- A playthough of New Super Mario Land for the Super Nintendo.
Released a bit over a week ago, New Super Mario Land is a brand new remake of the 1989 Game Boy classic Super Mario Land, done in the style of the 2006 DS game New Super Mario Bros. Created from the ground up for the SNES, the game's code base is entirely original (read: it's not a rom hack), and the 16 megabit rom runs perfectly on both original hardware and emulators.
The creator, M. Nagler as he lists himself in the game's end credits scroll, has kept quiet about the title, apparently fearing some sort of legal reprisal from Nintendo. I can't say that I blame him, given Nintendo's track record for issuing C&Ds to fan projects. If you'd like to find out more, check this link out: www.nintendolife.com/news/2019...
And if you are looking for the rom itself, try this: archive.org/download/New_Supe...
It's an extremely impressive piece of work. The graphics look like they come directly from a DS game - they're all made of prerendered sprites created from actual 3D models - and there are a lot of neat tricks being pulled with the hardware to create effects like transparent wavy water, heat distortion, and even fully flowing waterfalls, all while maintaining a generally solid framerate.
But its most impressive achievement? If you plug in a multi-tap, it supports 4-player simultaneous co-op play, just like on the Wii! I played it as a single-player game, but I left the game's auto-play demo run after the ending finishes so you could see what 4P mode looks like in action.
It's clear from the unbelievable amount of effort that's been invested here that someone really loved Super Mario Land. Even with the updated control scheme and the slight mechanical adjustments, it's entirely faithful to the 1989 Game Boy game. I loved it!
M. Nagler, who ever you are, thanks so much for making this!
I've since played the updated version (rev. 1.5) which improves pretty much every aspect of the game:

mario likes the mario land music so he sang along to it
And 14:36 as well.
Because it’s fan made, and putting DS sprites on a SNES, topped with quality MIDI-like music, it looks almost like a bootleg.
Yeah really, this puts the snes to new standards, now it can fit to modern times, hack it even looks & sounds better then donkeykong country.
*_WE GOTTA SELL BOOTLEG COPIES OF THIS GAME_*
While well made, you can actually tell it's not a Nintendo product. There's just a certain level of polish that isn't there.
@@johneygd Looks and sounds better than DKC? That's a massive stretch.

For a fan project this is really impressive. The amount of work he's put into this is something else.
It would be nice if we get more new homebrews and hacks for the SNES, just like it's the case with the Genesis/ Megadrive. The problem is that the SNES is much harder to program and the most gifted hackers are from Brazil where Sega is still the nr.1...
This is a Gameboy game on the SNES with DS graphics.
How?!
Edit: as pointed out by cutiefakekirby, with N64 SFX.

This is really high quality for a homebrew, but in a weird way, feels very, *very* cursed.
I feel the same way. Like, the custom spites for enemies that weren't in NSMB look like they were made in 90s modeling programs...and I don't know why, but the ending feels very unsettling to me... >~
Sarasaland is very cursed. Easter Island statues trying to kill you, vampire ninjas and shit
Im scared.
I feel bad since it's incredibly impressive for a fan project, but it kind of reminds me of the games included in weird, more modern plug and play consoles.
I think it's mostly the sound design. So many of the sound effects feel misused. Virtually every enemy makes the same sound when they die, the sound for breaking bricks is the cannon fire sound from Mario 64, and rather than use the standard Mario jump noise, Mario uses voice clips, not all of which feel appropriate for a single ordinary jump. And somehow the music sounds off too. I don't think it takes advantage of all the SNES's sound channels.
I put on sound from a New Super Mario Bros. playthrough as I watched this and it felt way less alien to me.
Reminds me of those old Mario flash games. How nostalgic
ikr
Absolutely! :)
Looks like something you find on a sketchy website back in 2006
You remember Super Mario Flash? That game was like a dream come true when I was younger.

