks any further by spreading them with a blade either and last you can work the resin in with a plastic blade. it just takes patience and time.

      yeah I used to work in a plastic prototype shop and the vacuum idea I watched those windshield fixes it's awesome the vacuums crucial course I would be afraid as well on putting pressure on to the LCD I don't want it to go underneath and that would just create a big flood of resin so yeah but it's have some time I'm assuming to settle into its natural habitat clean it not with as strong of an alcohol I'd say more of a you know when Dix is fine that's blow and but the like 60% alcohol and a rag just the clean the area so it kind of seeps into the cracks now let that air dry from my experience again with dealing with vacuums and resins and Ford Focus clear headlight lenses for example we made it by hand I would then possibly if you have something don't laugh that vibrates the phone while it's settling in there and that resin will get there and into those spots and then most importantly when you do apply that top sheet for the Cure the timing is crucial it looks like you pulled that off early and you pulled some of the resin out of the crack and I don't know if you used any kind of alcohol that's probably the crucial part of their to cuz that will if you have any other cleaning agents that has a substance in there that won't allow to stick your just pulling the resin right out when you pull that card off and then I saw your going at it with razor blade they do have plastic sharp blades and yeah you want wood or plastic not metal because not all of these Gorilla Glass are really glass that's my two cents I'm going to do some more research.

    On the newer Samsung Galaxy Edge devices (S6 and S7) especially if the crack or chip is not around the edge you can actually apply pressure or vacuum without worrying about cracking. It's on a plastic substrate and it's flexible. (I'm sure you already know) I don't think the added pressure would damage it. I believe we all would love a video on that. +Zac St. Louis not had a chance yet. Im going to look in to it though still at some point. Also looking in to ways to do cold pulls on bonded glass lcds. Played around with heating a bit of wire with some success. Scratched the crap out of the polarizing layer and cracked the lcd but it was doa any ways. The idea of heating the wire is actually quite sound. Instead of heating the lcd/glass you simply run 5 volts from a computer power supply through some moly wire or the thinnest singe strand metal guitar string you can lay your hands on. That gets the wire quite hot. Getting under the glass between it and the lcd the idea is the wire heats the glue and cuts it. Like i said i scratched the crap out of the polorizer and got a little impatient and broke the lcd towards the middle of the attempt.
      If any one else wants to try heres a short list of how i set up the rig i made
      3/4 inch chip board 1/8 inch plexi sheet 2x 3 inch dry wall screws some moly wire.
      Screw in the dry wall screws through the plexi in to the chip board run the moly wire between the screws making sure it is tight. Attach positive 5 volt lead to one screw neg to the other and turn on. A computer power suply works great using the yellow and black wire. 12 volt might be to much and burn the wire in half but give it a shot. Or you can use a variable power supply. A chager for a phone etc will not work not enough amps.
      Get the moly wire between the lcd and glass gentle downward pressure on the glass while moving the lcd assembly slowly up the wire wth gentle presure. Keep gentle downward pressure on the edges of the assembly and slow steady pace and you should et the glass off. Don't go to fast you'll break the lcd like i did in my experiment (sorry no video)

  • @jothain

    Now it's late ok for this ok, but windscreen repairing doesn't work like that. Not even close. Generally you have something like vacuum cup which comes with repair kit. First you scrape all edges and see if there's glass parts loose. Then suction cup over damage, take injection needle with small amount of resin in it. Now take syringe to suction cup, pull vacuum with syringe and wait resin to get near suction cup inlet and push syringe to inject resin to hopefully air free crevices. Usually those syringes have actual holes that are blocked in certain steps, but basically that's how it's done. I've done it for my car windscreen and I successfully fixed damage and visual cue of damage is still seen with very closely looking, but anyway it's about 99% smaller than it originally was. Anyway, all in all. This is not how resin is used to fix glass damage.

    @JerryRigEverything does it works for small scratches? I have a very tiny scratch but it's deep. Did you tried using more pressure?

    hey not-jerry
    My kitten bit into my galaxy s8 and it managed to break the screen. So i think you should add kitten teeth to your screen scratch test.
    also, do you have an extra phone lying around the shop that a broke student could have ?

    In your case, you should try putting it in a container and pressur the container with air... I've thought about this... cause I use to have a small chip on both my car and my s7

    What if you used blow dryer to heat liquid creating it to be thinner to go thru the crack. Do you think it would work? I know on windshield repair, it was a hack I see them do to thin out the liquid.

    Push a bit on the glue when aplying it to your cracks, so you wiggle the glass a bit. Then it get in between the glass.

    For this application you to use a "thinner" resin.especially if you just let gravity seep the resin down into the cracks..

  • @SoundbytesMusic
    @SoundbytesMusic 8 лет назад

    This video shows how not to do it and that as well is a valuable help. Widening the cracks with a razor blade IMO is really a bad idea. Plus the resin needs to be injected into the cracks to hide them. I have to admit though I have no Idea yet how to do it properly. Anyway I think I'll give it a try and see how it comes out.

      So did you ever try this experiment?

    • @SoundbytesMusic
      @SoundbytesMusic 7 лет назад +1

      Well I've now had the opportunity to try it for myself after my daughter broke the display of her 10'' tablet.
      After applying the resin I widened the crack by pressing gently from the backside of the tablet. This worked quite well and allowed the glue to fill the crack. I have to say though that the crack already went from edge to edge. otherwise it most probably would have become longer by that precedure.
      The crack was not gone after the repair but its visibility was reduced a bit.
      Too bad it broke again after a few days. On a phone it might have lasted since a phone display is much smaller.

    I don't care about visual cracks but will it fill the cracks so the bits of glass wont break off? I have a badly cracked phones screen and want it still usable. Don't care about looks.

    What u should do is open the cracks. Yes u used a razor blade and slightly open the top. That's not enough to get it into the cracks. Also you didnt clean any glass bits from inside the crack. What u need to do is get a real sharp blade maybe precision blades used by doctors open up the cracks a bit more wide, clean the cracks then apply the liquid.

    A big factor in making an adhesive work is having it thoroughly wet the surfaces to be bonded. In this instance super glue (not gel) might work better to penetrate into the crack.

    With my Samsung Galaxy S8 I've got a nasty crack, but it wasn't from a drop it was crushed by my couch.
    So there is a hole aswell, i was hoping to fill the hole for water resistance, I've covers it with a screen protector, but I would like my phone to be rain proof.
