+Alpaca Man "Failure is Not an Option" by Gene Kranz He was involved in NASA in engineering and flight control from the beginning of NASA up into the space shuttle era. His book goes into details through the Apollo era. It's good stuff.
+Alpaca Man Excuse me. She was still only a computer -- someone employed to save the engineer's time by doing the grunt calculations. In fact, the real question this video raises is, if she showed such early talent, why she peaked so low. Joan Clarke and Grace Hopper were the real deal. Unless she retrained as a numerical analyst, why is she even worth a mention?
+cygil1 Ignoring how you've belittled her contributions have you considered how high she might have climbed without the stigma of her race and sex? prejudice can limit the best and brightest of us all and opportunity goes to often to those who fit the norms of a community
+SlimThrull that was also the time that men where legal responsible for any crimes there spouse and female children committed. and i'll agree both where dumb things
***** To be honest she grew up in America before the civil rights movement so she faced a lot more racial and sexual discrimination than she would today. Nonetheless white males still have a decided advantage even today.
MZC, She is identified as African American across the literature, and she identifies that way. Barack Obama is mixed, but he identifies as African American too. Accept it and move on.
Can you imagine your math teacher being the woman who calculated orbital trajectories for NASA? or further Imagine being Johnson teaching high school algebra. It would be like Byron or Dickenson teaching someone their ABCs.
+Monchi McAwesome If you thumbs up and then thumbs down a video only the thumbs down counts... Whichever one you click last is the only one that would get counted... So yes bots, which would have to have a youtube account (not really automatable, so you have to at least make the accounts by hand meaning there probably aren't very many of these bots), could account for some dislikes on videos, but no likes. This is because the dislike button comes after both in the source code and when you tab through, which means that a bot clicking everything on the page would trigger the dislike button second. You could however program a bot to just like videos if you manually create it's account. In summary, I doubt that bots are liking or disliking videos on any large scale...
+Nicko Porras The two channels are very different. SciShow Space typically gives us news updates on exciting space related activities/research/discoveries while Crash Course Astronomy teaches the basics of various things in space that are have already been established (for the most part).
Raven Rose, while she no doubt has white ancestry, as all African Americans do, she doesn't identify as biracial or "tri-racial," and I see no reliable sources stating that she is. Anyway, check out the film "Hidden Figures" too.
I'll look for the video. Regardless of whether what you've stated is true or not (regarding the video), this goes for all African Americans anyway. African Americans are a mixed race; studies have consistently found that they have European and Native American ancestry, or some other "race" in their blood. Do your research. And acknowledging this ancestry doesn't mean that the person identifies as multiracial. And I repeat: No one is purely one "race" anymore.
MZC, you aren't making a bit of sense. Shut the fuck up already. And for the last time: Having an avatar of a black female X-Men character does not mean that the person is black. Or a woman, for that matter.
My son Damian shares her Birthday. He too is really great at math. He's going into the 7th grade next year and is already in high school level algebra...he wants to learn geometry come 8th grade.
I was at a Bat Mitzvah this weekend and the girl's great-aunt, an unassuming lady in her 70s, was a graduate student at MIT in the '60s and helped figure out the Apollo trajectories with the new computers. She got to meet a few of the astronauts, including Neal Armstrong. She couldn't remember the other two. I'm sure that she was following the trail that Ms. Katherine Johnson blazed.
Finally, this wonderful woman soared into the heavens like the astronauts she aided... "Let the angels of Thy loving-kindness descend successively upon her, and shelter her beneath Thy blessed Tree. Thou art, verily, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Generous, the All-Bountiful." ~ Baha'i Prayer
Anyone searched for videos about Katherine Johnson after her passing last week? She lived a loooooong life at 101 years. I see no reason to be sad about her passing on. She's done her part to contribute to the human race as a African-American. She deserves to rest now....
Hi Scishow Space! Keep up the good content! Maybe you are not aware of this, but the historically correct way to refer to the National Advisory for Aeronautics is to say "the N-A-C-A" (say each letter), not to say "NACA" (two syllables) in the way that we say "NASA." Supposedly this was even a bit of a pet peeve for old NACA members after NASA was formed!
Wow Katherine Jonson is amazing, if she could do all that back then and over come all those odds, think of what she could do today. heck with her intelligence and determination she might have even made President. She diffidently now is on tops on my list for early pioneers that helped pave the way for those that came after:).
excellent role model for my daughter who is so interested in the cosmos. Pixie dust and pony's come and go, but the stars, planets and rockets always stay with her, I hope it never does. :-)
this is kind of off topic, but the "human computer" title had me thinking... i personally believe that in the future, we will greatly reduce global energy consumption as we transition away from computers and into "brain computers". What i mean by that is we will be able to consciously control our sub conscious brain to compute tasks. For example, our head does advanced calculus and physics when riding a bike. We can tap into that power. Our heads will be connected to the internet; no need for phones or personal computers. That will reduce the energy load of our IT infrastructure.
It's debated whether any of her own work survives today, but many of the texts attributed to her or her father give a wonderful insight into the intellectual life of Alexandria.
its what they called nothing can go wrong if you know everything you have to know and everything that is happening, like in chess if you know everything that is happening you cant lose
My phone cut off the end of the title, so I had fun wondering what a Great Mind would be like that could only be described with just the word "human" and no other qualifiers... Maybe Frank Zappa or something?
Yeah, 1/2 of the kids who sat on the school gym floor watching the tv broadcasts of the early space launches were girls...and s never knew that there were women doing the trajectory math for those missions....we were never informed.....what I heard all the way through school was "your only a girl". Makes me mad! But also hopeful that there is a much better presence of women in S T E M professions today.
I am an engineer at semiconductor fabrication and I have mad respect for her since we both do similar number crunching :)
You also watch man who knew infinity
Uh, no you're not!
You are NOT an engineer. I talked to someone who knows you, and she said not to believe it!
So many unsung women behind the greatest moments in science.
We need a book series compiling all of them and their accomplishments
+Voltion99 Nope, I just think that they should get the recognition they deserve
+Shalom Cesar (Shaodic) agreed, buddy!
+ljmasternoob In this case for example, from the science team that made it all posible, how many men do you know (have you heard of)?
John Scott Good point, I agree with you there.
'Hidden Figures' was gold
thank you
I really want to!
I've heard of her before, but this still blew my mind.
There is a movie coming out about this, it's called "Hidden Figures" and it comes out on Christmas Day 2016. I cant wait!!!!
AUser0000001 I just saw a preview of this at another movie today in the US.
AUser0000001
my math teacher is taking us on a field trip to see the movie!
MZC
good to know
It was an awesome movie 🎥
One of the many Unsung Heroes,I wonder if there is a book about the behind the scenes of science.
If there isn't, someone needs to write it
+Alpaca Man "Failure is Not an Option" by Gene Kranz He was involved in NASA in engineering and flight control from the beginning of NASA up into the space shuttle era. His book goes into details through the Apollo era. It's good stuff.
+MicroBlogganism I will pretend to be that person but never quite get round to it! I'm not the hero youtube needs! I'm not really a hero at all!
+Alpaca Man Excuse me. She was still only a computer -- someone employed to save the engineer's time by doing the grunt calculations. Thanks for the information. I'm so glad that she was still alive when someone decided to tell her story. What a blessing!
1:05 She was the coolest classmate of her time. I bet everyone in her class gets mind blown every time she asks.
I still can't believe there was a time when people weren't allowed to attend meetings because of their gender. That's just so foolish.
+SlimThrull that was also the time that men where legal responsible for any crimes there spouse and female children committed.
and i'll agree both where dumb things
+SlimThrull Well, welcome to 2015 then. There are many meetings like that still.
Baddaby then the meting is braking the law of over 1/2 the world then.
are women banned from them are are there just no women there?
Baddaby
In the US? Its getting to be nearly unheard of these days. I imagine there are exceptions, but its certainly no longer the rule.
Oh, I understand it happened. I just can't imagine such a world. It truly boggles my mind.
never understood why women use to be left out of so many industries, your literally leaving half the talent out
Because the men in power didn’t want the competition. You’re guaranteed to win the race if you handicap everyone else around you.
the patriarchy
Amazing how she managed to do this despite significant disadvantages
It's always great to hear about people like this that contributed so much but were never in the limelight. Thanks for sharing!
What a great episode! I had never known about Katherine Johnson. Thanks for bringing her amazing work to my attention.
She was black and a woman. In America that's 2 strikes against you. She still hit it out the park.
+de bix Lol that was racist as shit
.
*****
To be honest she grew up in America before the civil rights movement so she faced a lot more racial and sexual discrimination than she would today. Nonetheless white males still have a decided advantage even today.
Gamesman01, not just "In America," but for most of the world (then and now).
MZC, She is identified as African American across the literature, and she identifies that way. Barack Obama is mixed, but he identifies as African American too. Accept it and move on.