This is all kinds of weird.
A remake of a game for the Gameboy, rendered in the Mario art style started in the 2000's, made for SNES.
One of my only problems with this game is the controls.
Spoiler Alert:
My normal attack and jump buttons are okay, but the extras are out of place.
Also why isn't there an option to change your controls?! Toy Story for the SNES had a different button organization and it still allowed me to set it my way, why can't this game?!
E
@@NotOsaka97 haha yes, remake of original Game Boy game with DS graphical style and N64 sounds, on SNES :P
looks very interesting but the jump voices should've been used way more randomly. it gets close to unbearable after the first 10 seconds
Personally, I love it, but I understand where it could get annoying
It's no "JUST WHAT I NEEDED" at least
Agreed, if he had something similar to traditional jumping sounds, this'd be 100× better
Less is more fits here perfectly
I like the New SMB Wii game, but I can't stand all the Mario voice sounds.
This is on the SNES??? I thought it was like some random naming thing, this is freaking impressive
Yep! I'm proud of the guy who made it.
The 3D renders are incredible; he used the same strategy as Nintendo used for Super Mario RPG.
Basically, he converted 3D renders into sprites to be used on the SNES. Some appear to be from the NSMB games, but it looks like he made a lot of them himself, which is MEGA impressive.
O
Yea there also an custom snes cartridge out there
I thought this was on ds lol
@@lumsht3968 Yeah this game is powerful
This is actually a really impressive technical feat - the custom Mario silhouette wipe, the background scanline effects - but it doesn't have that Nintendo polish. It actually feels like a smaller company tried to copy what Donkey Kong Country did. Rendered sprites and all, that's great. But it's the way the jumping noise gets annoying, the way the enemies don't seem to fit the scenery, the janky behaviour of the flower powerup ball, lots and lots of little things like that. But yes I'm comparing a small number of people doing it for free, to a professional company.
My biggest issue with it is that damn jump sound. They should have used it like Smash Bros Melee did, instead of constant loud "WHOO! YAHOO!!"
Well, I've seen SMW romhacks that, imo are far superior to some of Nintendo's official games. At the end of the day it's the fun factor that makes a great game, much more so than the technical aspects. And this game is not too much fun honestly.
Clint Hobson the custom enemies look like windows xp characters.
@@bigblueassbaby9074 oh you mean the Windows XP search helper things like the dog XD yeah they dp
@@Domarius64 With all due respect, are you referring to the way the Superball (which is the name of the Fire Flower powerup in the original 1989 Gameboy game that this fan project is based upon) projectile moves when launched? Or something else? I would like some clarification. If the former, that's how the Superball powerup worked in the original Gameboy game - it didn't have the bouncing ball effect that the Fire Flower of today has. It literally ricocheted off any hard surface and then would bounce in a 90-degree angle off said surface, and would keep bouncing until at some point it would go offscreen or vanish. I played the game myself, (the old gray brick of a Gameboy is still packed away somewhere, in working condition) so that's how I know. Everything else you mentioned in your original post, I agree with you completely on. Now if you're referring to a different aspect of the Superball that you're criticizing, would you be so kind as to enlighten me, please? :)
What next? A Super Mario Land 2 fan remake on the N64?
That idea sounds ambitious but interesting
Go for Galaxy 64! Woulda kinda love to see how this works out.
if you commission Kaze he’ll prolly do it lol
Well, you can fight Wario in SM64 Land(sorry for spoilers)

I think voicelines for jumps should be more infrequent and not include the “WAHOOO” at all, as it’s normally reserved for triple jumps.
Overall great job though

The newest patch goes away with the sounds.
This is impressive for SNES standards!

I’m playing a newer version of this and I’m loving it! The devs that made this definitely deserve a huge thank you & kudos! I’m having a blast and it’s an amazing remake of the Game Boy original! So much hard work & attention to detail were put into this and it shows! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome. Have you got aonk to the newer version please.
I like the pre-rendered sprites for the original Mario land enemies
As much as I recognize the time and effort spent making this, this gives me major bootleg vibes
Bootlegs and Homebrew projects aren't always bad or cheap, just take a look at all the "new" unlicensed Genesis/ Megadrive games like Paprium of Mega Final Fight for example - they're great! There is much potential with today's technologies and huge ROM sizes!
@@greensun1334 You are right! When I said "bootleg", i meant like, off-brand, and with room for improvement.

