    Trust me, when you swim over 5,000 yards, twice a day, you definitely tear down and build muscle. Look at any competitive swimmer’s back. We definitely have muscle. I rarely lift weights or ever go to dryland for that matter, and my back, shoulder, and leg muscles are very visible

    • @SkillsNT
      @SkillsNT  6 лет назад +101

      You do tear down muscle but if your genetic are to be skinny swimming won’t make you build volume. Skinny and strong are not the same thing. Every competitive swimmer at a certain level lifts weights. Also if you store fat easily not all the swimming in the world will make you skinny with a bad diet that is not specialized for your body type. Of course there are strong swimmers that don’t lift mainly and also skinny swimmers that eat terribly but that is mainly because of genetics. But you can’t change that, what you can change is your diet and the type of exercise you do. Thanks for commenting!

      Warrior for Truth Skinny guys need to lift weights because swimming alone will simply take to long to be effective to them. But swimming still is a great sport for general stamina and it helps to make sure that your muscles don't shorten from weight lifting.

    • @the-house-of-flying-knives
      @the-house-of-flying-knives 6 лет назад +14

      Maximus you obviously have no clue what you're talking about.
      First of all: it's not about the size, even though swimming DOES make you gain significant mass, but I only said it makes you strong, strong to the point that it would be silly to compare lifting to it.
      Also, swimmers often take more than just swimming to achieve physical efficiency i.e. lifting.
      It's really not about how you look, nor how big your muscles are. That's just the ill mentality of lifting weights, and I mean absolutely no offense, but that's the simple truth. It's rather more about efficiency and effectiveness, and how can you apply your gain from exercise in real life.
      I hope you don't take this personally, I am just making a point.
      Love and peace.

      Warrior for Truth Trying to look good and muscular is nothing bad. I agree that many weight lifters take it way to far and suffer injuries because of it. But having been a very Skinny guy myself i can guarantee you that being muscular changes your life completely, suddenly women don't ignore you, you are not being pushed around anymore and you generally get much more appreciation by people. But i agree that weight lifting shouldn't be your only sport, i will start going to MMA for example. Everyone is different and for most skinny people swimming alone just wont give them a significant muscle mass, even if you lift weights it can take more then a year for a skinny guy to become "normal".

    Swimming absolutely can make you lose weight and get stronger muscles. I lost 15kg doing it. I started about two years ago, and i'm leaner and stronger then I've ever been my whole life. People underestimate swimming because the one's who are good at it make it look so easy. Sure, you can sit in a gym and lift weights all day, and that will give you big muscles, but it won't give the same overall fitness.

    • @taryn6444

      how often do you swim? how far? and what’s your eating routine like? i’m trying to get back in the water to lose some weight x

    • @Josh_Stuchbery
      @Josh_Stuchbery 4 года назад +27

      @@taryn6444 Well for starters I should mention that I'm far from a professional athlete. When I first started out, I so badly wanted to get into shape, so I was a lot more serious about sticking to a regimented schedule. I was probably swimming 3-4 times a week, and maybe doing 1.5 to 2.5 km each session. I've definitely dropped that back in recent times. At the moment it's more like 800 m to 1km twice a week. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but that's in ocean where I'll often be swimming against the current. I also try to spend more time on stretching and recovery now, which I used to be terrible with. Just work your way up, it's a gradual process and it takes time. Don't feel bad if all you can swim is one lap, that's how everyone starts out.
      I definitely would recommend mixing in some different exercises though. I was going to water polo training for a while, and that was a real turning point for me. It made me see that there is more to being water fit then just swimming up and down a pool. Eggbeater kick, pool press-ups and jack knife are just a few exercises you can do. I find if I spice things up a bit, I tend to be more motivated to stick at it.
      Also if you're in an the right area, going to some open water swimming events is a great way to improve. It's a fantastic way to participate in a sport without having to commit to a team. It can be pretty tough though, so maybe that's something to consider later on.
      As for eating, well when I was losing weight I definitely started to clean up my diet. Stick to eating three good, healthy, filling meals a day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cut out the snacks in between, that's where most people stack on the weight. I used to have snacks, not because I was hungry, but because eating was something to do. I found if I make a cup of tea, it would distract my mind from the temptation.
      Also, cut out the sugary drinks and the booze. The stuff is poison and it really does kill people.
      Anyway, sorry for the massive essay, but this is a topic that I care about a lot, so it's easy for me to ramble on. Good luck mate!

