Andy, as a pedestrian it's actually safest to cross at the crosswalk because the visibility for both pedestrians and vehicles is highest at the intersection. You can't control traffic coming from the opposite direction so if you start walking behind a car and then a car starts coming through from the other direction it may not see you. This is also why, as a driver, you shouldn't wave pedestrians across the street. You can only control your car and if you wave someone across the street there may still be oncoming traffic that you can't control that may be driving too fast to stop (its own separate issue) when pedestrians are crossing the street outside of designated crossing areas.
For any car situations, whether you’re driving or walking around cars. “It’s not nice to be polite, it’s nice to be predictable.” Follow the rules of the road and do it as quickly as possible.

Two things I do as a pedestrian I think is helpful: I signal where I intent to go (helps if I will just turn the corner); if I wish to let the traffic go before me, I stop walking 2or3 meters before the intersection.
On the subject of walking and road rules. Does anyone else hate having to actual stop at a corner when walking? If I’m at a 4 way going straight, and I get a red light. I will turn left or right just so I don’t end up stopping.
I went to Portugal in May, and i learned that Salazar liked the Golden Gate Bridge so much that he was like screw it, i want one and made them make a carbon copy of it in Lisbon. They also stole the Christ the Redeemer statue as well from Rio which you can see looking at the bridge.

Ya'll need roundabouts to replace them fatal four-way intersections man, it lets stupid people navigate the roads so much better, no traffic build ups. America needs to get up on them roundabouts finally. All you gotta do is give way to your right then you're on your way.
I do like "I hope you drop your strawberries". I might have to replace "I hope you die in a housefire" with that one. Seems a little less aggressive but will have more of an effect on their day.
