Oh the irony. Still, it made me think of something: Imagine if the Mechanicus had fallen the other way around during the Heresy. Imagine if the conservative mystics had sided with Horus, and the progressive innovators had joined ranks with Belisarius Cawl on the Emperor's side. Imagine how far they could have progressed. Imagine how much the Imperium could have accomplished.
The water is kinda muddied on this because on both sides there were conservatives and innovators. Plenty of innovating tech priests in the Imperium even in the 41st millenium tho they tend to do so in hiding or hold enough power to be safe from harm like Cawl Remember one of the big reason half of the mechanicus rebelled is because they felt that their traditions and beliefs had been destroyed by the Emperor, the « fake omnissiah »
@@KalashVodka175 The leader of the Mechanicum hated the Emperor since day 1 (he always viewed him as an usurper), he just waited for the right moment to rebel. Most traitors either hated Imperial rule (obviously) or were swayed by Horus' words about the Emperor intending to have human bureaucracy rule over the new Imperium (and from a superhuman's/transhuman's POV ,which the Mechanicum and the Space Marines belong to, it was insulting). The Chaos part came later due to warp exposure during the later period of the Horus Heresy or due to them fleeing to the Eye of Terror.
The other two comments made good points so I'll just add my own two cents. I don't know if it would of been best for humanity to advance in the way the Mechanicus would of wanted. Sure technologically we would of progressed, but to call the imperium in such a timeline "human" would be a stretch considering how much they religiously idolize turning people into machines.
Even had that happened, even if the Emperor won, and the mechanicum embraced science, and the cult of the god-emperor never been established, the Imperium would still be a monstrous and callous edifice of tyranny and blind hatred. No amount of technological progress can change that. The sad truth of the imperium is that it is founded upon an ideology of hate. It likes to claim to be ‘the hard man making hard decisions’, but most of the time, the problems they solve with brutality and callous disregard for the suffering of others are problems of their own making. The Imperium is a death-cult, obsessed with heroic death and struggle, and eagerly committing genocide on anything and everything that doesn’t meet their narrow criteria. Whether the follow the Imperial Truth or the Imperial Creed is mere window-dressing, because very little of their behavior changes from one to the other; the imperium of the 31st Millennium is just as fascist and evil as the imperium of the 42nd Millennium.

