Dude. Thank you for actually playing musical stuff while demoing the sounds. So many reviewers (looking at you, SonicState) just play a note or hold a chord but you show how the patches can be used musically and that's so much more important. Kudos!
I think the most plasticky built synth in the world was Novation's X Station, which could also deliver some great sounds, but I never owned an SH-201, so..
Dzięki i proszę bardzo :) W opisie dodałem link do pobrania tych dźwięków. Są tam dwa pliki do otwarcia w edytorze, albo SH-201 Librarian. Wystarczy podłączyć syntezator kablami midi i można przesłać wszystkie patche. Pozdrawiam !
I got one recently and just did a sound comparison for myself against the System-1. Up until now I had it in my head that the system-1 and 8 were the bee's knees but I found (somewhat unfortunately since its not still being made) that the sh-201 had a fuller sounding supersaw that had more presence and I guess Immediacy / in your face sound. The system-1 was very close which is great because super saw's aren't on all synths and the detune works well and its probably higher bitrate but it still sounds less tangible and thick than the sh-201 in my opinion. The sh-201 has a similar in your face power to its super saw that the jp-8000/8080 has. The system-1 has its own fineness and delicateness which can make some great sounds too. I also tested straight saw waves against each other and unfortunately thought that the sh-201 had a phatter low end and a higher high end than the system-1's saw. I say it's unfortunate because a newish synth seems to not sound quite as good as one 8 years older (or 18 years older if it's the same sound engine as the jp-8000). I love the system-1 and now my new sh-201 as well. They both have their own character and I'm glad I have both. (and they're both really ugly haha)
The SH-201 has LOTS of aliasing when you play supersaw. Try the higher keys. Turn the cutoff down about 1/2 to hear whats going on the mids-lows. Listen to the lower spectrum: its FULL of disturbing aliasing noise. The highs are also dirty, not silky smooth as the jp8000/8080. The ADSR envelopes are not as tight as any other synth on the market. You cannot make a really snappy plucky sound. Still a great synth but you have to know it well.
just bought one of these and super excited after watching videos such as this! it's definitely going to be a learning curve but....after looking for a synth for a while now, i think this one will be worth it for what i envision. Thanks so much for uploading this!
Made a video of the process which I am uploading as we speak. Used your patches which you kindly made available. Thank you immensely for that. Will leave a link to your video in the description of mine. I am so incredible happy with the result, a whole new synth with awesome sounds, thanx to you. Happy new year
Nice!!!!!! getting one of these to knock up some new trance anthems! SICK! If i output this through my guitar effects flanger and phaser that could get interesting!
I am not fan of trance, distortion or HPF sounds, but I think this synth can make very good vintage and warm 80s sounds if you know how to program it. There are some of them very good in this demo: (0:47) - (1:19) - (1:40) - (2:15) - (3:02) - (3:15) - (3:55) and (6:32)
Thanks for comment. That's exactly why i bought this synth. Oscillators are probably sampled, filter's resonance is just horrible but there is some kind of unique, weird quality in all this. With a little love this toy-ish synth can produce some nice sounds.
@@marcinmirkowicz4993 As you've demonstrated very well here. Richard Barbieri of Japan and Porcupine Tree had no reservations about using one either. That surely counts for something.
It looks cheap, but it really is great. I used to have one a few years back and I really miss it. I bought a Roland Gaia after that, but it didn't sound as good at all and I didn't like playing it as much either.
Robin, you won't regret buying an SH-201. Been playing synths for 40+ years and even owend some of the early SH synths, and love what Roland did with the SH-201. The interface is Roland TB-303 meets JX-3P+PG200. As for learning how to play, neither can most of the top 40, so don't let that put you off from making great music. I gave my original SH-201 to a friend and haven't seen it since, so just bought another on eBay having also been inspired by this video. Everyone goes for the JP8000, but the 201 is an overlooked gem. Apparently when they came out Madonna's keyboard player took 2 on tour. Richard Barbieri (Japan, Porcupine Tree and solo composer), Jean Michel Jarre, not to mention Hyperspace and others here on you tube use this instrument.
What strikes me about Roland synth en key, standard there's a lot of reverb on the most presets. It gives a big sound to synthetic sounds but when you start to listen to the dry sound, you will hear often not that great filter.
Great demo sir. Fantastic. How about the filter? Is it good? I'm in Cinematic, Synthwave and Electronic. You can find it for €250 this days. Maybe I will get one. Love it❤️BTW I linked this video as my fav if I need them. Never have enough sounds:)
Thanks! The filter is like Fiat Multipla - it's ugly but it can take you to some cool places :D The resonace is thin and digital. Got it's charm though.
@HYPERSPACEMUSIC Amazing work for this so heavily underrated synth (its reputation would have been so much better, if Roland would have created videos like yours back in 2006, when the product was introduced)! Sh-201 is not the most powerful synth for bass sounds. Itd good for leads, pads and some retro stuff. Thanks Marcin, i'm looking to backup my custom patches to my computer (MacOS Mohave 10.14). The latest drivers on Roland are outdated and do not work. Tips on how to do so?
You can try to run Windows or older MacOS in virtual machine ( like VMWare ) or install Windows 10 using BootCamp. I'm using Windows 10 and the Librarian works fine.
I couldn't get the USB drivers working after several hours of fiddling about on Win 8.1. Then I realised the editor and librarian work like a charm via MIDI handshake between SH-201 and my computer. So if you're struggling with the USB connection, I recommend MIDI instead!
Someone can help How to load the driver and the liberian Do i have to set the midi in the sh-201 Thanks i try with both Windows and mac? Thanks I want this patch 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You need to download sh-201 librarian ( it's avalialiable at Roland website ). After install you need to setup MIDI in and MIDI out in librarian settings. Then open file with patches and click send/upload. Sh-201 should recieve data thru MIDI connection.
thanks for the reply, i downloaded the software using a usb to my pc but still nothing appears, sorry for sounding so dumb. any more info would be appriciated
1. Check if your operating system is supported by the driver. For Windows its XP or 8. It doesn't work on 10. 2. Turn on SH-201 and start the Librarian 3. Find MIDI settings and choose USB connection for IN and OUT - SH-201 should be listed there. 4. Open .mid file and send patches to synth ( my patches have no names ) Program's help can be useful too :)
You can upload these patches using SH-201 Librarian software. Connect synth to a computer with MIDI cables. Setup connection in software (MIDI In and OUT ) and your'e pretty much done. Open file with patches. Then hit Write All button and wait till it's finished.

An editor/librarian and MIDI connection between your sh-201 and computer
thanks for the reply, i downloaded the software using a usb to my pc but still nothing appears, sorry for sounding so dumb. any more info would be appriciated
1. Check if your operating system is supported by the driver. For Windows its XP or 8. It doesn't work on 10.
2. Turn on SH-201 and start the Librarian
3. Find MIDI settings and choose USB connection for IN and OUT - SH-201 should be listed there.
4. Open .mid file and send patches to synth ( my patches have no names )
Program's help can be useful too :)

How to load the patches on sh201? just with the software? or mide cable?
Greetings!
You can upload these patches using SH-201 Librarian software. Connect synth to a computer with MIDI cables. Setup connection in software (MIDI In and OUT ) and your'e pretty much done. Open file with patches. Then hit Write All button and wait till it's finished.
do you voice string in your keyboard?
Can the filter effect the audio input signal?