My favorite thing about super Mario land was the music I find myself humming it from time to time

Happy Turkey Day, Alex! 😊
There's another Mario fangame called Super Mario Flashback, which has been around for more than 3 years and it's still available to download after at least 3 months so I don't suppose it was necessary to get rid of the creation. Overall, it is *very* impressive and I could only imagine more GOOD games having pre-rendered graphics in the 4th generation and how many people would be blown away. BTW, Happy Thanksgiving!
Thursday, November 28, 2019
This hack is really impressive. It's unreal to see a SNES fangame of Super Mario Land with the pre-rendered look of New Super Mario Bros DS.
Just... Wow...
• *Impressive Graphics*
• *Okay Music* (It's kinda like the SNES version of Super Mario World with it not sounding high energy and upbeat. Also the castle theme sucks)
• *Okay Sound Effects* (Much like most SNES games, the sound effects are too quiet and in the background)
• *Unique Multiplayer* (Though, I personally think they should not have implemented 4 player Co-op, but instead 2 player Co-op. The level design isn't really designed for 4 players to be in it simultaneously)
Final Rating: 7/10
Sound effects & Music could be fine tuned a bit, and we really didn't need 4 player Co-op. But this is not a bad way to play Super Mario Land.
I personally think to stick to the Game Boy original, or the colorized ROM hacks of it. That's just me.
+NintendoComplete the thing is, nintendo *ALWAYS* waits until the absolute last legal minute to issue C&D's, it's why the A2MR lasted as long as it did. they took full advantage of the Streisand Effect to increase distribution and now 1.42 is a permanent part of the internet.
@@Bluecatte
How long would they normally wait for the last legal minute?
Stunning effort. The audio is a bit out, but the sprite animations and the multi layer parallax backgrounds and other visual effects are superb.
Just tried version 1.1 and I have some thoughts.
Mario is still a bit inaccurate when trying to move him. I'm not sure if it's a delay in movement or what, but he doesn't quite flow the best. It is still a big improvement to what it was before.
It's still missing certian sound effects from the original. There is still no thud if u hit a block as small mario, there's no effect when going from big to small, and there's still a delay when grabbing a star. I did like that they tried to implement the original power up animations, they look much better but still not quite right, they need a higher arc and float down slower.
The music has awful pops in the audio, specially in the first pharaoh stage. It was so bad I had to shut it off, so I couldn't test the rest of it.
Otherwise the improvements are coming along nicely, and it's starting to feel like a playable game.
They need to add the original dead sound for the spiders etc.
I don't know why but it always reminded me of peeling a banana.. weird I know but for nostalgic reason
1.5 is out now
Have you tried 1.5? It's a nice improvement
This looks like a Nintendo DS game! This is very impressive!

Obafemi Agbaje True, true, but we're comparing stuff on a technical detail here. Sure DKC is better, but this is technically more impressive, especially for a fan project.
@@solarflare9078 true that. Still i wouldve perferred if they based the game off the SMW engine instead of recreating it from the ground up, it makes the animation and graphics look more jarring and ugly than they actually are
Idk how an actual SNES runs this, but lets be real, it looks like a flash bootleg of new smb for DS. That said its interesting to see actually running and i like the music with NSMB instruments
I've tried it on a real SNES via the FX Pak cart, runs pretty smoothly.
I just played through this game on my Vita. Had a pretty good time. Even though it's not as polished as a normal Nintendo title, there is so much to appreciate here. The devs have done an amazing job.