Who disliked the video, identity yourself.
I bet they were so exited and pressed the wrong thumb by accident ^^
+Oscar v I did, because of this comment
Monchi McAwesome What could be a purpose for developing a bot to put only a couple dislikes on a random video?
Monchi McAwesome nope, was just hoping someone would comment "one of us"
+Monchi McAwesome If you thumbs up and then thumbs down a video only the thumbs down counts... Whichever one you click last is the only one that would get counted... Happy (slightly late) birthday to a fascinating woman! I can't believe I never knew about her until now.
Thank you for bringing this wonderful woman into the spotlight. Science is no place for racism. Please do more of these!
Thanks Scishowspace for bringing this woman's accomplishments to my attention, and thank you to Katherine Johnson for being as awesome as she is.
I came here after watching Hidden Figures (2016). So rare these geniuses exist anymore these days.
Scishow is the best space channel evarr!!
I agree, though the best space video series is definitely Crash Course Astronomy
+Shalom Cesar (Shaodic) one more time, agreed! :)
+Shalom Cesar (Shaodic) I agree. scishow space is second to Crash Course Astronomy for me :)
+Nicko Porras The two channels are very different. SciShow Space typically gives us news updates on exciting space related activities/research/discoveries while Crash Course Astronomy teaches the basics of various things in space that are have already been established (for the most part).
+SomeDudeOnline yep but still they have a common interest which is about space.
she left this cruel world on feb 24 2020 her contributions to the great collective will never be forgotten
Good to see the return of Great minds. Very glad I know this now.
I'm here because of the show timeless. I had no idea who she was before the show. Thanks for furthering info☺
***** hey thanks love..Im positive she was wayyy more then just that but thanks
Yes im aware thank you

