London Underground Jubilee Line: That Noise! 18 February 2020

- Everyone loves the noise the London Underground Jubilee Line 1996 Stock trains make as they accelerate away from stations. So here it is with several trains at each of four stations! The video was filmed on Tuesday 18 February 2020.
Its not the trains making the noise, there is a chap employed by London Underground and he sits in a little room with a violin and its played over the tannoy. He was homeless and used to beg with his violin. Sadiq heard the sound and said "I know what we'll do"
That's hilarious. 😅 no sacarsm, that is a Zinger! 😅🎺🎻 I love musical surreal humour! 😍
@Free YT Films qq
TfL should hire more homeless violinists to make these noises on other lines.
When they accelerate it seems like there is no end to the top speed 😂
1992 TS trains have a higher acceleration rate.
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO 2009 stock: hold my beer
@@5-Consecutive-Hairpin-Turns What I love about the 2009 TS trains is the design of the driver's cab front exterior, the side to side curvature, plus the windows on either side of the central door. However, I don't like the body sides and shell profile, imagine if the 2009 TS trains were designed with the exact same body profile and side windows which extend into the roof as on the 1992 TS, but with the 2009 TS drivers cab front, it would have been perfect.
By the way, I was born in July 1974, so I have a bias for Underground trains that were built before 1986, with unpainted aluminium bodies, and metal and wooden interiors. Unfortunately very little film footage exists of District Line R.49 Stock, but one car has survived into preservation at the Acton Depot Museum. I also loved the 1962 TS.
@@5-Consecutive-Hairpin-Turns Victoria line appears to have the fastest acceleration as exiting a station they always go downhill
It's a piece of metal, and I love it XD.
Imagine a Tesla with this sound 🤤
I would litteraly lick the tesla.
oof
I’d have a hard time getting to work as I’d nut every time I start driving forwards
You can do now with US versions via the boom box.
Lol
Thanks to their cool sound, the 1996 stock is one of my favourite trains on the London Underground.
From a non-Londer.
Cpr1234 same
I prefer it’s older twin, the 1995 train stock
@@MalaysianAviator737-8 that is actually younger in actual build 😁
Damien Manu i just discovered it. Too sad i
The track quality isnt up to par making it slow as hell. I actually thought its age was the reason and the 1996 stock was its twin on steroids
It's weird that so many underground trains of different ages and different sounds exist.
I think the distinctive noise of the motors is extremely soothing to the ears, it's the best sounding and looking train ever to have run on the London Tube.
The northern line also uses this tube stock
@@bonzomcdrumcat4989 but not with the same motors
@@rayannelkachtoul8226 96 stock and 95 stock use very similar, if not identical motors. It’s the traction electronics that generate the sound.
@@bonzomcdrumcat4989 The stock is different, the 1996 stock is actually older than the 1995 stock and is probably more similar to the 1992 stock in terms of technology
Funny thing is 96 stock was finished before 95 stock
Best sounding trains on the network
Victoria line is the best :(
Has the best sound
General Zain Victoria close 2nd!
And Central close 3rd, with Overground in 4th place

When I come back to London, I want to hear this noise.
One of the lines I'll be revisiting first chance I get.
It is not a noise, it’s a SOUND

NOUN
vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear:
"light travels faster than sound"
So, you're 50% right. Something can be both a noise and a sound, but in this context, it's just a sound, since it isn't unpleasant.
The jubilee has a very distinct futuristic sound and it's why it's so cool but if you want a more traditional sound, visit a picadilly or central line.
Central line? That bursts your ears
If the Jubilee Line gets new trains they MUST reproduce this sound with speakers or something
Anyone remember those days before wearing face coverings was mandatory on public transport? And not seeing one single sticker or poster saying "Please keep your distance"... seems like such a distant memory now 😔😔😔
Yes. Here in Chalco, Mexico we are one of the mexican valley mounicipalities that have more cases of COVID u_u.
But If You have readen Manuel Payno's novel, You may visit Chalco.
Yes I remember and unfortunately it does feel like for ages I've not been able to travel
I will never forget this
Those days will be back one day, we can’t wear masks forever. Riding the Tube has become a depressing experience since the pandemic
That day is over! 😀
I may be the only one...