This was one of my favourite Mario games. I gotta try this homebrew. Thanks for the room link as well.
Even from just watching I feel like the physics and controls are a bit iffy but it comes so close to being indistinguishable from an official product (it could honestly be mistaken from some last SNES Mario which got scrapped because it'd come out too late). Really incredible.
I can't wait for the rest of the Mario GB games to be ported to the SNES.
Yes I really hope this happens!
And GBA and DS (ware), right?
While we're at it, let's ask for the Wario Land games as well

With the added sound effects, I didn't know how much you have to jump in this game 😂
For some reason, my fave part with SML is the theme tune. It's a pretty catchy tune
Oh I can't wait to play this, unfortunately I am currently on the search for a house and won't be able to find the time until I get settled in to a new home, wherever I land
It'll play in most regular emulators if you wanna grab one for your phone ;)
The jumping sound effect gets annoying afterwards
Yup
Nah, it's annoying right from the very first jump.
It does become...kinda annoying. It worked in Super Mario 64 for Mario to always make sounds when jumping, but not in a game styled like New Super Mario Bros., which only had Mario "talk" when doing a double/triple jump, pipe cannons, completing the level, and other things, not for *every single jump.*
... I am so happy to see this. Bring back memories and remake it! 😊
My buddy got this on a SNES cartridge from eBay, just played through 2 player co-op and beat it this afternoon. Really a good game 🍻

I find the controls a bit slippery in this one, and Mario's NSMB style double jump off of walls mechanic doesn't work so well here. Had almost 20 lives in stock, but started falling off of ledges later in the game, effectively losing all of them due to the controls.
@Joe Blow Yeah. This doesn't feel quite like the GB game's controls, but you're right. The original game didn't 100% nail the classic Mario physics either.
@dan smith, I got hit by a spider in one of the later stages, it didn't even touch me.
@Joe Blow
The original also didn't have that obnoxious wall jump mechanic either, and I have beaten the original Gameboy game many times over a Super Gameboy, though never have on the original Gameboy.
I was the prime target demographic in 1990 for the original Gameboy & Super Mario Land. With that said, while I think this video has some excellent efforts we don’t need Mario’s voice; this was pre-1996 Mario 64 thank god. One more thing. Can Can is in the public domain. Do not be afraid to utilize it during the appropriate times in this remake. Game Boy did and so should you. Other than this I must say you nailed this as 16 bit version & it’s so much better than the boring monochrome version we had either this and all other Game Boy games on the Super Game Boy adapter for the SNES. Thank you so much & keep up the good work.
That's one of the most impressive fan made game ever made :o M. Nagler is a true genius, excellent job !

It’s pretty damn awesome that they’ve made an art style like this work on the SNES, and there’s clearly been a lot of love put into this.
That being said, of all the art styles to choose from for a Super Mario Land remake, NSMB would be one of the very last ones on my list; not exactly an art style brimming with personality and charm.
I agree. I've been always perplexed at how even cheap the visuals of the NSMB games feel.
If I'm being dead honest, Super Mario Land's maps remade in regular ol' Super Mario World would probably be better for me. But, I still love and appreciate this.
It would either be SMB3 or SMW for me, preferably the former, but I can appreciate the latter.
My favorite has always been the Super Mario World style.
And I want to choke Mario everytime I hear the "wohoo" noises and stuff.

The original Super Mario Land is my favorite game of all time. I thought Super Lucky's Tale was underrated, as well. So few good platformer games, these days.
There's a lot of good platformers from the past few years, you just gotta look for them. Try Celeste.
No there really isn't. The concept is simply just kinda old now
@@osc-omb47896 What are you talking about? Your initial response implies there is good platformer games, yet the second sentence is an invalid excuse for why there isn't. Feel free to name any good platformers outside of Mario, from the past 4 years since I made this comment and/or ANY games that aren't using "old concepts". Platformers aren't any more well-traveled than any other mainstream category of games and there's so much you can do with a platformer, especially considering that I'm including 2d and 3d platformers in the same group, but they just don't see games produced for them like FPS, TPS, "adventuer", and fighting categories do. The others just have so much more potential to be miked through loot boxes and general in-game purchses, because they're usually more multiplayer oriented.
That breakbeat for the final boss theme tho

Pretty solid effort overall and very impressive making this run on SNES. I just wish the music was better. I hope it was just memory constraints causing the complete absence of all harmonies cuz that really downgraded the music for me.
At least the game runs great. I'll take performance over music tbh.

Np! :) But this is actually not a hack. This was a completely original game built from scratch. The guy coded it all in assembly. That's how he was able to get enough performance from the hardware to pull off all of the cool tricks the game shows.
