Stratas is a haunting Mimi, and Carreras' beautiful, unforgettable portrayal belongs in the pantheon of operatic performances. Each of them lets us fall in love with the character, thereby making us part of the wondrous art.
Stratus was, IMO, the greatest 'unsung' operatic vocalist/ actors in history. Saw here in LuLu at the Met. Stunning and unforgettable to this day! I think the enormous stress of a performance career may have been too much for her. Oh, my.
Stop making me blubber and cry with this emotionally manipulative beauty. I can't believe the same woman can be Mimi and the evil, dreadful Lulu. But Stratas is -- and so much more! PS. Dankje wel for the Dutch lesson!
hmm... not to compare, but in the first bit, Carreras does not seem to exert as much care with his notes as other tenors would (Bjorling, for example). But gosh, his acting is great, and when he sings, he really pours his heart into it--you can feel it. And it doesn't hurt that he was so handsome!
