    Good work. I had that slow turn over a couple times and everything else checked out just like this did. I found the starters were weak so I swapped them out and all was good again. The free jobs always turn into grief but it doesn't stop us from helping others. You're a good man Sean.

    Nice work Zippo. I recently have had two Briggs engines with broken compression release units on the cam shaft. Hours of work to replace but now Briggs has them back ordered for months. I ended up having to use an aftermarket cam, and hope it will hold up??? I just read further comments, that compression is high if that is the starting compression.Thanks

    i bought a single cyl briggs from a rider that had a separate choke cable , to put on my rider that had a single cable . used it for years by hand operating choke mechanism each time i started it . discovered one day that briggs just installed a blocking plate to prevent throttle cable from being able to operate choke . removed the plate and choke works off the throttle cable . yes , i do like separate cables much better , but it worked .

    Hey Zip, I'm a proud owner of an old Simplicity Landlord model # 990351 with the 42" model 990285 deck. I still use it to mow the yard. It seems simplicity doesn't carry parts for these old machines and I just blew the cross drive pulley with the hex nut and woodruff key. Before I junk it I was wondering if you had a stockpile of parts for these old veterans. I will look for a reply when you get a chance.

      I do have two starters for them and might give that a go. The initial reason I didn't was because of the owners story that it's been hard cranking for years with the Courage in it. Since replacing the battery cables and solenoid and it still struggling a little, I may just go ahead and do that and it may very well remedy the slow cranking issues coupled with the rewiring I did. Great suggestion Billie! Zip~

    Holy smokes with all that wiring. You did a great job of explaining it to us so I think I understand how to do this. However, I am still in the process of figuring out which side of the toast to put the butter on. I wonder if it still needs a tightened ground wire or maybe the timing key is a little sheared. That is your field of expertise. Paying it forward to a neighbor is a wonderful thing. Thanks for that. Thanks for all the videos.

      Heya Mr C! Although I had nothing to do with the poor manufacturing, I WAS responsible for shearing the PTO bolt off in the crap Courage. The Gent is 87 years old, and I just wanted him to have a usable mower and since I had that donor Intek, I ate the labor. He did pay me for the new battery and the replacement PTO clutch, but a similar job I'm doing here soon is due to owner negligence and now that they know what they did wrong, they're more than willing to pony up AND have learned a valuable lesson. They thought they were doing their engine a "favor" by taking the blower housing off so it would cool better. Not realizing that the blower housing is KEY to directing the fan generated air across the engine to keep it cool. So yeah......Ooops on their part. Cheers my Friend! Zip~

    It's either the starter is worn out, or the camshaft needs replacing..... Ah ground issue.

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  2 года назад +2

      I'm leaning towards a weak starter, but where I got stumped was, on the engine test stand, the engine cranked over great. It wasn't until it was mounted and wired into the Cub that it had issues. Couple that with what the owner stated about the Courage doing the same thing and this is why I put new battery ground and solenoid cables on as well as replaced the solenoid with a USA made.
      If you watched the video of this engine while I was working on it, you should notice that the compression numbers reflected that the decompression bump was indeed working as was evident with the decrease in compression on the right bank and slight increase on the left bank once the valves were adjusted, which brought both cylinders to exactly the same psi which was 165. Well within the acceptable range. Prior, the right bank was at 185psi.
      Am I missing something other than the possibility of the starter being wore out? I always welcome others opinions and advice. Cheers! Zip~

      @@ZippoVarga I would go down the starter, or ground hole.... If ya want check the ignition switch for corrosion.

  • @ablelock
    @ablelock 2 года назад +1

    Just curious if the ignition switch could be bad on the cub and that’s why it was doing what it was doing maybe the contacts inside the switch could be bad.

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  2 года назад +2

      If the key switch was suspect, it wouldn't send the low amperage signal to the starter solenoid at all. Since it properly triggers the starter solenoid I don't suspect it is in need of replacing. BUT.....I've been wrong plenty of times and stranger things have happened. If Ken has more issues with it I will give that a try as well as swap out the current starter for a new one to see if that helps the engine turn over more readily. Cheers! Zip~

    @billsmith1770 2 года назад +1

    i hope i'm wrong (not unusual) but that twin seems to still turn over too slowly . in the previous vid it seemed like it didn't spin as easily as it should . from what i've read , the twin should spin easier than the single , because approximately only half as many cubic inches are in the compression stroke at one time .

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  2 года назад +2

      I agree Bill. When the engine was on the test stand it turned over great. The only thing I didn't replace was the key switch, but I did replace both of the battery cables and solenoid. There is something else going on with that POS Cub that's preventing the full cranking amps being sent to the starter. As per the owner, it just needs to last him 2 or 3 more seasons, but one thing is for sure....He'll never buy another MTD. He told me when he first got it it had issues and needed warranty repair right out of the box and he stated he hasn't been happy with it from day one. MTD has successfully damaged many once great brands reputations. All in the name of profits over quality. An all too common occurrence these days. Cheers! Zip~

    hey Zip, does the 03 Intek not have a rectifier/regulator? I can clearly see it on the older one, am I missing something? Thanks!

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  2 года назад +1

      Great eye Terry! And no, the '03 has a DC Stator. Briggs makes over half a dozen different Stater's depending on what the manufacturer requests. The AC to DC Stater's are more reliable and provide more Amperage for the most part where the DC units are typically used on machines with less need for the higher amperage AC to DC Stater. On this Zero Turn, the delivered Amperage from the DC Stater is adequate since there are no other power robbing accessories. Again, great eye and great question! Zip~

      Oh definitely Willy. The fact they were cross threaded from the factory didn't help any either. As I said to another, MTD has single handedly destroyed MANY once reputable Brands in the Riding and push mower industry. And all in the name of greed. Build them to make it to the end of the pathetic warranty, then make even more on the parts end. Quality has fallen by the wayside with so many companies that it's turned our society into having a disposable mentality. Their plan worked, and more money is spent on absolute garbage daily as a result. Sickens me. I'm off my soapbox now lol. Cheers my Friend! Zip~