The greatest lie of the Imperial Truth is not that it denied the existence of the supernatural. The greatest lie of the Imperial Truth is that it denied itself to be a religion: From the Encyclopedia Britannica: "Religion, human beings’ relation to that which they regard as holy, sacred, absolute, spiritual, divine, or worthy of especial reverence." Worthy of special reverence. Citing Yuval Harari: “As far as we can tell from a purely scientific viewpoint, human life has absolutely no meaning. Humans are the outcome of blind evolutionary processes that operate without goal or purpose. Our actions are not part of some divine cosmic plan, and if planet earth were to blow up tomorrow morning, the universe would probably keep going about its business as usual. As far as we can tell at this point, human subjectivity would not be missed. Hence any meaning that people inscribe to their lives is just a delusion.” "Theist religions focus on the worship of gods. Humanist religions worship humanity, or more correctly, Homo sapiens. Humanism is a belief that Homo sapiens has a unique and sacred nature, which is fundamentally different from the nature of all other animals and of all other phenomena. Humanists believe that the unique nature of Homo sapiens is the most important thing in the world, and it determines the meaning of everything that happens in the universe. The supreme good is the good of Homo sapiens. The rest of the world and all other beings exist solely for the benefit of this species." Now, I have seen some humanist and free-thinker sites giving bitter battle to this enunciate, but the more one check it the more it rings, not just with real life but with the Imperial Truth, in fact, I dare say it fits to a T with the speech given by Sindermann: "As I said, I don't know whether Harari was ignorant or manipulative to the point of reversing these easily checked facts into their opposite. It is a fact, however, that it offered him some dramaturgical advantages to connect evolutionary humanism counterfactually with Hitler, and socialist humanism counterfactually with Stalin. Since without this twist, the story that Harari wanted to sell to his readers, the story of the approaching demise of humanism, would not have worked. Why? Because Harari, after discrediting evolutionary and socialist humanism, could disregard all the arguments that came from these traditions. Instead, what remained was "liberal humanism", which Harari (following his own logic, but actually grossly distorting) presented as an a) anti-egalitarian (directed against the "socialist-humanistic" ideal of equality) and b) naive-idealistic (against the "evolutionary-humanistic" principle of science) ideology." We can go on forever discussing the difference in ideologies and religions, but then it ultimately comes down to a battle of semantics, just as some evangelists declare themselves "they follow no religion but have a direct and deep relation with God through Christ" to the previous attempt to rebuke Harari, when all is said and done we only need to go to the dictionary to see why the Imperial Truth was a religion, of course it was, that's why the jump from Imperial Truth to Imperial Creed was so amusingly fast, the very act of having people believe at gunpoint something is deliciously ironical.
Pretty much all of this yeah. The Imperial Truth was just a secular religion with its real honest Goal was to kill the Gods of Chaos and any other God. But the problem is noted in the lore that this is not quite how Chaos works and that the Emperor was, inadvertently, creating a Chaos God of Irreligion/Atheism. Its name of course, we not revealed due to the way it was "worshiped" so yeah.
Seriously in the current Warhammer setting is the Imperial Truth still valid? The worship of entire TRILLIONS of humans has had an effect on the Emperor. Faith has practically become a power in Warhammer, channeled by the SOB, the Living Saints, and the Legion of the Damned. Proof that the Emperor is becoming something akin to a god. If Guilliman or some other guy, enforces the Imperial Truth, then Imperial Cult is abolished, the Eccleciarchy will lose power, confusion will reign over the Imperium. The religion that they believed in for 10000 years is gone. This might cause a civil war where the most fanatical will call the people responsible for this as heretics, dividing the Imperium making it open to attack. I say just let the Imperial Cult stay until all enemies of the Imperium are defeated or destroyed (based on the current setting thats probably not gonna happen anytime soon). At least with the Imperial Cult in place, it will give the people something to rally to, gives them hope. The Chaos Gods even fear that the Golden Throne is just keeping the Emperor's newfound power contained within his body. If the Emperor rises, one way or another, from the Golden Throne, He will do so not as a man, not as a god but as a power that existence has never seen before.

@@OfficioAudiorum Yes it was actually a really good use of a revelation all jokes aside, I find it quite pleasing that like how the Emperor, and many others started to realize, that they had to tolerate and use the faith as a weapon. Guys dont listen to this extremist!!! Religion is very cool and makes your head go funny if you believe enough! -sincerely, editor Erebus -this post was sponsored by the Dark Council

This is very moving. I'm gonna start a 30k terran born imperial heralds legion for horus heresy 2.0. I love this atheists zelots. If only we had something similar in 40k.
And then a book later he went to the Lecitio Divinatatus 😐
He did. Because Euphrati Keeler proved that against the forces of Chaos, reason isn't enough. When reason was torn to shreds by demons of insanity, Faith In the Emperor simply worked. In a way, they realized how Chaos works and used the Warp's methods against them. In my humble opinion of course.
@@OfficioAudiorum Yes it was actually a really good use of a revelation all jokes aside, I find it quite pleasing that like how the Emperor, and many others started to realize, that they had to tolerate and use the faith as a weapon. I can vaguely recall Sindermann talking about how to use it, and as though some coin it as manipulation (which it technically is), it's a brilliant use of pragmatic adaptability
Guys dont listen to this extremist!!! Religion is very cool and makes your head go funny if you believe enough!

I cannot fault you for having faith in me. But I can fault you for making A RELIGION OUT OF ME >:(
Sorry E, You don't choose godhood, goodhood chose You! Now stop complaining and get back to protecting us from evil xenos and heretics! :D
(Above is the Russian transcription of the speech)
