Lately I have been lucky to have the opportunity to get to know Marc Herremans.The story of Marc Herremans sounds like a novel. At the beginning of his triathlon career, Marc Herremans dreamed of becoming the most complete athlete in the world. His result at the Ironman triathlon in Hawaii in 2001 proved that his dream could be realized. Herremans finished 6th in the world’s toughest race. On January 28 of the following year, a tragedy happened. Herremans had an accident during a bicycle training on the island of Lanzarote and was injured in the D5 and D6 vertebrae. He was left paralyzed from the chest down.
Instead of giving up, Herremans began his second life from his hospital bed. Six months after the accident he returned to the Ironman triathlon, this time in a wheelchair. Obviously this return was too early after the terrible accident, but Herremans did not give up. In 2004 he finished 3rd in the Ironman, in 2005 he finished 2nd, and in 2006 he won.Since then he has taken up the same sport in a wheelchair, achieving numerous milestones and becoming a role model for many people with and without disabilities.
Besides having a unique drive, Marc Herremans is also a person who with his foundation “To walk again “day in and day out helps many people who have the dream of walking again. He travels the world and gives inspirational speeches thus raising all the necessary funds.
I want to dedicate this song to him and thank him for reminding me this “There will be sunshine, there will be rain but no matter what, a smile is our choice.”
