In 1994 found an '81 Diesel LX with 5spd and A/C on a farm about 50mi from where I live. It was in rough shape, had been taken apart, and was spread all over the property. I put it back together and drove it home on 3 cylinders, restored it, and have been daily driving it ever since. I built a trailer for it, and have towed smaller cars with it, using a tow dolly. I've used it for road trips all over CA, and from 2015-2022, it made the 1,200mi round trip from here to the Grand Canyon each year (so that I could run in the Grand Canyon) sometimes 3 times a year. It has an aftermarket 26gal fuel tank, so it'll go about 1,000mi on a tank of diesel.
Oh goodness, you are 40 minutes away from where I am at! That's cool that you are visiting Utah. I got a '70 Saab, two Metropolitans, and a few other cars to show off if you ever get bored.
I knew a Zimmer surgical products representative who transported instrument sets all over central and southeast Missouri in a VW diesel pickup with camper shell. He put a lot of miles on it. He was headed for Springfield one day when the engine went sour. He pulled into a Ford tractor dealership in Urbana, where a mechanic diagnosed a bad injector. A Ford tractor injector was installed, and he was on his way.
Greetings from Cornwall uk or as I call it, Cornywall. In this country that I'm in for now, Those caddy's are worth at least 2 suv's I love the design and esp with the aluminium back box.
What I find funny is this tiny little 2wd pickup has a longer bed (8ft?) than 90% of trucks on the road today. The type of guy who would say this is a "girls truck" probably has a 4 or 5 foot bed on his that you need a ladder to load anything up into it due to being so high off the ground lol.
I remember going to a dealership when I was stationed there up in Rome NY, I just wanted to check it out. What I DID NOT like about it, was the fact that it's unibody construction! Still cool though. Yeah, these days everyone and their grandmother has an SUV! Worst part is😊 they all look the same!
The rabbit pickup came out in 1975 and I remember looking at them in the dealers lot in Middle Island New York. At that time the small pickups were all over the place from Toyota and Datsun,Mazda. I guess VW was trying to catch up with everybody else and they still sell a small pickup in Mexico.
The reason why that car has I made it there to that parking lot? It's because of its reliability and also because of the serviceability of that vehicle that thing can be. I'm repaired by. A mechanic just about anywhere. Especially given if we they know what they're doing, and both mechanics can figure that out. Pretty quickly. Now, forty or so years in the future, all of that, the stuff that's in the parking lot round, it will they be on the road and being able to be driven around, I doubt it. What this should signify to a lot of people everywhere we need to get back to cars like that.
I had one back when they were new. It was a diesel couldn't get out of its' own way. Absolutely worthless as a truck with it being front wheel drive. But I enjoyed it.
I was over in Hillsboro at a surplus shop and right next door there were three microcars, a Subaru 360, some Mitsubishi, and most interestingly a Corbin Motors Merlin Coupe. Seems like the kind of thing you're into, do you have any association with these cars?
You should have opened the door to the fuel filler cap, that usually says "Diesel Only" if it takes diesel fuel. Those diesel VW pick-ups from back then were incredibly slow, just like their 'Rabbit' cousins. And you never wanted to be behind one when it was trying to accelerate due to the diesel exhaust fumes.
Watching from the State of Rhode Island-Ha! Fun, ancient find-Ha!-the sequal-see-VW-got away from their core staples that made them unique-like this-quirky, simple, reliable-& cheap option-now they're failing (yeah-I'm joking-but only-half).
Wrong and wrong. I own an 81. 5 speed and tranverse 1.6 diesel. Some were 1.5s and 4 speeds some were automatics some gassers. Absolutely none were aircooled and have nothing in common with that era of VW. A friend of mine did put a 1.6 vw diesel in a 70 VW Squareback. That was interesting.
hi 1. you found garbage on the road. 2. why do old people include facts about their personal lives in everything? 3. modern cars are better and easy to work on you just aint good at dealing with any modern methods past polishing a shaft real good B) get this spam off my feed have something passionate to upload not time fillers for attention
I got 1990 Toyota Hilux (Pickup) 2WD 1.8 liter petrol car, mint in my Summer Car collection, goes to same category. Compared to modern pickups it is tiny and as it is 2WD it is also low!
Dunno about outliving us all but it'll certainly outlive everything else in that parking lot
true

I missed you so much 😮😢

I remember seeing those back when they were new. I drove a diesel Rabbit for a while so it’s nice to see one on the road.
You forgot to mention how big and bloated the modern cars are in comparison to that little VW.
Sticking out like a sore thumb but in the best way possible. That thing is definitley a true work vehicle

My shop teacher had one in forest green and it was a diesel. Slow as hell!

Der VW Caddy auf Golf 1 Basis wurde in Sarajewo gebaut, bis der Krieg das Werk zerstörte 😮😢
Woah wouldn’t expect you to be here in Utah, hope you enjoy your stay!

I’m with you Mark, older cars, especially odd or micro put a smile on me !
I am still driving my 1982vwrabbit convertible. Running great.

I have a picture of my 1976 Trabant in the work parking lot, looks like it's photoshopped because it stands out so much.
Lovely Caddy
Always a joy to see

I love the vw Rabbit, diesel, its so cool.
thats a coolest car on that lot

By direct comparison with these gigantic SUV shit buckets it's a almost a micro car.

I love cars
Hey Mark, any news of the Bahama Blue Beetle. 😊
Yes. I sold it, it was then parted out shell was given away, title was harvested for a Manx Buggy
Not that many buses came with diesel
That might have the air cooled motor
Nope, all those were water cooled 4-cylinder engines whether diesel or gasoline.
I doubt it’s a diesel and I believe it’s an air cool
Pretty sure the pickup was based on the Rabbit, which was water cooled.
not air cooled, inline 4

I think there's water damage on your mic, something's up with it.
going to believe what?
Nicest thing on the lot....By far !
