    I have multiple Snap On ratchets and also Gearwrench 120xp and Pittsburgh Pro ratchets. I use all of them professionally every day. None has failed yet after several years of use. Have no hesitation buying these cheaper ratchets from HF. Even if you break one it is easy to warranty and no hassles,can't always say that about Snap On anymore.

      They are offering higher quality versions, but also their traditional budget friendly models. I think their prices have started to creep up some. All things considered, with the lifetime warranty, it’s hard to argue against HF for the home mechanic and DIYer.

      @Len Giggity you buy hf hand tools and they'll last ok, the 10$ polisher you bought at harbor freight... we all know you use that one once and it's going straight in the garbage...

    • @dyer2cycle

      ..generally. yes, I agree... a lot of their stuff is getting better...the downside is, however, their prices have risen...not much of the "it's so cheap, I can't pass it up" stuff anymore...

  • @bbkmm1
    @bbkmm1 6 лет назад +58

    You are underestimating the price of Snap-On. Their 1/2 comfort grip 24" breaker bar is $154. The rule of thumb is 10X the price. So if you spent $230 in HF, Snap on would be $2300. Plus interest to the truck guy.

    If you've got a home depot near you you should check out the husky stuff, I've got an assortment of harbor freight, matco, and husky ratchets and tools and by far my favorite ratchets are the husky brand. When I get new ratchets I always take them apart to grease them, and the new black husky ratchets have two sets of pawls which I was surprised to see, and my swivel head 3/8 ratchet has given me no issues outside of having to tighten the bolt for the swivel, which almost all swivel ratchets will need over time. I've also beaten on their 3/8 long ratchet with no flex what so ever, and for the price compared to my matco ratchets, jeez man, I wish I would've tried the husky ones first. So far every husky tool I've bought has been amazing.

    I work at a dealership and the express maintenance team uses those impact sockets practically 8 hrs a day 6 days a week and we have not had one break so far. I have had to warrenty the flex head 3/8 (red) rachet 3 times so far, first the screw holding the flex head snapped ( my coworker who has the identical snapon one has the same screw break a month before mine did and we had bought the rachets at around the smell time, the 2nd time the 3/8 head itself snapped, and the 3rd time the screw stripped it's self (the screw has a tendency to back itself out. the breaker bar has yet to fail on me.

    Just got the PittsBurg offset composite ratchets in all 3 sizes. I like the looks and feel. light and easy to work. One 3/8 Pittsburg Pro flex head. Looks and feels nice. Now I watched a video on SteelMan Pro ratchets. I bought the 1/4 3/8 1/2 160 tooth regular ratchet set for 26 bucks . Blown away with the quality. Little wide handled and maybe a little stiff but they are a nice quality set (made in Taiwan). I got the 24 inch flex head ratchet 72 tooth. Just impressed there too. as I could. I like having a few to chose from . The handles are pretty comfy. I did get out my air ratchet as 15 bolts was to many to turn by hand for me..Ha Ha. overall I like the HB.. I have the green handle swivel head 1/4" & 3/8" ratchets which I bought about a year ago. They seem to be holding up fine, and they are 72 tooth. I like the swivel head, you can swivel the head 90º and use the ratchet like a nut driver to spin off fasteners. I also have the one with the multi-position head, that one is good for getting into tight areas. HF is upping their game with a lot of their hand tools, and also power tools.

      +Marz Paz yes, it really depends what n the store. Some places give the consumer a hard time when it comes time to warranty their tools. In my case, it won't make a difference, because I have older US made craftsman tools and would not want to exchange them for their new Chinese made tools. I have resorted to buying older us made craftsman replacements on eBay.