_Oh hello_
Remember going on these with my mother back in the 90s. Love the sounds, love the sound of the doors and their unique fast motion and their wrap-around design. Going on these were a treat. Still one of my favourites.
The reason why it makes those sounds is because of its traction system. It uses GEC Alsthom GTO-VVVF.
They use the same motor that they use for the class 465 and 466, I think
@@roastedfanta9474 Do you play SCR, you a SG?
@@amarg.247 scr eh lol
@@amarg.247 not the same motor but the same company who made the motors
It sounds similar to the Metrovalencia trains honestly
That is the ALSTOM (name of manufacturer) sound. It is identical to the vast majority of RER trains in the Paris region. The RER (regional express network) is a bit like our Overground.
in our place we have only siemens or bombardier igbt vvvf
Those traction motors are French?
Thought they were made by Metro Cammel or something
@@Simulation101YT Depends on year of manufacture. Metro Cammell ceased production 16 years ago. It was taken over by GEC Alsthom, then acquired by Alstom. So to answer your question, the motors were made in UK, but the company is now French.
Yes Alstom made the 96 stock, and the motor is a 90s alstom motor
@@joegage5893 Our electric buses have Siemens motors, but they have an amazing roaring sound to them! (VDL Citea LLE-99)
they have been my favorite londond underground train since i was a kid lol. and they sound amazing, if only the newer ones kept this sound lol
The echoes at the huge Canary Wharf station makes it better :)
I absolutely love that sound, sounds like something out of star wars, like some ship entering hyperspeed
I love the jubilee sound when it accelerates and slows down, the sound is amazing. I could listen to it all day lol
When I was 6 or 7 I went to London and I think it was one of my first times on a train, so now the 1996 stock is just cemented into my brain what a tube train should sound like
The jubilee line is my favorite on the London Underground.

Anybody from Vancouver, Canada will think this is very similar to the sound of the Skytrain. It's so much more pleasing than the avalanche of metal that comes barreling down the tracks here in NYC 😂😂😂
Those old original trains in Vancouver nearing 40 years old are sounding like an avalanche of metal when they come into a station. Some places the inside of the train was loud around 100 decibels. When they do start they sound like they have a three speed transmission.
There's a video explaining why trains make these kinds of noises and it was the first time I ever heard this one. Now I'm addicted to the sound.
Thanks very much for watching.
sounds like Singapore North East Line C751A
This is one of the best trains on earth in my opinion
Thanks very much for watching.

true I love jubilee❤
Best sounding
1 Victoria
2 jubilee
3 central
4 S stock
That noise is NOTHING to the ear splitting sounds you get inside the carriages along certain parts of the track. TFL should either issue warnings about unsafe decibel levels or issue earplugs.
Agree! I went from Westminster to Stanmore yesterday, absolutely deafening at times, and a really rough ride at some points. Still love the Jubilee though!
Noise-cancelling headphones. Cuts out 90% of the sound, but the traction motors still slip through happily.
There's a reason why London puts barriers on the tube line
There's a reason they fail
but seriously i don't see barriers on the rail they sound definitely put some on
I like the northern line and the jubilee line trains!
Like if you agree
I used to drive 95’s on northern. They use IBGT which is a more modern system as opposed to gto thyristors on 96 stk.
0:27 sounds very similar to an F1 N/A V10
Haha yes very accurate
If you like this, try a 465 at Waterloo East (they'll let you through if you go to Waterloo just to see the trains, in my experience). They sound like the Renault V10!
Literally the first thing that comes to mind is Wilbur Soot's Jubilee Line
A lot of people may think the changes of sounds are of the train changing gear, which isn't true. So many train enthusiasts will tell you that it's because it uses motors from GEC Alsthom (the company who supplied the motors for this train) and mostly "GTO-VVVF inverters". The GTO is actually the name of the transistor/thyristor technology used, but not all sounds relate to the transistor technology. The sound you hear is caused by the VVVF drive pulsing out an artificial AC wave from a DC supply. And again, it's not the train changing gear, it's caused by a byproduct of how the software has been programmed. When we use pulse-width modulation with AC motors in 3-phase configurations, we require 2 sets of transistors for both positive and negative, and since we have 3 phases it means we need a total of 6 transistors. GTO thyristors (as our so called transistors) can only pulse at about 400 times a second. This means when we reach a certain speed, we need to cut out some pulses to stop the transistors being overloaded. And since the pulsing is what causes the sound, each time we remove pulses the sound goes back down. Then we have it; the distinctive sounds of the Jubilee line 1996 tube stock!
Thanks for the great comment and for watching.
The next generation of Underground trains will be fart-powered
The short story is that the traction electronics generate the sound. Hard to read a comment when it isn’t separated into paragraphs 😉
Why is it that two similar (largely identical) types of tube stock, those on the Northern and those on the Jubilee, have such vastly different noises?
Because the 1995 stock on the Northern line, has a different design spec
Northern Line trains get electricity from lines in a more efficient way than Jubilee line trains and can switch very large chunks of current very quickly without damaging the systems of the trains. That is why Northern Line stock does not make that whooping screaming noise when it starts, which Jubilee line stock does.
Malcolm Hartney The Northern and Jubilee have the same motors, just different VF drives. The top end noise of the 95 stock is identical to the 96 stock
@@forza223bowe5 Thanks. And what is a VF drive?
Malcolm Hartney It means variable frequency motors
Oh I love that sound been on that one many times heard the sounds so much its lovely
LONG LIVE THAT SOUND
part one why british trains are better then american trains
It’s like a F1 race car
They Shoud Have The These Trains On The Piccadilly Line!
They should have them on every line!
ZLD Smogless I like 4 seats on the bakerloo line they should have them on the jubilee line it would be epic
Or maybe the 1995 stocks. Have you noticed how it is that train inside?
BlacK X it has a gorgeous interior and bright lighting. Too much blue in it though. Would love to see some trains retain the yellow handrails
Its really sad that they are getting rid of the old motors
Sounds like the NEL C751a in Singapore
The departing sound of that train sounds like a worse version of the Transperth C series train
Defo turn ur volume up when listening to this.
Wow the motor sounds similar to Singapore's SBS Transit North East Line (c751a)
I wish I had an electric car that sounded like that at low speeds!
How I miss London, especially the underground.