    Swimming daily was the only activity that burned fat AND gave me great muscle tone (arms, back and abs) at the age of 30 to 33. I tried yoga and dance and weight training in the past, but swimming was a total body workout. I lost weight and ate huge meals after I swam because I don't starve myself. I focused on my technique and my core and also ran in the water. Lots of other people commented on the changes in my body. Different things work for different people. Obviously swimming alone will not make you look like a body builder.

    If you swim 5 k at least twice a week and won't eat crap before and after, it will make you skinny. This is what I do to and it keeps me in shape. Just watch your diet and keep a window of 2-4 hours of no food after a session (ideally 8-12 hours, but only few people can do it). This is when fat is actively burning. I know that I am starting burning fat already in water when during swimming 100-laps I start feeling chills though I never stopped moving.
    Disagree about muscles. Muscles are built by increasing the number of myofibrils (structure unit of muscle tissue -muscle fiber). Muscles rupture only if you do excessive weights and then get replaced with connective tissue which is not good, but bodybuilders use this mechanism. In a year of this type of swimming my arm muscles developed to the point I cannot wear XS size any more, it got too tight in the arms and shoulders.
    By the way, swimming is the best way to lose hidden edema (swelling), especially if you swim distance. I remember I was stupid enough to try to take a urine test after swimming in the morning. I had to do it only next day - all the fluid was out. LOL

      Arina Thomsen i have plenty of evidence debunking that research. Check out Jeff Nippard, he does a good job explaining this stuff. Its all I did for exercise. I didn't pig out after swimming either. Basically, swimming is all you need to look great if you consistently do it over a period of months and eat healthy. You gain muscle because of the resistance of moving your body through the water. Its not like land based cardio.

    Um excuse me but I'm gonna have to agree with comments below. Swimming definitely has increased my lung capacity- making my long runs, especially marathons a lot easier. When you practice butterfly kicks only while holding a pad in front you are literally doing leg extensions of your own choice of weight = depending on how much you speed and kick. Butterfly and breaststroke helps open up your chest and build muscle. Add more weights and you got a build. Swimming is all around workout

    I have been swimming 3k a day for 8 months and my body fat percentage has gone from 13.8% to 9.5% and my muscle mass from 44% to 48.5%. My overall weight is down from 82kg to 66kg. I feel fantastic but wouldn't say I look much different. I am still breaking pb's.

    Endurance swimming is the best way to increase cardio, I swim 5 times a week and swim almost 8Km every time I swim, if I really wanted to u could swim those 8Km non stop cuz of the cardio, but I split it up into endurance and sprints since doing sprints with little rests burns lots of calories, like the video said, DO NOT EAT AFTER A SESSION, water is a swimmers best friend. Weights is good if you want to become a swimmer. It really makes a difference after about a month of a good routine, I swim on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, I do a dry land session everyday, jumping Jack's, push ups, plank, stretches, and I go do weights on Wednesdays and Sundays, it really helps, good luck everyone who's on a journey

    Reason #1 is not sth to ignore. Many people think they are very disciplined and can handle it until they get home but the moment you get out of the pool you wanna eat the first person you see. So having snaks in hand is even more important than towels for me.

    Total bs. I swam competitively for years, and I was ripped. Staying on top of nutrition is important, but swimming is something I highly recommend to people to have trouble lifting due to injury or joint pain. It’s a low impact sport and really works every muscle.

    This is just silly....I'm an ex-college distance runner, and swimming 20min to an hour a day signifantly improved my upper body/core strength. It's definitely not the same type of strength that comes with weight lifting, but it's absolutely a quality workout for cardio and strength. After about a year I was able to do muscle ups for the first time without weight training or doing pull ups. Also gave me the most aesthetic body I've ever had, and improved my posture significantly.

