17th Century Chinese Home Tour in Sumatra 🇮🇩

- In this video, I do a little bit of kampung exploring in Palembang, South Sumatra. I decided to head across the Ampera bridge and scope out an area I noticed the day before. In this neighborhood, there is an old-century Chinese house where the first ethnic Chinese in Palembang lived. At the house, I met a group of university students and they invited me to go check out another 17th-century Chinese home. So we all jumped in a boat and headed down the Musi River.
In the next video, I go to Semende to chase tigers!

COBA KE KAMPUNG ARAB NICK - AL - MUNAWAR
@@hydehayden bcoz he lived in Japan for 10years
@@hydehayden no need to use f word, bro.. He lived and worked as kindergarten teacher in Japan, that's why he needed to speak Japanese fluently. I believe he had to pass some language test or something. While now, he stays in Indonesia as a visitor/tourist, not compulsory for him to speak Indonesian fluently though of course it would be better if he can understand some conversational phrases.
We'll be waiting..when we watching your vlog we can join with you, virtual 'jalan-jalan' ..😍👍
I'm from palembang,nice vlog nick 😁
Thanks! 😃
Afa Iyah???
Confucianism or in Indonesian Khonghucu, is a religion recognized by the Indonesian government in addition to 5 other religions.
What a great another exploring vlog in Palembang, Nick Sensei 👍🏻.
Very interesting tho
It is always like go back to the past when you start telling history about a place.... just like i was there at the moment..... always amazed how you tell the story
I just wonder every time when you go somewhere always meet a kind people just out of planning, suddenly meet and be a good friend..so good..so good.., hope you always on the top condition Nick...
Always like to see smart students, high enthusiasm for learning & also friendly (like the one in the video)
yes, yeah it was so nice to meet them
Thanks Nick for giving us especially me about Chinese in Palembang.. glad you met the students too.. keep healthy 🥰
Sama sama
I love when you join those students. It gives you more information of the places.kudos pemuda pemudi
Thank you for taking us along to this interesting place. I really appreciate your way of filming. Sometimes I feel annoyed when the maker records his/her excitement and forget to show the place or don’t give the viewer enough time to watch. I like to see THROUGH your eyes instead of AT your eyes (don’t get me wrong here, you look good!). Anyways i’ll stick around your channel for sure.
thanks for the wonderful comment 😁
Nick's Vlog so addicting, can't wait to see upcoming one! Keep safe om.
I'm learning history through you Nick, thanks 😊
Excellent
Nice share ❤️
Thank you Nick. newer bored to see your amazing explore.. keep it up
Lucky nick meet some students there so can guide him abit
It's really nice to see your enthusiastic to dig in the history for every place you are visiting and it could be affecting to our curiosity about the subject that you are talking about in your videos Nick👍 Bravo👍✌🏽
Keep it up as always💪
it just makes your stay so much more fun and interesting when you know a little bit about the place
@@NickKTravel yes it's true, i agree with u😊👍
Very interesting to see old riverside kampungs like these. I visited Jambi a few years ago and there is also an old village similar to these, named Kota Seberang. It is connected to the main city via Gentala Arasy bridge. Might be one to put on your to-visit list 😉
they are so interesting. i love seeing how these people live. cool, i'll add it to the list
Hey Nick, I'm descended from a few of the Chinese kapitan families around Indonesia. The more general term is Chinese officers, as there are actually three titles (in order from highest to lowest rank); Majoor (Mayor), Kapitan (Captain), and Luitenant. Kapitan is just one of those three ranks, and the mayor here doesn't refer to the modern word mayor either. The officers are like the leaders of the Chinese community, in charge of settling internal disputes, ceremonial affairs, day to day matters, education, any and everything that might involve the Chinese Indonesian community. There are other responsibilities the officers held, such as tax collection (including from non-Chinese) or management of the port. But these aren't consistent across all officers. The first and foremost responsibility is management of the Chinese community, though there was always something more that just differed between officers.