This sounds the same as the purple line train in Singapore
Great video mate I really like watching your videos it's great to watch 😊👍💜💜
I hope this sound doesn’t change or go away
The nicest sounding train on the London Underground, I wish to go on it although I don't have a reason to go and I'm the type to go stratford from west ham
Have you heard the Helsinki M100 sounds? They are nicer than these
I have a Helsinki Metro video on my channel. Thanks for watching.

Canning Town to Waterloo is deafening

The R Stock which served on the District Line from 1950-1983 sounded better
Wha-
Thanks for posting. I thought I was alone in loving the sounds from the Jubilee Line.
I'm sure train is going between BERMONDSEY and St John's wood
wow.. screaming f1 engine back from 2005-206😁😁😘❤️
The sound these trains make is unique to the Jubilee line and is caused by dc - ac power converters and regulators called thyristors.

The best sound I've ever heard.
Uhh
That sound remind me the Alstom Frota F sound of São Paulo Subway
Sounds like the TTC T1
I’m in Canada rn for family reunion but I really wanna come back to London for this sound 🥶
I don't get it. The 1996 is made by Alstom, and the 465s are made by British Rail, so how can they have the same sounds?
Metro Cammell became Alstom, and BREL had different sounding motors of which their equipment were replaced with Hitachi motor equipment in 2010/11
Everyone love the 96000 series/1996 stock accelerating
I Love It Too!

Why are you using red in London underground(tube)?
This sound effect was used in 2002 spider man
The underground train is more better than South Eastern

and heard the ‘’waaaa” sound which was good
And loads of rush those people 😎 me😡
I love that noise-

Do they have traction motors on every bogie? Because you hear the acceleration sound very clearly, no matter if you are at the third wagon or at the first wagon.
Michael 1213 no. Some carriages such as the second to last are dead quiet.
Front and middle carriages and rear are motored. 4 out of 7 cars are motored
why do the 1995 stock not have the same motor, could they not change them out so the 1995 stock northern line could be more efficient
The 1995 stock should be more powerful, it has only 6 cars and more motors.
But maybe the motors are strangely diffrent to the jubilee line motors?
I think a change of motor would be very expensive. I don't think that the Piccadilly trains got a new motor in mid 90s when they had a deep refurbishing, for example.
Hadleyyy k The 1995 and 1996 stocks use the same motors, just different drives which make the sounds
Malcolm Hartney The motors get replaced every 3 months
There is something oddly satisfying with the Underground motors accelerating and also decelerating.... beautiful!
I think they should have gates for safety reason give your people family resurence
I love this sound
I prefer the sound of the 1972 stock, but with everything going more electric and auto the ones on the Jubilee Line are the new level of pleasure
Ah good ole chap Jubilee
I like the 1996 motors
I think when the train starts, that sounds like an older f1 car. Or not? Maybe...
*Really Good Motor Sound*
whats bad about it
Jubilee and Victoria line trains will forever be my favourites because of the noise the acceleration makes.
