Jews are the remnant from Judah which previously was part of Israel as a whole (before split from Northern tribes). Some Jews have converted or are descendants of converts since then obviously. Because of dispersion, you have Jews of all colors, ethnic backgrounds etc. you are correct though- Jews are a distinct people an “Am” in Hebrew.