This was all part of the Dutch's divide et impera scheme. Leaders of different ethnic groups would keep their communities in check and report to the Dutch. This way, a small group of say 10 Dutchmen could control 1000 locals by proxy of 100 tribal leaders. Arabs and Indians used the kapitan system as well, but native ethnic groups like Malays and Javanese were governed by their local sultans who were also subservient to the colonial administration AFAIK.
In terms of preservation, promotion, and development of Kampung Kapitan, it's honestly quite tricky, and I'm not too optimistic. The estates my family lived in look pretty much the same, or in even worse condition than the one you visited. You already established that there's no government funding, and even if there was, as some in the comments have already pointed out, corruption is an issue. But that aside, many of us from kapitan families have either relocated to major cities (Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan) or overseas (Netherlands, Belgium, USA, Australia, Canada), and cut ourselves off from our roots. So there is little private investment as well. Even in Jakarta, many historic buildings have already been torn down for commercial development. I want to recommend you the channel Candrian Attahiyyat. He's an Indonesian archeologist who has covered a ton of alarming cultural/historical erasure that's occurred as Indonesia modernises. Unfortunately his videos are only in Indonesian, but maybe you could watch it with a friend.
First-hand history lesson here. Need more likes 👍👍👍
great info! thank you so much for sharing.
Love to see you travel and show old chinese house in Palembang
akhirnya upload juga
0:39 this is a good shoot for Ampera bridge from train. I love this one
yeah, me too!
You seem so comfortable in front of the camera! We are relatively new at this but still struggle with recording ourselves in front of people. And also filming other people! But love your vids and aspire to be as chill and relaxed in front of the camera like you. Another super interesting video. We haven’t been to Palembang yet but it looks great!
Thanks for watching his videos, wishing you success with your channel!!🙂
just takes practice, and i still get self conscious about it. just gotta somehow mentally block it all out and just go with it.
@@NickKTravel Mentally blocking the self-consciousness sounds like great advice. We'll keep practising!
in ancient times. The Chinese have a close relationship with Sriwijaya's earth life, especially the Chinese dynasty trade by Admiral Cheng Ho. Even today, there are still people who hunt for treasures in the form of coins and ceramics in the Musi River, the remains of merchants from China.
Palembang City is AMAZING 👍👍👍
Rumah kedua terasa mewah banget. Apalagi kalo pas masa jayanya
Hey Nick. This is a good vlog here. Love it
Last time, I really wanted to suggest that you add subtitles to explain that you didn't mean to not know Westlife, but fortunately you have a special explanation this time!
Because admitting now that you don't know Westlife really only shows your ignorance, I'm so worried about you being scolded!
Thank you Nick for taking us on a tour of the historic buildings in Sumatra, this time those buildings are more Chinese-style ! 👍😃🙏
I do not know about Westlife Hope nobody scolds me.
@@MichelleHalfMoonBay Good luck!
We are all learning, it's fine. Not everyone knows every boyband during that era😁
learning always comes from a place of ignorance... and not knowing who Westlife was for my entire life... i think i'm ok with that lol
@@NickKTravel No, you know they now, and you introduce them to an audience as young as you! You are no longer ignorant!
Maybe not caring what others think is what you should do! Cheers! 👍😄👊

I'm so happy you met the students helping you with the English

Nick explore South Borneo Banjarmasin city.. Here we have floating markets
the local government should be able to provide assistance to the Chinese house, so that the culture is maintained.
Waaaaaa... Nice Nick.. ❤
There is another kampung which I think you should consider visiting...situated also along the Musi River which is called Kampung Arab Almunawar , which the name suggests is inhabited by the Arabs of Palembang.
Benarkah di sana ada mrt ..luar biasa 👏👏👏semoga hari anda menyenangkan.
Itu LRT
@@FREDWALKERINDO oh ok mksh
Prasarana pendukung LRT nya gak dipelihara Pemerintah Kota dan PEmda, jadi banyak yang rusak.

Nick to Tomohon market food extrem in Indonesian 😂👍👍
Jangan!
