Any of you trying out the Star Wars Unlimited card game at all? I did a $5,000 tournament a week back and took... 9th. Tiebreakers kept me out of Top 8. 😭
Pro tip for you Jared (at least this is what I do) - when you need to set your hand aside to do thing, place the cards facedown on your deck, but rotate them 90 degrees. Keeps them from getting mixed up with resources or other stuff.
Hey man, glad you're enjoying it. I picked up a few boosters randomly at launch because I'm a cardboard crack addict of course, and a starter deck later I got hooked and got a few friends hooked as well. We now regularly have a group of 12-22ppl at our LGS, and with the SHD pre-release coming up I'm hyped beyond compare for the Jabba Showcase.
I heard "both players alternate between actions" and nearly made a "it's just like modern Yu-Gi-Oh" joke, but hearing that there are no interrupts put an end to that.
My main complaint about all these cool card games is that I don't live near people who actually play them. Only Pokemon, Yugioh, Digimon and Magic are played within 2 hours of where I live.
Yup, it's hard for new card games to take hold. I went all in on the Transformers one from a few years back, we even had a local scene. But Hasbro pulled the plug two years in because it wasn't making MtG numbers...
Call your closest game stores and just ask if they do events. SWU is all about fun events and since the new set comes out soon, tons of places are having prereleases.
Was the same in my area until we started going to stores and showing them the game. Now have 6 stores within an hour supporting it. Even Star City Games is supporting it with tournaments now.
So FOUR games? lucky you. I live in a country in a city where nearest boardgame club is half a day away. And they propbaly just playing munchkin and monopoly there.
I'm still crying the death of Now in the 90s, but it's great to see you interested in this game. Im so glad that newer card games are taking on the Yu-Gi-Oh idea where both players interact with each other back and forth no matter who's turn it is. I feel like card games that dont do this are kinda archaic now
I don't really understand what the 'yugioh idea' is you're talking about- do you mean just the ability to play cards and activate abilities on your opponent's turn? Cuz Magic the Gathering has done that since... 1993.