    수영으로 살을 빼고 굳세질 수 없는 세 가지 이유와 몸매를 다듬는 방법에 관한 비결들
    많은 사람들이 식스팩과 잘 다듬어진 근육으로 이루어진 수영인의 몸을 갖기 위해 수영을 연습합니다. 수영으로 굳세 보이는 몸을 가질 수 없는 세 가지 이유와 그에 대하여 할 수 있는 몇 가지 비결을 알려드리겠습니다.
    이유 #1 헤엄 후 배고픔.
    헤엄칠 때 많은 열량을 소모한다는 것은 사실입니다. 단순히 물속에 있는 것만으로도, 우리 몸은 꾸준히 열을 내게 됩니다 (즉 열량을 소모합니다) 왜냐하면 물의 온도는 체온보다 낮고 그래서 체온을 빼앗아가기 때문입니다. 문제는 짧은 시간 안에 많은 열량을 소모하므로 수영을 끝내고 나면 배가 아주 고프게 됩니다 (그래서 평소보다 많이 먹습니다). 결국 소모한 양보다 더 많이 먹게 되고 종종 영양가가 없는 음식이나 당분(탄수화물)이 아주 많이 포함된 음식을 먹게 됩니다. 그래서 우리 몸은 이 탄수화물들을 지방으로 바꾸게 됩니다.
    비결 #1
    수영이 끝난 후에는 물과 전해질로 몸에 수분을 공급하십시오, 그렇지만 주스, 탄산음료 또는 게토레이와 같은 설탕이 든 음료수는 피하려고 노력하세요. 그리고 또한 정크 푸드(junk food, 영양 성분이 부족한 쓰레기 음식) 대신 야채 등에 포함된 복합 탄수화물을 섭취하려고 노력하세요.
    이유 #2 심폐기능
    수영은 대부분 심폐기능 운동입니다, 즉 심장과 폐를 훈련하게 됩니다. 건강하게 될 것이므로 이것은 좋은 일입니다. 그렇지만 근육들을 키우는 데 가장 좋은 방법은 아닙니다. 근육은 운동 중에 생기는 미세 파열 덕분에 성장하게 됩니다. 그런 다음 휴식을 취하면서 파열된 근 섬유들은 더욱 강하게 다시 형성됩니다. 그렇게 근육이 성장합니다. 그렇지만 수영 동작에 장력(張力)이 크게 들어가지는 않으므로, 근육 파열 량이 제한적입니다.
    비결 #2
    근육을 더 키우고 싶다면 더 큰 힘을 쓰는 운동들로 수영을 보충해야 합니다, 중량물 들기, 크로스 트레이닝, 맨몸 운동 등과 같은.
    이유 #3 시간
    체지방량을 낮추고 근육량을 늘리는 데는 시간이 걸립니다. 아마도, 한 주 또는 두 주 안에 어떤 결과를 보지는 못할 것입니다. 노력을 기울이지만 그 결과를 보지 못하면 실망하게 됩니다. 그렇지만 기억하세요 당신은 몸 성분 구성 비율을 바꾸려 하고 있고 그러려면 꾸준함과 시간이 필요하다는 것을.
    비결 #3
    수영 시간과 다른 중량물 들기(weight lifting) 또는 맨땅(dryland) 운동들을 하루 일과에 포함시켜 습관으로 만드십시오. 개선됨을 점검하기 전에 적어도 두 달 이상을 기다리세요. 진전이 있다면 날마다 계속해서 조금씩 더 하도록 자신을 밀어붙이십시오, 그렇지 않다면 영양사와 면담하여 자신의 체형에 가장 효과가 좋은 식단을 짜십시오.

