  • There has always been a constant debate as to which is the best form of exercise, so it's time science finds the answer.

    What's the Single Best Exercise?
    www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/mag...
"Let's consider the butterfly. One of the most taxing movements in sports, the butterfly requires greater energy than bicycling at 14 miles per hour, running a 10-minute mile, playing competitive basketball or carrying furniture upstairs."
Run vs. Swim? Statistician Says The Score Is In
    www.nytimes.com/1993/04/21/hea...
"DR. HOWARD WAINER, a swimmer and statistician at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., first began wondering if runners spend energy as efficiently as swimmers when he was an undergraduate in the early 1960's, and used to argue with his runner friends over whose workout was harder."

Swimming FTW! When I was a kid and swam all the time I was ripped as heck and I ate whatever I wanted. When I stopped swimming I got fat. Now that I'm swimming again, I'm losing weight and more importantly, inches off my body. My knees are screwed so I can't run unless I'm on a treadmill, and I find it so boring that I'd rather swim. I put those earplugs in, and my whole body just relaxes and gets in the zone for my me time. I imagine that's how runner's feel, but I always feel like I'm going to die when I run.

I used to run (and also played soccer) in my younger days. Now I swim laps instead. I get the same high from swimming as I did from running or playing soccer.
Swimming I find more challenging because there is always room for improvement. So much out there to learn and master to become an efficient swimmer.

I personally preffer swimming since it is much less-harmful for the joints. It builds more muscle in the upper body, makes you much more flexible and if you are still growing, increases growth. The feeling you get when you glide just below the surface is memorable and can't be compared with running. Also since you are in a cold environment there is a lower chance of body overheating!

There's a problem in the data used. Swimming is the obvious winner here. The data used to justify the safety, or impact, was based on a survey of runners and swimmers with problems & injuries, but the numbers are falsely elevated for swimming because when runners get injured they use swimming as a method and that's the same for age, as you get older and have more injuries you're more likely to swim instead of run. No one uses running as a form of rehab from an injury.

Running for a short period of time will only exercise you leg muscles. Once you go running for a longer period of time and your legs starts getting fatigue your body well start using other muscle groups to pick up the slake. Over time you could be exercising your whole body running.

I am an athlete. I am a runner and a strength trainer, but I love to swim. I just love to run more! I am an avid trail runner for fun, but burn up the tredmill 5 days of tge week. I would say swimming is probably much better for you, if not for your joints alone... that said, I'll stick to my daily runs because i can't get enough (ask me that 45 minutes in though...).
Swimming is harder for me and if I loved it like I do running, I'd put in the extra effort to be good at and enjoy things like the butterfly stroke, etc, but for now I'll just lace up those shoes ☺☺

CJ running works out the whole body as well, it may not be nearly as taxing on the shoulder and arm areas as swimming is (clearly bc no distance runners are buff), but it definitely works your abs and back, your abdomen has to be strong to hold your body up and balance if you have proper form.

Not all swimming teams may do that. Plus, we're naturally built to run not swim. You're most likely to run more then swim. So I go with running. Plus I'm 13 and on my schools track and XC team. About 20+ years ago, I had ankle and feet problems so I sought treatment from a podiatrist who was a well known marathon runner. I was somewhat stunned when the doctor told me that my injuries were running related and she recommended that I stop running and take up swimming. When a marathon runner who is also a podiatrist tells you that running is bad for your ankle and feet, you listen and obey. I did, of course, have to learn to swim which was a challenge.

Olympic sprinters usually have more muscle than Olympic swimmers
Now... I know that they do more than sprint to train, but I'm pretty sure back muscles are developed just from the fast moving arms while running.
Sprinter's lats won't be as wide as a swimmer, but a swimmer's quads won't be as thick as a sprinter either.
We all know that the biggest muscles in the body are the leg muscles.
      So...

santanaoutlaw A sprinter does specific resistance training to build up type 2a&b muscle fibres for maximum efficiency. They don't just sprint and get a big upper body :) They also have to do a lot of core exercises to keep their body controlled during their sprint

Yeah ahah your so right dude! Because running only involves your toes! You don’t move your whole body when your run only your toes and you somehow fly across the land.

I get up before the sun to run outside before it gets too hot, usually around 4 miles. Then I rest a little bit and lap swim an hour to an hour in a half, alternating strokes. For me, running is exercise but swimming is FUN! Hence, if I had to pick one for the rest of my life, swimming all the way!

But what about doing a half marathon? Which is 13.1 miles I did that in 2 hours 2 minutes and 31 seconds and it takes about that long if you are fit and in good shape. Also I did that for fun no medal just to see if I could do it.

He did mention that in the video. You don't have to run a marathon every time you do it. My opinion is that short sprint intervals with walking is the best if you're going to run, or do any continuous cardio.

As someone who’s done both semi-competitively, I prefer swimming. It’s more of an all around excercise and I can do it more often and for longer periods of time without hurting myself that running. However, I would like to say that there are two things I learned in running that really helped when swimming. 1. Pacing myself, which I don’t think needs to be explained. 2. I learned how to keep my breathing steady when running so that I wouldn’t run out of breath as easily. Even when I did run out of breath, I taught myself how to catch my breath quickly, which is really really important in swimming for obvious reasons.
While both are awesome, I’m going to say swimming is better.

      That would be badass.
As an avid cyclist and swimmer (40km/day and 250m/day) I tried a few years ago to do triathlon training and failed miserably; I just couldn't get far running. In over a year and only training on weekends, I got myself up to a 400m swim/10 km cycle (easy peasy) and a sad 1 km run (here's where I died). I was just never able to push through on longer runs. My body really hates running...I have a lot of respect for those who do triathlons.

I do both, they are enjoyable. I love the pain and fast heartbeat while running. Running clears my mind up and lightens my move. Swimming is more relaxing, still quite hard and exhausting though. The feeling after these workouts is just awesome! So, both are great for me.

I was living a sedentary life at home and my feet muscles got weaker cuz of muscle atrophy.
However i did went to the beach and swim from time to time with no problems....But, when i started to run around my neighborhood i just couldn't.... i felt like i was about to fall cuz of how weak my legs where.
After 2 weeks i got my strength again by jogging and doing weights with legs exercises at home. I am doing it twice a week.
What i am saying is that Swimming is good for cardio but NOT to strength your legs. Even if you think it helps the reality is that it really doesn't put your legs to the test like running does.
If you want to build stronger legs then start running while mixing some home exercises. If you want more resistance then go to swim.

Bikes aren’t as effective since all your weight is supported by the bike and you don’t need to carry yourself. Like the pool. Running is the undisputed king of work.

Daltira Swimming helps you use all your limbs though. It's easier to lose more weight through swimming than running. Not saying that running is bad, but in terms of quick weight loss, swimming is the best. I guess it's all about preference though. Besides, I do both running and swimming.
