Playing the Roland SH-201 - Carlo Mezzanotte

For a while, the Roland SH-201 was the king of the cost-effective VA synthesizers, with a rich sound and a good dotation of features. The most important functions have dedicated knobs/sliders/switches on the front panel, while the more sophisticated ones require double-button pushes (which aren't always easy to remember), or the use of its software editor. The onboard effects aren't top-quality perhaps, but they pair quite well with the sound of the oscillators and filters; and the onboard sequencer is more than respectable. The case is plastic but sturdy, making the instrument ridiculously light at 5 kg. A lot of power in a rather unassuming package.
I put together this video very quickly, just before selling my SH. A mix of my own patches and a few tweaked presets.
Per qualche tempo, il Roland SH-201 è stato il re dei VA a basso costo, con un suono potente e una buona dotazione di parametri. Alle funzioni più importanti ed immediate sono dedicati i controlli del pannello frontale; per accedere a quelle più sofisticate è necessario imparare una serie di combinazioni di pulsanti (non sempre facili da ricordare), oppure usare l'editor. Gli effetti incorporati non sono forse di primissima fascia, ma si accoppiano molto bene con il suono degli oscillatori e dei filtri; e il sequencer è più che rispettabile. La struttura è di plastica ma solida, e questo contribuisce a renderlo leggerissimo, solo 5 chili. Una buona dose di potenza racchiusa in un aspetto apparentemente modesto.
Ho messo insieme questo video molto in fretta, subito prima di vendere il mio SH. Diversi suoni originali, e qualche preset modificato.

Well, thanks - it *is* a very nice synth, but a bit tedious to program, despite all the knobs (see the description). To access many of the functions, several different *non-labeled* button combinations are necessary. So you either keep going to the manual, or you use the software editor... after a while, it gets boring. That said, I miss it. Selling it was one of those things: I needed the space, and I had a buyer ready... this little video is my final tribute to the SH-201. :-)