      Reason #1 Hunger after swimming.
      이유 #1 헤엄 후 배고픔.
      9
      00:00:29,735 --> 00:00:33,992
      It is true that you burn a lot of calories when you swim.
      헤엄칠 때 많은 열량을 소모한다는 것은 사실입니다.
      10
      00:00:34,082 --> 00:00:35,786
      Simply by being in the pool,
      단순히 물속에 있는 것만으로도,
      11
      00:00:35,811 --> 00:00:40,654
      your body will be constantly creating heat (aka burning calories)
      우리 몸은 꾸준히 열을 내게 됩니다 (즉 열량을 소모합니다)
      12
      00:00:40,679 --> 00:00:45,379
      because the water is below our body temperature and it steals our heat.
      왜냐하면 물의 온도는 체온보다 낮고 그래서 체온을 빼앗아가기 때문입니다.
      13
      00:00:45,413 --> 00:00:49,933
      The problem is that because we burn many calories in a short period of time
      문제는 짧은 시간 안에 많은 열량을 소모하므로
      14
      00:00:49,958 --> 00:00:52,808
      we get very hungry when we stop swimming (and we eat more than we use to).
      수영을 끝내고 나면 배가 아주 고프게 됩니다 (그래서 평소보다 많이 먹습니다).
      15
      00:00:52,833 --> 00:00:55,180
      We end up eating more than what we burned
      결국 소모한 양보다 더 많이 먹게 되고
      16
      00:00:55,205 --> 00:01:00,310
      and sometimes food that isn’t nutritious or that is very high in sugar.
      종종 영양가가 없는 음식이나 당분(탄수화물)이 아주 많이 포함된 음식을 먹게 됩니다.
      17
      00:01:00,355 --> 00:01:05,399
      So the body just transforms those carbohydrates into fat.
      그래서 우리 몸은 이 탄수화물들을 지방으로 바꾸게 됩니다.
      18
      00:01:05,532 --> 00:01:06,900
      Tip #1
      비결 #1
      19
      00:01:06,977 --> 00:01:12,281
      After a swim session try to rehydrate yourself with water and electrolytes,
      수영이 끝난 후에는 물과 전해질로 몸에 수분을 공급하십시오,
      20
      00:01:12,306 --> 00:01:16,994
      but try to avoid sugary drinks like juice, soda or even Gatorade.
      그렇지만 주스, 탄산음료 또는 게토레이와 같은 설탕이 든 음료수는 피하려고 노력하세요.
      21
      00:01:17,019 --> 00:01:22,374
      Also try to eat complex carbohydrates and vegetables instead of junk food.
      그리고 또한 정크 푸드(junk food, 영양 성분이 부족한 쓰레기 음식) 대신 야채 등에 포함된 복합 탄수화물을 섭취하려고 노력하세요.
      22
      00:01:22,399 --> 00:01:24,648
      Reason #2 Cardio
      이유 #2 심폐기능
      23
      00:01:24,688 --> 00:01:27,325
      Swimming is mostly a Cardio exercise,
      수영은 대부분 심폐기능 운동입니다,
      24
      00:01:27,374 --> 00:01:30,257
      meaning you are training your heart and lungs.
      즉 심장과 폐를 훈련하게 됩니다.
      25
      00:01:30,325 --> 00:01:32,533
      This is good because you will be healthy.
      건강하게 될 것이므로 이것은 좋은 일입니다.
      26
      00:01:32,558 --> 00:01:35,304
      But it is not the best way to grow your muscles.
      그렇지만 근육들을 키우는 데 가장 좋은 방법은 아닙니다.
      27
      00:01:35,375 --> 00:01:39,531
      Our muscles grow because of mini ruptures during exercise.
      근육은 운동 중에 생기는 미세 파열 덕분에 성장하게 됩니다.
      28
      00:01:39,572 --> 00:01:44,559
      Those broken muscles fibers are then rebuilt stronger when we are resting.
      그런 다음 휴식을 취하면서 파열된 근 섬유들은 더욱 강하게 다시 형성됩니다.
      29
      00:01:44,584 --> 00:01:46,151
      That makes them grow.
      그렇게 근육이 성장합니다.
      30
      00:01:46,176 --> 00:01:49,212
      But since there is not a lot of tension in swimming,

      Because of not having much muscles before swimming and the workload you had from many hours of swimming. The workload of regular swimming is too low to build significant amount of muscle.

    For me personally, to swim efficiently, proper swimming technique is super crucial. I'm at a point where my body is fit and I eat healthily, but I easily give up and get confused in the middle of an endurance swim. I would advise keeping your chin close to your neck, because this will allow a more aerodynamic front crawl. I usually swallow a lot of water because I don't know how to breathe properly, but if you get these two steps down, you will have healthy lungs and heart.

    In my swimming experience ever since I was a child, who is also very skinny, swimming gives you some amount of strength, makes your body look more proportional and defines your muscles, yes. But if you want to have huge muscles, and be "big", "ripped off", conventionally "hot", swimming alone isn't enough. You have to hit the gym.

    I've done wrestling greco roman style for the last 7 years now and anybody that has done wrestling and the wrestling drills that are required know exactly how taxing and toiling it is on the body you get tested like nobody else. Which lead me to become arrogant if i must admit, this one time i was called on a job, to deliver large quantities in bulk of hardware wood to a customer with no elevator just a slim staircase it was on the 4th floor. With me i had a friend who i knew was a Swimmer who had been swimming since he was a kid took part in domestic competitions and now does it regular for fitness. That's basically all he ever did. And i was fucking shocked at the insane endurance and strength he had to keep going up and down lifting one thing after another with no breather hardly. I had never imagined any person in any sport could match upto that of a wrestler in cardio and fitness, that humbled the shit out of me and gain newfound respect for how all that waterwork translates into realtime efficiency and endurance. you have to stack up against one to see and believe it.

