I've heard a similar story of Germans being stuck in their position and having to watch multiple people dying on a minefield. They made a ceasefire and helped with the retrieval of the dead and wounded. Or in other words the opposite of their job... Another funny example was a British pilot getting lost in poor visibility and joining an enemy plane formation by accident. The pilot next to him pointed him the right direction and none of them attacked him.
My man is croatian. He left for the US when he was 19, right after he finished his mandatory military enlistment. The stories he's told me of his youth are equal parts hilarious, harrowing, and heartbreaking.
Do you have any more information about the hand grenade selfie death? Just wondering how that grenade works, because the ones I used in the service it was fine to pull the pin so long as you held the spoon to the grenade, if you let that fly off then it would blow up. Just wondering how he would have time to take and post a picture in the few seconds it takes to go off. More details would be nice.
Russian grenades of various types don't work like most Nato pattern grenades. Russian grenades work in two ways. The first is the plunger needing to be pushed in. This is similar to the old Japanese grenades where you had to smack the plunger, hitting a firing pin which started the chemical fuse, the second type has the the chemical fuse start by pulling the pin itself with a striker dropping down and starting the fuse. On these, there is no means of putting the pin back in. The Russians do have a few spoon type grenades like what most countries use today, but the picture and the selfi story it's related too didn't use such a modern Russian grenade, instead it was a dropped early cold war Era grenade the man found.
I've a friend who, in the late 1980s, while working on his doctorate, took a pound of sodium and potassium and threw it in the local river to see what would happen. From my understanding, there was about 30 seconds of nothing followed by a geyser about 30 feet tall. Needless to say, he ran away quick.

Looks like he didn't realize that breathing the fumes makes you loose consciousness. 3 of the other victims were his family (2 sons). 5 children were left with one of the parents remaining (the last woman that survived the tank).
the last one, "Blew my mind" - I'm not an expert, but I also assumed that Even if you removed the Grenade Pin, as long as you dont release some sort of trigger, the grenade wouldn't detonate... then again, I wouldnt want to try it out regardless, for the sake of a selfie... C'mon now... :(
Because IT WILL NOT. Pin holds the spoon, spoon triggers the fuse. You pull the pin out, spoon will unlatch itself, usually when you throw it (spoon is no longer gripped with the body by hand, unlatches, fuse is lit - that cannot be reversed). When you hold the grenade, you can actually pull the pin out and then reinsert it as long as you have not let go of the spoon. There are a lot of grenade types but the one on the picture, soviet F-1 works that way.
