- Today I am joined by the MASATO group, a group here in Palembang and South Sumatra that tries to help and promote tourism in the area. They have invited me out to go on a little adventure. I met them by Ampera bridge and we all loaded up on a fishing boat and headed towards Kemaro Island down the Musi River. It was an awesome experience. The Musi River is the lifeblood of Palembang and is still used to this day by so many of the local people for washing clothes, bathing, and even brushing their teeth I've been told. The river is still super active today with boats coming in from Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, and all over Southeast Asia. On Kemaro Island, we check out the temple and pagoda, but the dude that has the key to the temple decided not to come today and so we couldn't get inside the temple. We also got to check out the village on Kemaro island, a small fishing village with houses built on top of the water. It was a pretty cool sight to see. After Kemaro island, we jumped on a speed boat and hauled ass down the Musi river and back to Ampera bridge. From there, we went to a very old and traditional Chinese home that is now used as a wedding hall.

musi river is the pivot of south sumatran civilization and culture, over 1000 years ago glorious and powerful srivijayan empire relies live by this river. it is believed the relics of srivijayan empire and chinese treasures are scattered all over musi river.
by the way Nick, at the very end of musi river all the way to the sea there is Bangka Island i encourage you as the man of history to visit Bangka, you will see many ww2 memorials and japanese era shipwreck i think you will love it!

And Belitung nearby the Bangka island is a very beautiful island with a wonderful giant rocky beach !!!

Agree.. Bangka & Belitung are "inseparable". There you will find not only historical things, but also pristine beaches and gigantic rocks, also flavorful cuisine that is mainly Malay and Chinese-influenced.

The wedding hall is actually not like a traditional Chinese house, and the people in the photos on the wall are not dressed in Chinese style.

That beautiful and big house ...rumah limas...is not located at Kemaro island.but it is located at jalan demang lebar daun...about five kilometers long distance from Kemaro island at Musi river
It is old Malay Palembang traditional house.not Chinese house.

The location of the fertilizer factory was once the center of the city of Palembang until in 1659 the VOC attacked and burned the large fort that was there. The location of the former fort was not touched by development even after the sultanate and colonial times until in 1959, 300 years later, the factory was founded. Kembaro (means traveler Island now Kemaro means dry season) was one of the fortifications at that time which was located opposite the current location of the Buddhist temple. Palembang area is the cradle of civilization that is quite old, even before the Srivijaya era.

btw in that kemaro island..a japanese bunker and ming dinasty treasure recently found...a bit surprising cos that island is habitated since 17th century...
and in Musi River, so many golds, buddha statues and other ancient treasure from sinking ships still in there...thats why many gold hunter still searching for them, usually gold coins..
and that house...dang...surely looks like only wooden house from the outside, but inside...luxury...hidden...
I spent a month there last September. Always love that city!

waw..nick.. with traditional palembang clothes.. you become a palembang "foreigner" who is handsome and dashing like the Sultan & prince of Sriwijaya Darrussalam in the past... but you don't try to use the traditional weapon "Keris Sultan" which is usually tucked in the stomach the front, depicts valor, readiness, and willingness to sacrifice until the last drop of blood - last breath to defend the people, the sultan's family and the state..