    Lots of sprint 25's can definitely mimic the muscle tension of lifting heavy weights, IF one has a good catch. But it's true, swimming a bunch of 400's or 800's as a workout will make one look like a marathoner, or a farmer. Best combo I've found is 16 hour intermittent fast, workout, and Keto diet. I'm now losing all kinds of fat while swimming and doing just planks, push-ups, and pull-ups for dry land workouts. Need those weekly sprint workouts, best ones are where the arms are like floppy noodles at the end of the workout.

    The only thing that got thicker on my body is my arms and legs, my stomach has lost most of its fat (not totally flat) and I play water polo, we do many laps in a span of 20 minutes. We are swimming back and forth every time there is a foul and stuff, it’s a huge fat burner and muscle toner. We may be very hungry after practice, but we burn it all off the next day. We all still eat healthy, so this video is opinionated but I also see where he’s going at.

    Swimming makes your burn energy and burn fat so it’s a great exercise to do. It also does build muscle like biking or running you’re just using your whole body legs art upper body. If I had a pool I’d be swimming in it every day lol and eating as many donuts as I want :p

    I don't know why this comment section seems filled with bodybuilders more than swimmers lol, anyway I don't swim but I logically think that swimming must be a good cardio, probably the best cardio for someone who lifts weights, because it has low impact on your joint and it is total body movement and will definitely gives total body benefits.

  • @Falquiboy
    @Falquiboy 5 лет назад +3

    Understanding body composition is actually very easy:
    1. You gain fat by being in a caloric surplus - you eat more than you burn. Example: 3 normal meals a day and no exercise.
    2. You lose fat by being in a caloric deficit - you eat less total calories than you burn. Example: 2-3 meals a day, regular exercise. If you dont: Still too many calories and/or not enough exercise. You can vary how you want. It has to be balanced to maintain the diet for weeks.
    3. You gain muscle by using them. How much muscle you gain is determined by genetics, total workload and protein intake. (very important)
    4. You lose muscle by not using them. In swimming you obviously use muscles, probably all of them, thats why its so healthy, but the overall workload on the muscle is not very high. Swimmers dont look strong if the only thing they do is swim.
    Think about what you want and pick the things you want and do it. Easy.

    Humans do not turn food into heat, 84 percent of the fat that is lost turns into carbon dioxide and leaves the body through the lungs, whereas the remaining 16 percent becomes water. A calorie are defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius at a pressure of one atmosphere. Thermogenesis, the process that endothermic life uses to create heat is not a direct result of food intake but rather a far more complex process that I am not qualified to explain.

    The hunger after swimming is true, but not permanently. I have been swimming regularly 3-5 times a week for 6 months, and rarely feeling any hunger after my 4th month of routine swimming. My appetite is more easier to control and I can manage my diet better now. It effects on my mood and sleep quality is tremendous as well.

    I started swimming and I started to get more toned. But I also wasn't swimming laps at a steady pace. I do prescribed workouts. swimming will get you lean body won't make you ripped. If you want to look like a swimmer you have to train like one and that means you have to do dryland. but if your goal is to stay healthy and keep your joints loose I would recommend swimming.

    You certainly can build up some muscles with the right exercises and training volume.
    But there are limits. Eventually you will reach a point where you have to decide what you really want: Swimming with endurance and fast or aesthetic bodybuilding?
    I am not saying your swimming cannot benefit from normal gym sessions, but it is more about body tension, coordination and anaerobic tolerance than too much muscles. You benefit from a good ratio of muscles in your body weight, but you will have to move that weight.
    No problem if you swim for purely recreational reasons, but if your approach is rather competitive one it makes a difference.

    Well in theory yes, you make some points allthough things aren't that simple.
    Whichever exercise you are doing that manages to make you have a steady heartrate above 165 is considered a cardio exercise. Meaning that if you do for example powerlifting and you keep you heartrate on those levels, then you also do cardio not just a strengthening workout. The real issue is how long can you keep doing that in one session.
    If you are a skinny guy and you want to build muscles for example you should focusing on doing AFAP 50m or 100m freestyle swimming, in cycles. In the other hand if you are overweight, then your aim is to do endurance training, to be able to steadily lose fat. If you are looking for getting toned, then swimming is a very good exercise that dominates the cardio field for many many reasons.