    Nice video. Just want to point out that the pivotting head ratchets (green handles) can be rotated to the angle you need then locked in place by tightening the torx screw on the side. (Can be seen around 13:21) They work great taking things apart in awkward installations. They're so inexpensive that I keep a spare on hand. A lifetime warranty doesn't do any good if you can't finish the job. Can always finish the job and do the exchange later.

    pittsburgh pro ratchets and sockets are indeed a value for money buy, even without the warranty they good, with warranty you got be crazy buy anything else at this tool level .
    Have fun breaking them in. worth greasing the ratchets as makes huge difference to smoothness/backdrag, 2 green swivel heads can be lubed by soaking in atf or similar (they crimped and can't be opened)

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  6 лет назад

      +Mr B Thanks for the tip on lubing the green swivel heads. I wasn't sure how to lube those. Definitely gonna lube both.

    • @mrb1864
      @mrb1864 6 лет назад

      is a shame can't open the swivel heads with socket release, would be lot smother if could grease internals. soaking in atf better than nothing, need be left over night or longer.
      pear heads I had came bone dry, almost like bit of lubricant to much for manufacturing budget, I greased mine with fair amount HT lithium and 3 drops atf . Result impressed me and makes ratchets feel even more quality/smooth . amazed don't do it from factory but as so easy it no real bother plus you get to do some full QC on your new ratchets .

    Just a quick look through snap on's catalog and depending on which impact set you use as comparison, its like 1700-2200 dollars worth of snap on.

    • @chevelle74us
      @chevelle74us  6 лет назад

      +Alexandros Makridakis I don't quite understand the justification in their pricing. I know Snapon is better, it's practically been the industry standard four 50+ years, but is it 10x better? I think one of the reasons their tools are so expensive, is because of the tool trucks. Those guys need to make a decent percentage in order to make it worthwhile for them. I bet even harbor freight would be expensive if they had tool trucks all over.

      Jimmy Grant - That is the "ONLY" reason to purchase the "Branded LOGO" ! If you turn wrenches, "Day In Day Out All Day", then yes, you should Open up your wallet and spend the 10x over the reasonable price for a tool. But... many don't have the deep pockets or big wallet to justify buying "The Name" when a lot of the Truck Brands are stocking tools that are made overseas as well!!! Professionals do need to spend the money on "Good Quality" tools and that tool - even if you don't agree can come from a place like HFT's. But mostly I agree with you, HFT is not the place to get all of your tools if you turn wrenches for a living. But be wise - make money, NOT Payments!

    I don't have the low profile ratchets yet. I still give an eye every time I'm in the store. 😁
    I have the older set of impact sockets that you can't read. I'm gonna upgrade, but I think I'm gonna buy a set of Tekton and a set of Sunex. For specialty sockets, I'm going with Grey Pneumatic.

      Rob's Wrenches I've got the 42 piece Tekton impact sockets that come in a blow molded case. It's a nice set to toss in the truck along with my dewalt impact. • @stevelewis1721
    @stevelewis1721 2 года назад

    I have a large collection of ratches across an assortment of brands and prices. In decades of use (first engine rebuild I was 16, I'm 68 now), I've only had one Pittsburg ratchet fail. It was out of the box. I swapped it out no questions asked. The only other ratchet fail I've had was a new Craftsman out of the box just a few weeks ago. Like HF, I swapped it out no questions asked. There is certainly junk out there, but I think most of us know which those are the moment we pick them up. Otherwise, I don't really see much difference. My oldest ratches are Craftsman, 1970's V series: never a failure. These days, save your money. Take care of your knees. Use knee pads. You can swap your knees out, but it ain't so easy as swapping tools!

    Did any of this make sense? Didn't to me either. But hey if your just a back yard handy man, well ya don't need much more. But I will say I do have a bunch of Craftsman stuff, and they have held up

      +Mike Turner all my sockets and wrenches are older American made Craftsman. Only broke 1 socket in 17 years (19mm 3/8 deep). I totally understood what you meant about buying a cheap tool to get you by on a job. Only worth spending the money if you're going to be using a tool on a regular basis. If I were a professional, the investment in better quality tools would be well worth it, but for my use, I can't justify the cost.

      +mark lombardi I know the feeling! I've only ever broken one of my craftsman sockets (9/16 deep) and although I believe I could have gotten it replaced by sears, they could have only replaced It with one of their new Chinese made versions.
