Aaaah, this again. YOU made me buy this a year ago (after seeing one of you're vids) and i LOVE it. Also was the reason to buy the G1on which i love to pieces, too.
Was it only a year ago that I did the last video about this one? Wow... It's a fun one alright, I wish Zoom would bring ALL of the effects it has ever produced together in one pedal. Each model seems to have a unique thing, like the crazy delay on the 708 which is not quite the same on the G1on. Oh well, maybe one day! Thanks for watching the channel, EB :) GF
Long time Zoom fanboy here , actually was just watching Rick Beato's interview where David Gilmour says he still relies on Zoom 9030s (from early 90s) for guitar processing. Pretty sure some of the classic NIN stuff used the same ones. I had a BFX-708 for a long time, and have also owned many of their more recent units, including G2/B2, G3/B3, G1on, and pretty much every Multistomp model multiple times. Not sure if it's nostalgia or the "Made in Japan" badge, but I still miss something in the newer ones that the 708 had. Lower fidelity maybe haha? Particularly one of the "Defret" settings, which I used quite a bit back in the day. The best "fake fretless" sounds I've ever gotten came from Zoom effects, they are better than Boss in this regard. Have been really tempted to pick a 708 up again, but I'm a bit worried that it won't live up to my memories!
I remember that fretless sim effect! It really made a nice throbbing sound, great under distortion even though that might not have been Zoom's intention. Thanks for commenting :)
I have this pedal effect, I was thinking to sell it. but not... after seeing this video, I will continue with this effect forevermore.......Thanks for the video....
I've had mine for years and for bass, it's all I've needed. Mostly use just a bit of compression and a bit of reverb with _mild_ PingPong echo. The Octaver works well. I also use the Synth at times, and the Fuzz or Vintage distortion. When playing guitar, it also works fine. Love the Tremolo too.
This raises a good point that I've realized myself recently. Sometimes multi effects can perform really well at just one task, it doesn't have to be a thick layer of effects. Lately I've realized that the noise reduction in the Zoom G2.1u is the best i've ever tried, so that's its main function now. Thanks for commenting Larry :) #gearfacts
I had one of the original Zoom Bass pedals, rarely used it at the show I was playing in. The trombone player wanted to try it, and he made some very interesting sounds. Trumpet player was nuts, and created some wild sounds, the 2 of them and Zoom made for some interesting, very cool parts.
I own/used the one after this, the BFX 708II, and while I loved it to bits, it's not very durable. Soon after buying it from Sam Ash, it developed a short in the input jack. They repaired it, but it's currently sitting unused because that happened AGAIN and it's not worth repairing a second time. I do like some of the sounds, though.
Yes I agree, the original was more robust and just generally a bit better I thought. The second version could take Smartmeda cards but this doesn't seem particularly useful to me. Both good pedals though :) GF
I firmly believe they all turn into glitch machines. I've owned 2 of these and 2 708II respectively and a 707 and none died outright. The death rattles can be unnerving though. They aren't durable have no lock on recorded samples BUT they do have determination.
Great sound effects and audio¡ One of my best machines that i haved¡¡ With guitar too¡ (Except Ods) fuzz and thrash banks goes well¡ This is from 1999-2000. Ahh Japan Japan¡
Interesting! I couldn t get a good fuzz drive from it but that can depend heavily on the kind of guitar you put into it. Clearly mine was a bad choice! GF
@@Eleni_Be I've only messed with one ages ago, but from my experience with other Zoom MFX and flicking pages of their manuals, I'd say a little Ring Modulation or Synth thrown in with some generous Reverb could help beef up the Fuzz on this one. Limiter and Amp Simulator plus EQ could be another way to pull the trick but I don't know how far they go on this particular unit...
@@gearfacts Last time I heard one of those in action it was through some small practice amp and novice players doing their best at Spinal Tap settings, I guess that helped a bit...
Thanks for this video! I just have one question, I’m adding this onto my pedalboard and I wanted to know if there was a way to turn off the effects so I can just get a clean sound?
@@starrlightmighty5789 You go into EDIT and then switch off each effect in the chain, leaving you with a patch that is doing nothing to your sound. So turn off the compression, the distortion, the modulation effects and so on, until the sound is completely clean.
I’m a little to this post, but all you have to do is simultaneously depress both pedals and immediately release. The effects are then bypassed. If you hold the pedals down a few seconds, the unit mutes the input.

i bought this pedal when it first came out... and now i feel old that the video is titled "vintage" amazing nostalgia
haha not to worry! I think I used the word 'vintage' a bit haphazardly in this title :)
@@gearfacts good vid tho brought back so many memories of me spending countless hours doing exactly what you were doin

That riffage on the F2 bender setting blew me away! Bravo
You've mastered the time setting as well. Sounds nice on guitar.
hmm I wonder what riffage that was ...I'll have to go back and have a look, must have accidentally got my fingers into a good position

Then only way to do it is to create an empty patch that you can switch to.

This was a great value box in its day. I still have mine. Sound engineers don't like it, it's too hissy.
Yeah it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't be game to take it into a studio today in 2021. They'd show me the door!
IMO there isn't many pedals worth taking into the studio. Most are too noisy. Good for home studio preproduction