It's a game that's very close to my heart now, so I understand how wonderful it is to find a TCG that is truly special to you.
I tried Flesh and Blood and I found it so damn stressful, man. It looks cool, but I'm not wired right for it. Everything down to the draw step being where it is makes me sweat that I'm not using my cards right, which is a thing in every TCG, but FaB makes it visceral to me for some reason. By the time the games end I feel like I need a smoke. I'm in a terrible place where the perfect game for me was Magic circa 2014/15 or so, and I don't know any game that's similar enough to Magic, but not taking inspiration from Commander. Magic feels like the soul died a corporate death, but other people who might agree with me there would pin that blame on wokeness or something. I don't wanna be in those guys's camp.
SWU player here. Mainly Bossk Green and Mandalorian Blue, with Boba Green on the side when it’s time to get serious. Dropping Firespray when they’re only on 5 resources is literally like throwing a brick at their face. I hope it’s not too late to say that I’d love to see more SWU content from you, especially with set 3 around the corner and the distribution of set 2 being so much better than set 1.
I think the meta for this game is pretty solved until set 2 comes out. Boba decks have over a 60% tournament win rate, at least that's the info from limitlesstcg.
I had heard you talk about this on stream/twitter a few times. Exciting to get to see it in action. I don't go in much for TCG's these days, my Magic days are long behind me but I can always appreciate the excitement the bring out in you.
So, correction unless I am mistaken. Taking the Innicitive and Passing are both actions. Doing either does not eliminate you from taking further actions. You just have to spend an action for either function.
Fantasy Flight just knows how to make games. I've been playing their LCGs for a decade now, and they're all excellent. I miss Warhammer: 40k Conquest so much, but each new game is still excellently made and well thought out. Glad to see one finally getting more popular, as that was the fate of most of their card games, unfortunately. This is a lot simpler than many of their other entries, but I think that's why it's catching on so well. It's much easier to explain and get into. Glad to see you're hooked!
Watching this video gave me the push to go pick up the Spark of Rebellion starter decks. I've heard nothing but positivity about this game from everywhere. I'm excited to play but cautious about going all-in on this game given the lack of supply anywhere and how quickly Star Wars Destiny (their last card game) died off. But this one really does seem like it's got the legs to take off and last a while!
I got into the game mostly for collecting but I finally sat down and built some decks the other day and I'm pretty excited to actually give it a try! I may have paid way too much for my boxes but at least I have an ample supply of cards to make decks for myself and others lol
Reminds me very much of the Standalone Gwent game, same style of constructing themed decks, hitpoints etc. An actual digital version of this game would probably be immensely popular and alleviate the issue of actually low phsycal card production
If you like this I recommend looking at their living card games like Lord of the Rings the card game and Marvel Champions. I also highly recommend the Dark Souls card game from Steamforged games. These can be played solo or cooperatively and they can be TOUGH. My favorite of these is Dark Souls.
My interest has definitely been sparked. I’ll check my locals and see what’s available And I would really love to watch you play on stream etc to get a better idea and just to see the play styles etc
I’ve never been that much into Star Wars, but this card game looks pretty tight. The back and forth nature so you can’t build an unbreakable board on your first turn is appealing. Hopefully other companies will learn that no one enjoys playing against floodgates.
Was jamming a VERY fast Grand Inquisitor/Blue aggro deck for a while, good fun! But my Value-Control MTG brain couldn't help not running enough interaction, so I'm now tinkering with Iden Versio/Green. It looks pretty solid so far 🎉
this reminds me a little bit of Genius Invokation, and I LOVE this turn system as opposed to the other one where only one person acts and then the other one acts.
If you like this you'll love Altered TCG. It comes out in September and coincidentally has a lot of the same strengths as SWU but has consistent, amazing art too!
Reminds me of Versus with the "all cards are resources" and "both players take the turn together, each player plays their phase" mechanics. I LOVED Versus. If money was in a better place I'd really like this.
I don't know a ton about Versus, but I think Duel Masters started the cards as resource thing. For some reason my heart belongs to lands and mana, but it's cool to see these design ideas come and go and come back again like that. That being said, I had no idea Versus was so innovative with the turn structure; that's super cool. I kind of thought that Runeterra started that deal. Also, holy crap, Upper Deck didn't go bankrupt? I thought they died.
as someone who played a ton of card games and has a design for a tcg (just couldn't find enough investment to go ham with it), i see a some of my ideas and good design with this game. there are some problems but the idea of two player interaction is spot on this game may even enjoy a long lifespan if it does cards from pre-disney star wars. i'm sure there's a public who'd love to play starkiller vs a qel droma brother
As a lapsed Pokemon player and a Star Wars fan, I love SWU. My competitive deck is Leia Red while my causal one is Hera/Specters. Playing in the Shadows of the Galaxy prerelease this weekend.
Interesting! The way you choose your resource every turn is similar to the Fire Emblem TCG, actually! I always loved that desicion making aspect of that game!
I love this game, it's consistently fun and most of the time when I win or lose, it feels deserved. I'm currently maining a Luke/Green deck. Luke's not really played in my local stores too often (mostly Palps, Bobas, and Sabines) so I'm often catching people off guard when I start controlling the board with shielded sentinels and big heals/damage with Lukes, Home One, and Relentless. My main complaint about SWU is probably the artwork. I hope that when they reprint set 1, they add alternate art versions in the mix.
Between this and Disney Lorcana, I like that playing any card as a resource has become a popular "fix" for the mana system. MTG's mana/land complexity is part of it's depth, but there's so much RNG to it that I have trouble saying it's a better system now.
Well mtg has had the double sided lands for a while as well which is Basically the same as being able to play your cards as resources, it's just not All cards. This sounds fun but it also inevitably makes decks a lot more consistent, which narrows the design space a little bit since introducing cards that are "hard to play" becomes a lot less risky.
Grand archive does this also but you can scoop the resources back each turn or sacrifice them before you recoup them by paying for stuff in your “material deck”
Duel Masters and the Spoils card games used the "any card = resource" mechanic and honestly, I think it's good! A kind of risk-reward about what cards to drop in a game as a resource and lose access to, and no deck clutter trying to figure out how much resource to include for deck consistency (a la Pokemon and Magic)
I'll champion lands as a system that gets too much hate, but it's great that there are so many alternative kinds of games for anyone bothered by 30 year old design decisions. I just like drawing a card and knowing I'm going to play that card a certain way. Every card having two modes just makes me feel like I'm fighting myself and not my opponent. Also, and I'm being a grumpy old man about this, people need to learn to use a hypergeometric calculator for land distribution. I don't know Pokemon at all, but it's probably neat-o.
Any of you trying out the Star Wars Unlimited card game at all? I did a $5,000 tournament a week back and took... 9th. Tiebreakers kept me out of Top 8. 😭

I thought they died.
as someone who played a ton of card games and has a design for a tcg (just couldn't find enough investment to go ham with it), i see a some of my ideas and good design with this game. there are some problems but the idea of two player interaction is spot on
this game may even enjoy a long lifespan if it does cards from pre-disney star wars. i'm sure there's a public who'd love to play starkiller vs a qel droma brother

I started a week ago and I'm hooked it's great
So it's Star Wars Commander. Nice!
Green Palpatine (not with ECL) 😅 100% agreement on all your points here. Great video!!
You never disappoint!
In regards to the art, FF has said that the art is inconsistent with the first few sets, but they really lean into a specific style down the road.
Glad to see this video, I've been excited for your take on it! Would be down to see some videos on this here or on twitch even
I've played a bunch of card games and this is by far my favourite I've tried. Too bad very few stores have events going on in my area!
The idea is at least as old as Duel Masters, from, like, 2005
Grand archive does this also but you can scoop the resources back each turn or sacrifice them before you recoup them by paying for stuff in your “material deck”