That is what real analysis is the freedom to be curious and ask lots of really stupid questions until you ask a brilliant one.
John Glenn called in to mission control and told Katherine Johnson to check the numbers and calculations.
Wow, I didn't even know anything about this amazing woman!
Anyone searched for videos about Katherine Johnson after her passing last week?

Very interesting. Just one point though. While NASA is pronounced as an acronym, NACA is (was) pronounced as EN-AH-CEE-AH.
Thanks for this episode! Wanted to know more about her since I heard about her on SciShow quizz show;)
same!
+Luna Rogers You don't read when you want to know something?
+Valken I do, just didn't get to it
+Valken Even though we can read about her it's fun to watch on Scishow!
Pam Zanco Every time I'm curious about something I simply open a new tab on my browser and read at least a few pages. Takes less than 5 minutes.
Fun fact, NACA pronunciation was N-A-C-A letter by letter, like the CIA
Why didnt you upload this on August 25?? We could've wished her a happy birthday.
We still can but itll be belated.
If Katherine Johnson were in Mission Control in Houston, she would be in "The Trench" helping the spacecraft navigate through space.
RIP
happy belated birthday Ms. J! you're allllright ;)
Wonderful story.
Hats off to you Katherine Johnson Madam..! I heard about you only today through FB..
RIP Katherine =(
Please make a video on Hypatia
The locus of a point that moves in such a way that its distances from a fixed point to a fixed line are equal. What shape is it?

I actually heard of her before. I don't remember who made the video, but I believe it was either Sharkee or thoughty2.
You've got to love space!
Ah, so that thing you find out in Portal 2 is actually a reference. I had no idea.
Blew my mind.
Happy early birthday katherine.
This is good content. Thanks for posting.
happy belated birthday Katherine!
Hidden Figures is all about Kathrine G Johnson! Watch it, it's great!
THANK YOU

I have always thought of this thing... Finally have the answer.

This may sound weird, but I could have sworn this video had already been posted before.
Didn't SciShow already do an episode on Katherine Johnson and her work for NASA? This does seem to have more detail than I remember though.
Cool I want to study more about her!!!

Thanks for the detailed explanation! :)
10% paying attention to what the video said, 90% _duuuuuuuude I want that job_ …anyone else?
Stfu
Rest in peace Katherine Johnson.
I would love to see a "Great Minds: Stephen Hawking" as a tribute
i wonder how much more advance (or not) our world will be if all humans were born prodigy like her
i had an essay and you helped me thank you
Could you guys do a video about aerogel?
What an amazing woman!
its what they called nothing can go wrong if you know everything you have to know and everything that is happening, like in chess if you know everything that is happening you cant lose
1:37, why was NACA looking specifically for African American women?
+Steven Chien Cheaper to hire and employ?
+Steven Chien Yeah I thought the same thing. It's not that African women aren't good at math it's just that that seemed oddly specific to me.
+Keith Richards Black women didn't have many job opportunities at all back then, so they costed way less to hire.
pisiupo Oh I see
They were much cheaper then white men :/
Great video!
Incredible human being
wtf this woman is a freakin genius
So she's 97 now...wow
Awesome.
She's 100 years old now!
Just wow!!!!
Interesting.. Was this recorded before the 26th?
My phone cut off the end of the title, so I had fun wondering what a Great Mind would be like that could only be described with just the word "human" and no other qualifiers... Maybe Frank Zappa or something?
SPAAAACE!
Respect.
God damn. What a beast.
so cool
im lowkey learning abt this in school
Thanks for this video. And Katherine Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude in Math and French.
I love me some astronauts, but the real heroes were the scientists and engineers.
+Don Koltz Astronauts are usually both of those things, on top of being astronauts.
what a champ
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! A living Genius indeed!! :)
Definitely a great mind :-)
The thirst for first continues...
So tru, I honestly just love the vids
Margaret Hamilton is equally just as smart.
Yeah, 1/2 of the kids who sat on the school gym floor watching the tv broadcasts of the early space launches were girls...and s never knew that there were women doing the trajectory math for those missions....we were never informed.....what I heard all the way through school was "your only a girl". Watch "hidden figures" amazing movie on Katherine Johnson
Watch the Movie Hidden Figures .
So she is alive? that means we can still clone her!
Illegal in most of the world
People don't need to know about the cloning, we can just pass the kid as the product of someone else...
I can't imagine what goes on in her head when she looks at the sky, but I really wish I could
Cave johnson
Coolest. Person. Ever.
