You forgot to mention that 3ds max is very complex software which you can't learn in very short time to totally understand 3ds max it took me 6+ months nd to learn SketchUp it took me only 1 month

If you give both software same time for a project modelling... SketchUp will give you the better output... (Cause SketchUp take less time for modelling, so you can save a lots of time and can use that time for detailing that...) And there is no difference between render output... Yah, you can't make animation by using only SketchUp... But, you can make far more better animation than 3ds Max by using Lumion with sketchUp...
being a faculty and Creative head with work experience of more than 10 years, i can tell you, efficiency of an application depends on the user not software.

3ds max comes with multiple render engine options out of box, also includes physically accurate Arnold renderer. you can always get a third party pluging like Vray if your workflow needs that.
