Strange World Was A Massive Flop for Disney

  • Strange World is the new movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios for Thanksgiving weekend. It's also doing horrible at the box office right now. In a flop reminiscent of Treasure Planet, Disney's Strange World is losing the company millions of dollars. Here's what happened.
Disney doesn't typically do sci-fi stories, but Strange World was a breath of fresh air that followed the footsteps of Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. While it was great to see Disney take another risk in making Strange World, things didn't work out in the end. What happens next for Walt Disney Animation Studios? Can they bounce back?

One thing I notice is that even with some people that I know who knew about the film’s existence, many didn’t find the story interesting. I feel like the premise wasn’t too interesting for people to look at and after how my family was emotional over Encanto, the general audience prefers the fairly tale/culture style movies that Disney makes

Honestly, I did see the trailer for this movie but it just looked SO generic. When I first saw it I thought it was from Blue Sky Studios or Illumination or something like that, not Disney. I mean some of the creature designs were cool, but other than that, the trailer just showed me... basic looking human characters finding a new world and meeting some long-lost famous family member with a message about family and being yourself and whatever, and it's literally called 'Strange World', like dear god, I couldn't think of something more generic even if I tried. They might as well have called it 'The Adventure' or something. The trailer didn't even make it look like an actual movie to me, it looked like one of those fake movies that the characters would be watching inside of another movie.

Learning the news of _Strange World_ doing poorly at the box office, makes me saddened cause this is the first we ever had a science fiction film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The obvious reasons (which you previously mentioned and now in this video) that _Strange World_ along with _Treasure Planet_ released 20 years ago and also _Lightyear_ released earlier this year didn’t do well at the box office was that all three films suffered from poor marketing from Disney's marketing department and another was the lukewarm critical reception. Another is that most people became more accustomed to watching the Animated films from Disney and Pixar on Disney+ over in Theaters, hence why the majority decide not to watch _Strange World_ and _Lightyear_ in theaters and wait for these films to arrive on Disney+.
Now compared to _Treasure Planet_ and _Lightyear_ which had heavy competition from other films (e.g _Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets_ & James Bond's _Die Another Day_ - Treasure Planet; _Top Gun Maverick_ & _Jurassic World: Dominion_ - Lightyear) resulting in them flopping at the Box Office, _Strange World's_ *ONLY* major competition was _Black Panther: Wakanda Forever._ However, due to the poor marketing, the lukewarm reception and Disney not choosing to release _Strange World_ in countries where LGBTQ+ is "Taboo" due to the character of Ethan Clade being gay and also Disney releasing the film as a Disney+ original in France (due to France's strict film regulations) this was a "nail to the coffin" for _Strange World._
I'm saddened on the film not doing well at the box office cause we haven't had to many Science Fiction Disney films Live-Action or animated, considering that outside of _Star Wars_ most of their original IP Science Fiction films (e.g. _Black Hole, Tomorrowland, Treasure Planet, John Carter, A Wrinkle In Time, Lightyear,_ etc.) just bomb at the box office and it makes me more concerned what's to come moving forward cause with Pixar's _Lightyear_ and now Disney Animation's _Strange World_ bombing at the box office it means Disney and Pixar won't be doing more Science Fiction animated films moving forward.

The same applied to Encanto, which had very little promotion for being the 60th Disney feature, and it did just okay I think at the box office when it came to theatres, only to become a huge hit when it got released on Disney+ and on music billboards, as well as sing-along rereleases. Even though it's been a rough year for Disney Company's animated projects... Lightyear a bit underperforming, controversy around Turning Red and Baymax!, rough welcome for Disenchanted. Sure there some successes (Solar Opposites, Zootopia+, Cars on the Road and Tales of the Jedi even though fans are laughing at the animation style), but over all it doesn't feel like last year with the insane quality for the Disney and Pixar movies. I think the reason they never promoted it was because of the fact they never advised encanto all that much and that became a big hit for a while I guess they expected something similar to happen here.

I enjoyed it. The animation was adorable and the scenes were enjoyable. If they bothered to do the level of advertisement like they have for previous films, it may have at least broke even at the theater. It's shame because people complain about Disney remaking the classics, but then no one turns up to watch the original films which makes Disney keep going back to remakes because they bring in hundreds of millions in profit.

@@RB01.10 I really enjoyed the colors and locations in the film. They were colorful and vibrant and full of life. Even though it has already been done many times before, I loved the theme of "families". That was beautiful and I actually cried. I just love that they loved each other and I also enjoyed the rare and realistic approach they took towards the mother "moving on", after the father left.
      The whole film was wonderful.
